The drummer looks like he should be playing for Fleetwood Mac or ELO, he was out of touch at that time and he's probably still out of touch to this day.
@wovokanarchy The drummer is Buzz Bidstrup and is a drumming legend in Australia. The man is an awesome drummer, listen to their stuff when he played - fkn amazing!! So was Brent Eccles btw!
I was 13, my 1st high school disco, they played disco all night till the last song,,, then they play this... the hall litterally bounced in unisen... n then we had to go home... are u kidding me!!!... how can anyone want to go home after hearing this,,, 1978... a great year. I then saw the angels at the concert of the decade on the steps of the opera house 1979... I was privlaged to see all the best aussie bands in a 12 hr rock festival... musically spoilt rotten n never looked back!
@cass3765 they always get the crowd rocking - I have seen them more times than I can remember, but at the Newcastle earthquake concert where there was a pretty good line up - the were the only band that when they came on the place went berserk - it was awesome and it just proved that these guys are legends.
@cass3765 I was 12 in '78 and had just started high school in Adelaide and the Angels, local boys bless 'em, played a lunch gig in the gym. Best 20 cents I ever spent.
Bring back the show Countdown. The Australian music industry needs another show like Countdown. If it wasn`t for Countdown we may never have got to see or hear AC/DC, Angels, Rose Tattoo, INXS.. etc..
@ManFromMelbourne yeah, countdown was instrumental... but today's bands aren't writing those good solid songs like they used to. The Living End and Jet may have the chops, but they're not writing material as straight-out as this. If The Angels recorded 'White Noise' or 'She's A Genius' around this period you think it would even be released? The songs were better - commercial or not.
wow.. how young are the boys.. i saw them at narara in the early 80's and they went off.. doc scaled the side of the stage, jumped and precisely hit the stage as this song started.. absolute showman and professional.. can't wait to see them at panthers in penrith in december.. aussie rock rules..
@drizanuns HAHA! yeah just spent some time wit him on the weekend he waz tellin' me how he waz pretty athletic in his younger days jumpin off speakers and the like. He was about the forth fastest in South Aust. untrained!! follow him on twitter @docneeson
Great to hear/see this. I only knew this song through the late great Mick Ronson's swan song album: "Heaven and Hull" He made this album when he had terminal liver cancer, and it's a goodie. 'Love both versions of this song.
@nzoz1978 - thanks! Also, I think Ian Hunter and Joe Elliott are singing back up. (Joe's from Mick's home town of 'ull, UK and did a ton of work to get the album out.) If you want to have your socks blown off, Youtube has Bowie and Mick doing "Like a Rolling Stone" - an incredible, rocking version. I cannot say enough about this album. It's terrific. Mick thought he'd see it released, but sadly died before that. Cheers from Toronto
I LOVE THIS SONG!...............want to know some juicy gossip from their '76 tasmanian tour that they dare not print anywhere......go to "inxs to look at you pigmygoatzdotcom" and read my 3 comments. regards.
Aussies have the best of just about everything. Killer Music,, Killer Rugby,,, Killer beer. What else could a person ask for. Wish they would come tour the US again, saw them in the early 80's in Seattle. Brilliant.
You forgot a few.............Rose Tatts, Hoodoo's, Easy Beats, Spy v Spy, Sunnyboys.............Pops, INXS, Oils (remember Species ...weren't popular back then) the list goes on.
Had almost forgot about these guys. It's a shame that so much good stuff from down under never really made it to So Cal back in the day. I was lucky enough to have a friend who worked at Zed Records in Long Beach and turned me on to some great stuff. Makes me wish I had moved to Australia when I had the chance back in "78
angels , then rose tattoo .............and a l o n g last ..... ac- dc , in terms of lyrical superiority -musically though , they were all strong , equal i would say -though i do like the brewster brothers harmony leads . .
Aussies have the best of everything. We get to listen to the best the world has to offer and we also get to hear our own stuff. The US would go silly over this stuff but most will never get to hear it.
saw these guys at sweetwaters , forget the year , up the front, some dick head threw something at Rick Brewster, he never missed a beat, never forget it as long as i live , legendary, thats all i can say.
@jrwoodsy hahah, no no way, Pete Garret is as Authentic as u can get.. maybe some influences from many aussie bands, of course, but he's too raw to copy, I mean the way they move is just too full on to stop to think of any type of imitiation! LOVE and PEACE to u dear friend.
Farout, Aussie Frontmen are soooo Powerful, full on passionates... The good old aussie attitude do as u feel, be who you are, regardless of the Music Industry's MAchine, which wants to chew you up and spit u out into another form, those who resist this and continue true to themselves have made it, no need to receive awards or recognition or to conquer the Western World, the fans are the ones to judge and enjoy... Long Live Good Aussie Music!! Bless u all
British music (aside from punk) was heading quickly into dire waters around the time Australian music was peaking... yep, the Brits still chose to buy Dead End Kids records over Angels albums...
@WebtronOnlineAuction Yeah, I grew up in Portland and KGON used to play the shit out of Angel City back in the day. They still throw Marseilles on once in a while...I have all of their CD's.
@jakedaniels7546 Im sorry, are you planning to infuriate a nation with your misguided "motherland" comments??? (even if my response is 9 months late) you do realise that The Angels were an Australian band do you not????
I saw this band in 1981 at a bar called Dooley's in Tempe Arizona. I was 15 and my best friend went with me. Back then, they didn't even care if drinks were served. This band was so loud, my hearing was messed up for several days. As we walked across the street, after the show and went into Dairy Queen, we couldn't even hear the lady at the counter. Crazy stuff and killer album!
I saw these guys in 1981 in Colubus, Ohio. It was my senior year in high school and these guys rocked! They really had many great songs and I used to listen to them LOUD in my 68 Firebird convertible. What a fantastic band! Aussie Rock rules!
In my opinion the angels, ac/dc and cold chisel are head and shoulders abovanything else australia has produced. I like INXS the mentals, midnight oil, powderfinger and silverchair but not in the same league
It is a mystery why these guys never made it big . They had more class ,originality and creativity than ACDC ever did . The only thing ACDC did was Its a long way to the top .
I grew up with the Angels from the 70's and they gave us working class kids from Elizabeth SA something special..playing in workers clubs and local pubs..it was a form of social expression through their lyrics...you cant dispute their legend status...everything goes Platinum and they are still rocking..their record is unmatched in Aus...compared to the trash music today...it is little wonder the 70's & 80's are being rediscovered by new generations
LUV that classic awesome guitar riff intro everytime! Rick is a legend!
These guys are in touring here, Adelaide, doing a HUGE weekend of events! Welcomed back home by our city's Lord Mayor, then an unforgettable spectacular symphony-backed concert perfectly named, "Symphony of Angels"....Adelaide will now be known as ANGEL CITY!
Doc is a honey!!! Grew up loving The Angels. Watched them a couple times live, they are fantastic. My fiancee's old school friend manages the band. Very exciting for me, and hoping they will tour around my area again.
its great to hear that you guys are into Aussie rock. my brothers and I grew up listening to theses bands, rose tattoo, the oils etc. Like most kids in Oz during the eighties i suppose! well done fellas, my brother now lives in Manhatten... NYC, what an awesome place , but thats another story. keep rockin'
Angel City will always be one of those obscure bands I listened to and followed back in the late 70's and that hardly anyone knew or heard of in mainstream U.S.A.
Never once heard them on radio...which is a good thing. Overly commercial rock music, back then and now, is, well....not to my liking.
I was at the 81 show...drank waaay too much and Puked in the Park blocks before they took the stage...only chance I ever got to see them...and I blew it.What a waste of $2.92
my sister brought a cd back from aus.years ago as a present for me.Hadnt heard of them before. That album changed that.Liveline and the angels are now amongst my fave band and albums.
They supported Meat Loaf on a national Australian tour when this clip was broadcast on Countdown in 1978. They still tour today with the lineup featured on this clip, worth checking out if they come to a town near you!
What I recommend doing, as I just did - is get really pist n stoned and replay on loop the bit from 1:55 to 2:35 and just absorb the waves - you will transcend physical existence.
@ManFromMelbourne ...I respect what your saying but sorry... i too like stuff like "the angles", "Dragon" etc... it's what i grew up with in the house as a young kid,... i love it, even Hunters and collectors... but i don't see how you can compare Blink 182 to Rose tattoo or any other band from your generation. I guess it's the same as how your parents more than likely thought rock'n'roll was a waste of time aswell...
the ANGELS ANTHEM.. pure classic aussie rock.. along side ac/dc, cold chisel, rose tattoo, radiators and midnight-oil.. pure class.. no other band comes close to these elite musicians..
I am confused. Does anyone know why this band did not have more fame. Is is cuz of cocaine? I love em and they were very a tight band. Did ACDC shut em down?
the us version of rolling stone did a spread on the guys during there US tour and called them the rolling stones of the 80's at that time they where very popular in seattle and through the NW US and canada
man the angels can kick some serious ass with their sound.
ive seen them live quite a few times but the most memorable was the myer music bowl with ac/dc in 1980. it was pure magic. the angels were sooooo good. we were all peaking. then ac/dc delivered with the back in black album. gotta say the angels come close, real close, to upstaging the worlds biggest rock band.
Hey great memories from seeing them live back in 1980 at a Darwin concert at the botanical gardens. Didn't Doc Neeson hurt himself jumping off a big amp at that one? Every time i hear Fashion and Fame I want to jump like crazy too. This song rocks too.
Now where was I before I hit that post comment button, oh yes, no helmets, no rego, no license, no worries........the'd probably hang you for that these days........
1978, 15 year old motorcycle mad teenagers, we'd listen to the angels until we got into frenzy, jump on our bikes and disappear into the sunset, no helmets, no rego, no license
The GREATEST AUSSIE band ever. The Greatest frontman of all bands. we were never bored at their concerts. Doc knew how to keep the crowd alive on their feet. ANGELS..FOREVER.
if u are an Aussie,in 1976 the Angels RULED! Victoria Park next to Sydney Uni. IDIOTS THREW FULL CANS OF BEER! u DID NOT waste beer It was against MY religion!! Doc and the boys did not cancel their performance. they just played HARDER!!! One of the best gigs i have ever seen was Xmas eve 29 years ago. Screamin Jets, another PREMIER act Supporting the Angels at St George Leagues club in Sydney. What a fantastic gig. Heaps of oncores.
Sounds ridiculous but I know what you mean - me too - though it was more that tone on Rick's lead breaks.
These guys were THE kings of Aussie Rock - how they didn't crack it BIG BIG BIG,(and I mean Led Zeppelin or AeroSmith BIG!) in the World is just another of life's injustices - they shit on ALL other Aussie bands, EVER!
Brain, how much knowledge of Australian music do you have? I mean, if you have an extensive knowledge and still stand by the statement that The Angels shit on all other Aussie bands; than that is fine.
However, if you're just making that statement on the basis of only a few bands you heard (be it AC/DC, Men At Work, INXS, LRB, etc) than you have no merit to make that statement.
Radio Birdman, Rose Tattoo, Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs, The Saints, Beasts of Bourbon abd Midnight Oil weren't lame
They certainly weren't lame and there are plenty more excellent Aussie bands from that era.
But The Angels were in a leaugue of their own.
The highest quality and most prolific - they had at least 20 BRILLIANT songs (ie. "classic" standard) - most bands are lucky to scrape up half a dozen.
Yes, that's true. In fact, as time goes on, their music just seems to be getting better! I like this group a whole lot more now than I did ten years ago. It's pretty shit that they didn't make it in the biggest league of Rock 'n' Roll. The Kinks kicked them off as a support act coz they were winning over their audience and hmmm... England doesn't like anything good coming out of Australia (they only accept our garbage), because it gives them less reason to feel superior.
Midnight Oil are an amazing live band, too bad most people around here (North America) only think of them as the dudes who play Beds are Burning....and Rose Tattoo are really cool too.
"Angel City" played Winnipeg Manitoba Canada on Sunday March 24 1985 at the Centennial Concert Hall, I know 'cause I was there, I still have my ticket stub. the show kicked ass in comparison to bigass arena hard rock shows that were very popular at the time. I saw Triumph 6 days later and was really bored haha :)
I'm from near Winnipeg, Canada but I remember that they were fairly popular in this area back then. Still hear the odd song on the radio. Hope they come this way if it's true they reunited. Devil's Gate and this song were my favorites.
They did get back together and toured, my friend was the guitarist for them. BUT Doc is an alcoholic and had a bit of an ego and their record company asked for some proof of success and doc couldn't get any so my friend left as the guitarist and it sort of came to a grinding halt.
Hope that helps you out.
PS, why they werent huge back in their prime I have no idea, this song is excellent
Agreed great song, guitar tone and an injustice they never got as big as AC/DC outside Australia. It would be interesting if they regrouped and visited the states again would they get numbers? LRB apprently still play to huge crowds in the states and they were crap.
hi there. sadly, i do not have the Shadow Boxer clip nor Countdown appearance. I heard that they did make a video for 'Shadow Boxer' but I have never seen it and it's never appeared on that dvd that they released.
They were just the best - that tone on the rhythm and those lead lines, and overlaid with those evocals -unbefuckinlievable - ACDC only dreamed of being this good - why THE ANGELS weren't so huge is one of the great mysreries of the art of rock n roll. They were the perfect rock band. So many great songs. And that's all it's about, in the end.

Ahhh, the disco era. 'cept our disco's played Angles, Chisel and AC/DC instead of Beegees and the other guy with a high voice. I liked our discos!

Love the physical dynamic of The Angels live. The rest of the band's totally into it. Meanwhile, the lead guitar player is statue still!
Really effective. Great track!

Weak? You wish you could play/perform half as good as them you asswipe!!

The music of today is not half as good as this. All this blink 182, coldplay is nothing compared to the angels, rose tattoo and of course AC/DC
ManFromMelbourne 2 years ago 17
@ManFromMelbourne ...I respect what your saying but sorry... i too like stuff like "the angles", "Dragon" etc... it's what i grew up with in the house as a young kid,... i love it, even Hunters and collectors... but i don't see how you can compare Blink 182 to Rose tattoo or any other band from your generation. I guess it's the same as how your parents more than likely thought rock'n'roll was a waste of time aswell...

Had I known the drummer was some disco reject dude from Saturday Night Fever I wouldn't have bothered to listen to them in the early 80s

I am confused. Does anyone know why this band did not have more fame. Is is cuz of cocaine? I love em and they were very a tight band. Did ACDC shut em down?
unnim 2 years ago
I can't understand it either. Great back catalog, great singer and guitar sound and hot live. If Green Day covered this song now it would be huge.

Probably be a good cover too.

Well if you have to get shut down you couldnt pick a better band to do it than AC/DC. Im going to see them in Febuary.

man the angels can kick some serious ass with their sound.
ive seen them live quite a few times but the most memorable was the myer music bowl with ac/dc in 1980. it was pure magic. the angels were sooooo good. we were all peaking. then ac/dc delivered with the back in black album. gotta say the angels come close, real close, to upstaging the worlds biggest rock band.
freakin awesome

This song wasnt preformed live Molly never let bands perform live that is why Midnight Oil refused to go on Countdown
eyewrenchee 3 years ago
Hey great memories from seeing them live back in 1980 at a Darwin concert at the botanical gardens. Didn't Doc Neeson hurt himself jumping off a big amp at that one? Every time i hear Fashion and Fame I want to jump like crazy too. This song rocks too.

Genius. The chord at 00:42 changed my life back in '84.
minwav 3 years ago 2
"A chord changed your life"
Sounds ridiculous but I know what you mean - me too - though it was more that tone on Rick's lead breaks.
These guys were THE kings of Aussie Rock - how they didn't crack it BIG BIG BIG,(and I mean Led Zeppelin or AeroSmith BIG!) in the World is just another of life's injustices - they shit on ALL other Aussie bands, EVER!
Brainman94 3 years ago 3
Brain, how much knowledge of Australian music do you have? I mean, if you have an extensive knowledge and still stand by the statement that The Angels shit on all other Aussie bands; than that is fine.
However, if you're just making that statement on the basis of only a few bands you heard (be it AC/DC, Men At Work, INXS, LRB, etc) than you have no merit to make that statement.
Radio Birdman, Rose Tattoo, Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs, The Saints, Beasts of Bourbon abd Midnight Oil weren't lame
nzoz1978 3 years ago
They certainly weren't lame and there are plenty more excellent Aussie bands from that era.
But The Angels were in a leaugue of their own.
The highest quality and most prolific - they had at least 20 BRILLIANT songs (ie. "classic" standard) - most bands are lucky to scrape up half a dozen.
Brainman94 3 years ago 3
Yes, that's true. In fact, as time goes on, their music just seems to be getting better! I like this group a whole lot more now than I did ten years ago. It's pretty shit that they didn't make it in the biggest league of Rock 'n' Roll. The Kinks kicked them off as a support act coz they were winning over their audience and hmmm... England doesn't like anything good coming out of Australia (they only accept our garbage), because it gives them less reason to feel superior.
nzoz1978 3 years ago
Midnight Oil are an amazing live band, too bad most people around here (North America) only think of them as the dudes who play Beds are Burning....and Rose Tattoo are really cool too.
"Angel City" played Winnipeg Manitoba Canada on Sunday March 24 1985 at the Centennial Concert Hall, I know 'cause I was there, I still have my ticket stub. the show kicked ass in comparison to bigass arena hard rock shows that were very popular at the time. I saw Triumph 6 days later and was really bored haha :)
kennypeeandpoo 2 years ago
Hey scoochie2006 ... this band was marketed as Angel City here in North America. Either way, an awesome band full of kick ass tunes.
Cheers, Frazzo.
Frazzo 3 years ago 3
I'm from near Winnipeg, Canada but I remember that they were fairly popular in this area back then. Still hear the odd song on the radio. Hope they come this way if it's true they reunited. Devil's Gate and this song were my favorites.
scoochie2006 3 years ago 2
It was in todays Herald Sun-Great News.
It's offical The Angels are reforming with Doc taking the mic. National tour starting June through to August. Will be massive no doubt.
webtronasia 3 years ago
Hey
They did get back together and toured, my friend was the guitarist for them. BUT Doc is an alcoholic and had a bit of an ego and their record company asked for some proof of success and doc couldn't get any so my friend left as the guitarist and it sort of came to a grinding halt.
Hope that helps you out.
PS, why they werent huge back in their prime I have no idea, this song is excellent
ede09 3 years ago
Agreed great song, guitar tone and an injustice they never got as big as AC/DC outside Australia. It would be interesting if they regrouped and visited the states again would they get numbers? LRB apprently still play to huge crowds in the states and they were crap.
NZOZ do you have Shadow Boxer from Countdown?
I have Mr Damage from countdown with pyro.
webtronasia 3 years ago 2
hi there. sadly, i do not have the Shadow Boxer clip nor Countdown appearance. I heard that they did make a video for 'Shadow Boxer' but I have never seen it and it's never appeared on that dvd that they released.
nzoz1978 3 years ago
I have seen the shadow boxer clip , very poor one camera and dark.
However the have seen a snipet of Shadow Boxer from Countdown and it was excellent.
You need to track it down. Also a video exists of a live TV/FM dual cast from a show called Nightmoves 1981, very rare, do not have.
webtronasia 3 years ago
Now I'm curious about the 'Shadow Boxer' clip!!!!
nzoz1978 3 years ago
They were just the best - that tone on the rhythm and those lead lines, and overlaid with those evocals -unbefuckinlievable - ACDC only dreamed of being this good - why THE ANGELS weren't so huge is one of the great mysreries of the art of rock n roll. They were the perfect rock band. So many great songs. And that's all it's about, in the end.
