How I hate it when people say "poor horses that was cruely" etc. Come back from heaven/hell in 500 years, who knows how riding will look like. And BTW, go and blame Dschingis Khan for the wood saddles, that would make much more sense. :)
the russian program for breeding warmbloods wanted to include about 30% akhal teke blood and because of the use of trakehner, swedish warmblood and other blood lines the russian horses often had a special 'look' to them with a leggier build. this does not mean they are 100% akhal teke.
actually these are part akhal teke and carry different bloodlines mixed together. some may oooh and ahhh over the newspaper hitting the horse's legs, this is not so correct work. the canter is very restricted by todays standards and the piaffe is kicking out behind and uneven behind, with hind legs coming down wide behind and irregular. it is not so great. and this was the most abusive rider in the history of russian dressage - read elena petrushkova's autobiography if you do not believe me.
Wahnsinn die heutigen Pferde würden ausrasten mit dem papier und so locker mit genick höchstem Punkt, wahnsinn das gibts heute gar nicht mehr *schade* !!!!!!
This is the first time I've seen Absent at work. Good God it's amazing! The grace and composure... And that paper flying didn't even make him twitch! WOW!:)))
Russian warmblood are the best. Look at the paper passing through his legs !!!! Any horse i know would have lost his composure if this happened.... WOW ! Merci d'avoir trouvé ça.
There is footage somewhere else, very difficult to find, of Absent performing passage as well and that too was amazing. I guess he wasn't asked to do it here. It's only 30 seconds long!
Dressage is training, therefore any form of riding, any saddle use, if trained well must teach the horse the strengh to collect which in and of itself is dressage.
Man, we don't see piaffes like that anymore! Plus, did you notice the paper blowing by his legs in the last piaffe? A lot of modern competition horses probably would have freaked out about that, but Absent just tunes it out and listens to his rider. That's what dressage is about :)
" agree with you, a lot of modern competition horses probably WOULD have freaked out and that IS what dressage"
Then they have not been properly trained. If a horses only purpose is to controlled in a controlled circumstance, then what good is it? It is simply a competition machine

Absent was an akhal teke. I'm amazed he didn't mind the paper passing through his legs! Very good horse.

No wonder he was world champion. Many horses swish their tails in defience when performing piaffe. Hes totally relaxed, so nice to see.

@dressageReine: that`s what "really good riding" is about - a well trained horse, that trusts in his rider, no matter which saddle is used ;-)

What caught my eye was the beautiful uplift, like at every step, Absent would rise up off the ground and take flight.
What caught my breath was the blowing paper, that for Absent, did not exist.
I agree with you, a lot of modern competition horses probably WOULD have freaked out and that IS what dressage

I think that is the point that I was making.
No one wants to send the time making sure a horse is properly trained, teaching it how to get behind itself, and hold itself.
You would not believe how many so called top horses I have seen spook, start and shy at things while competing they are not supposed..
If they were properly trained.
