@PHXsuns13n8f1s I disagree. I believe orangutans adapt very well to zoo habitats. I also believe a zoo environment is actually better for them because it allows them to be social animals instead of being solitary as they would be in the wild. When Tua has one of her temper tantrums, it is usually because she thinks the keepers are taking too long to prepare treats. But, overall, she seems to be a very content orangutan, and a very proud and good mother for Batu.
@jessmjfan989 I like your script to go with the scene. But I disagree that they are mad because they are locked up in cages all day. Their exhibit is spacious, and they also go outside in spring, summer, and early fall. Tua has occasional tantrums, but not for the reason you are thinking. Sometimes, she gets annoyed when the gibbons call, or something like that. It could even be that the keepers were a minute or so late bringing her treats. But at least 90% of the time, she is fine.
@KristaOrangutan In this video, you can only see the area near the glass where the keepers can reach through the mesh and scratch the orangutans' backs or give them treats.
The whole rest of the inside viewing area is enclosed with glass. There is also a large outdoor area with grass and trees, and the "downstairs" area for the orangutans to have privacy if they want it.
They are never forced to come upstairs if they don't want to.
@ahonestwoman Tua really is beautiful. And it looks like Batu is going to grow up to be just as beautiful.
I just uploaded a video recorded last week showing Batu climbing and moving a few feet away from Tua. Last week was the first that Tua allowed Batu to move away from her.
pshh dam just like a human! its a stressed out mom and the man wanted to give her some treats to try n make her happy but shes jus on her period and smacked him away. amazing how much like humans they are yet we still think we can keep em locked up.
Also, I have to say that I was a bit confused when I started to watch your videos about the orangutans and gibbons, because I was just looking up siamangs and gibbons to hear the way their call sounded ( at first I looked up howler monkeys, but it didn't make the sound I was looking for ). After I stopped looking at the results, I looked at some other zoo videos and got to your page after clicking on one of your comments on one of them. At first I thought your video was a search result, haha!
The poor dear. She seems really stressed out. I agree, it seems that the gibbon's calling may have been the cause, perhaps along with other factors as well ( especially considering the fact that the male didn't seem as bothered? ).
How close are the gibbons to the orangutans? I know they have a very loud call and can be heard from far away, but I'm sure being close to them could intensify the sound, which may be why it bothered her so much. Or perhaps it was what they were 'saying'.
orangutans need real jungles to live in. not steel jungles

Does this mother orangutan have an area that is not a wire cage? Does her enclosure have some live vegetation and privacy?

Post-partum depression?

That's what a lot of people seem to be thinking. But I think it was just her reaction to the gibbon's calling.
She may have understood whatever they were trying to communicate. Or she may have wanted them to be quiet so Batu could take a nap.
She seemed fine yesterday. Sugi, Batu, and she were all together taking a nap.
