IMO, the left-right paradigm is a false construct. For example, I'm a Left-Libertarian (Geoist). But that doesn't mean I support big govt, the welfare state, the Frankfurt School or Che Guevara. Quite the contrary.

It's not a false construct, the left represents collectivism, the right represents individualism. However, the left hijacked the right via neoconservatism to give the impression that individualism is failing. You can't be on the left and still be a libertarian. You can, however, adopt the platform of some ideas on the left while also embracing libertarianism on the right.

I associate right with authoritarianism and left with anarchism. If right were to represent libertarianism and individualism, then how could monarchism, fascism and militarism also occupy the right?

Libertarianism and collectivism can both occupy space on the left, predicated upon the latter being voluntary. But I'll concede that your definition is more widely accepted (in the US).
