@TheSpencer77 It looks like the car was on the break too hard and the tires locked up. You can see the smoke coming from the tires before it lost control. As you may know, when your tires lock up you can't control your direction. It's like driving on ice. If you need to prove this, check if the car had ABS (anti-lock breaking system)

She could have braked a little, cut into the right lane (there was room if you look at the approach) and totally missed this. Classic panic stop. Watch the car in front of the black civic. It slows to stop for the light normally. Your almost-killer doesn't. When he wakes from the massive brain fart he is experiencing (or looks away from the old cell phone) and sees the shrinking distance to the brake lights in front of him he panics and attempts to do the impossible, Brake and Turn at the same time. A panicked driver and lack of ABS does the rest. no e-brake, just fear and brake mashing. glad you made it BTW.

you can see both front and rear tires lock up and produce smoke almost immediately after brake lights come on. They accelerated then hit brakes when noticed traffic was stopping. Prob hit brakes hard and even harder they noticed car pitching. Captain Hindsight says they should have released brakes and turned in to spin, corrected then applied brakes in a firm fashion but to much as to cause lockup,as then you lose steering. But, hard to tell what happened. good thing you were slowing down
The car experienced brake failure. It looks like the right rear brake just locked up sending the car into a spin. I would be interested to know if the left front brake also locked up? The RR and LF brakes would be on the same hydraulic system. I would also want to inspect the internals of the right rear brake! An E-Brake could cause this too. Some E-Brakes only use one side to brake, most two, but a misadjusted rear brake system could easily cause this too!
I saw something similar to this, though no motorcycle involved when a driver accidentally shifted into reverse while going forward. My family was heading home and saw the backup lights of the car in front of us come on. He swerved a few times and then spun into the guard rail.

IMHO the civic driver looked down either at his phone or dropped something and reached down to pick it up, when he looked up and thought he was too close to the car in front of him and then slam on his brakes. His badly maintained front brakes were probably worn unevenly from left to right side thereby the right caliper grabbed harder than the right causing the spin out. All that inexperienced driver had to do was release the brake as soon as he detect any skidding and pump his brake

But i think the brake imbalance is incorrect because the rear wheels locked up before the front did. OR unless he thought it was an emergency and pulled the E-Brake buut his brake lights came on...

Classic panic stop. Watch the car in front of the black civic. It slows to stop for the light normally. Your almost-killer doesn't. When he wakes from the massive brain fart he is experiencing (or looks away from the old cell phone) and sees the shrinking distance to the brake lights in front of him he panics and attempts to do the impossible, Brake and Turn at the same time. A panicked driver and lack of ABS does the rest. no e-brake, just fear and brake mashing. glad you made it BTW.

@nativebrother Perhaps they just had some rear brake work and had had the shoes adjusted too tight. After they got too hot from rubbing they would eventually lock up. Driver of the Honda might not even be the one to blame...

you can see both front and rear tires lock up and produce smoke almost immediately after brake lights come on. They accelerated then hit brakes when noticed traffic was stopping. Prob hit brakes hard and even harder they noticed car pitching. Captain Hindsight says they should have released brakes and turned in to spin, corrected then applied brakes in a firm fashion but to much as to cause lockup,as then you lose steering. But, hard to tell what happened. good thing you were slowing down

The car experienced brake failure. It looks like the right rear brake just locked up sending the car into a spin. I would be interested to know if the left front brake also locked up? The RR and LF brakes would be on the same hydraulic system. I would also want to inspect the internals of the right rear brake! An E-Brake could cause this too. Some E-Brakes only use one side to brake, most two, but a misadjusted rear brake system could easily cause this too!

I saw something similar to this, though no motorcycle involved when a driver accidentally shifted into reverse while going forward. My family was heading home and saw the backup lights of the car in front of us come on. He swerved a few times and then spun into the guard rail.

IMHO the civic driver looked down either at his phone or dropped something and reached down to pick it up, when he looked up and thought he was too close to the car in front of him and then slam on his brakes. His badly maintained front brakes were probably worn unevenly from left to right side thereby the right caliper grabbed harder than the right causing the spin out. All that inexperienced driver had to do was release the brake as soon as he detect any skidding and pump his brake

The person in the Honda Civic wasn't paying attention ahead when the car in-front slowed down so he slammed on the brakes causing the wheels to lock up. But i think the brake imbalance is incorrect because the rear wheels locked up before the front did. OR unless he thought it was an emergency and pulled the E-Brake buut his brake lights came on...

Looks to me like the driver in the car didn't realize the car in front had stopped and by the time they started braking it was too late so they tried pulling the e-brake which caused the car to spin out.
