While all unions are detrimental to the economy and production, "public" sector government employee unions are particularly bad. When unionized employees are looking at bargaining with private companies, they know that if they press it too far, the company exceeds the money available and they lose their jobs. This limiting factor doesn't happen with Gov Employee unions. The "Government's" money (out of OUR pockets) is treated as limitless.

Im a firefighter/paramedic. A bad day at the office means someone lost a home or a loved one. It doesn't mean i messed up an order, or couldnt close a deal with another firm. Try telling a mother her 2 year old daughter is no longer with her. I am not included in this bill currently. I oppose it knowing that we will be next. But where will the cuts stop from there. This will fix a fraction of the fiscal problem. Private sector.... your next.
The other kicker to the overtime caper is the fact that the elected government official decides not to hire open positions. They save money buy paying out overtime instead of paying salaries and benefits. Then they slam the public workers by saying how much they make. This is a direct impact on trying to save the city money. Lets force a certain city department to obtain overtime; then call them overpaid. Lets face it.... this is a bad situation regardless what side you stand on.

The bus driver made over twice his salary all in overtime. They have a clause were the most senior employee has dibs on the overtime first. He chose to work 7 days a week throughout the summer. Im sure if you were giving this opportuninty that it wouldnt very well appeal to you. This person can't very well be catagorized with any other situation that we are talking about. As a worker in the private sector, I believe that public sector employees should have to contribute to their health/dental insurance and "Cadillac" pension plan like I do and there is no place for collective bargaining in public employment. An example: the Madison bus driver who made $150k thanks to collective bargaining. It's simply not fair

How do you think he made that much? Collective bargaining. Corporations create BAD jobs, look at the good jobs and businesses that were displaced by the box stores. Whenever you have top heavy corporations they look at the bottom line and end up doing things in the best interest of investors ie: sending jobs overseas in manufacturing and service, outsourcing and busting labor.

Hitler didn't simply abolish unions, he banned all unions except for the National Socialist Union of Employers and Workers, which he mandated by law that EVERYONE join. The stated aims of that union sound exactly like what you hear from SEIU and AFL-CIO, with the added bonus that since employers were required to join the union, and thus subordinate to union leadership, they had no real bargaining rights.

While all unions are detrimental to the economy and production, "public" sector government employee unions are particularly bad. When unionized employees are looking at bargaining with private companies, they know that if they press it too far, the company exceeds the money available and they lose their jobs. This limiting factor doesn't happen with Gov Employee unions. The "Government's" money (out of OUR pockets) is treated as limitless.

Im a firefighter/paramedic. A bad day at the office means someone lost a home or a loved one. It doesn't mean i messed up an order, or couldnt close a deal with another firm. Try telling a mother her 2 year old daughter is no longer with her. I am not included in this bill currently. I oppose it knowing that we will be next. But where will the cuts stop from there. This will fix a fraction of the fiscal problem. Private sector.... your next.

The other kicker to the overtime caper is the fact that the elected government official decides not to hire open positions. They save money buy paying out overtime instead of paying salaries and benefits. Then they slam the public workers by saying how much they make. This is a direct impact on trying to save the city money. Lets force a certain city department to obtain overtime; then call them overpaid. Lets face it.... this is a bad situation regardless what side you stand on.

The bus driver made over twice his salary all in overtime. They have a clause were the most senior employee has dibs on the overtime first. He chose to work 7 days a week throughout the summer. Im sure if you were giving this opportuninty that it wouldnt very well appeal to you. This person can't very well be catagorized with any other situation that we are talking about. But if this is your only argument i suppose you have to dwell on it.

To some people on here..you probably think I'm a heartless SOB for writing this, but I have no sympathy whatsoever for the protesters in Madison. As a worker in the private sector, I believe that public sector employees should have to contribute to their health/dental insurance and "Cadillac" pension plan like I do and there is no place for collective bargaining in public employment. An example: the Madison bus driver who made $150k thanks to collective bargaining. It's simply not fair

When the private sector was stuffing there pockets with fat bonuses and quick cash, the public workers had the foresight to look long term. @brandenburg75 ~ that's what missing from this argument. the public sector does many things you couldn't afford if it becomes private. schools, fire departments, highways, and police were all private at one time and it was utter chaos. only the well off could afford them. that's why we have these public sectors to begin with. 50 million people can't afford health care, can you afford a $50,000 college education? you will not be able to afford anything if it all becomes privatized!

@119schueler I don't agree with you on that..In 2009, the highest paid city employee in Madison was a bus driver who made $159,258. He made more than the mayor/boss. How do you think he made that much? Collective bargaining. By keeping collective bargaining, it's impossible for local governments to balance their budgets because teachers and other public employees will demand a raise every year. I think collective bargaining gives the public sector an "unfair" advantage over the private sec
