@redbluemast no it was 100% real vince was afraid, in my opinion that bret hart would bring the wwf tile with him to nitro and deface it, just like medusa. vince rigged the match after aggreeing to letting bret to win, but then during the match, vince made earl hebner ring the bell, leading to shawn winning. which is why they call it the montreal screwjob
OK, here's a question: Why did Shawn's music start right after the bell? How did the music guy have it queued up? Wasn't this supposed to be a top secret plan?
@tna19931 Did you read HBK's book? He admits to being in on it. But you're right... HBK has done a lot for the WWE and it's been long enough; the hate shoulda stopped like 5 years ago.
@kakashi76767 Oh please...the whole screwjob angle was a work. They did two things: 1. Give Brett Heart a going away present in huge sales for 'Wrestling With Shadows' (which is where this came from) 2. Help launch the attitude era which eventually saved the WWF.
Vince McMahon isn't so stupid that he would risk a murder rap to intentionally job Owen Hart.
@LiquidWarriorWWE like 95% of the wwe is stagged and the other 5% is real injurys. But this is real, it wasnt planned. It is indeed confirmed to be real, there is a biography about it.
Bret had it coming. You're gonna jump promotions and screw THEM over and you expect them to let you call the shots? He broke an unwritten wrestling rule and paid for it. Fuck Bret Hart.

@tomm9091 Shawn Michaels won the match by putting Bret Hart in the sharpshooter. However, Bret never tapped out. It was all a secret plan between Vince McMahon and other people to double cross Bret.

So he was going to wcw and expected to be send of as the champ?!?!? Vince should have told him " look you got lose the belt" cause it is pretty chicken shit to do this but he had to lose
@srgroids1 Brett said that prior to this he went up to shawn and told him he didn't mind losing the belt to shawn and putting him over. Shawn said that he wouldn't do the same for bret. So that, along with all the other issues between the 2 led to that.
I don't know...I still have my thoughts that this Montreal "screwjob" was the biggest work in wrestling history.
Think about it: Vince wouldn't allow himself to look like a sucker like that. He could've held up the release of that film for years. It was WWE footage they had to have a piece of that production.
Furthermore, the camera's follow Brett around for a year, but all of a sudden they can't be in the locker room when the "supposed" punch was thrown?
@Mite0m, plus why would vince just hang around close to the ring right after it happened. Watch the video at 7:34 and it looks like he's just waiting for Brett to spit on him. He knew Brett would be pissed so why just stand there and take a chance on getting his ass kicked in front of everyone ? It would seem more logical if Brett had got out of the ring and confronted him instead of spitting on him and staying in the ring until Vince left.
@ReALiTeeChEkk You'd think that the amount of times people are watching the matches on monitors backstage, that Vince would be nowhere near ringside......good point!
@XxAussieFuryxX , Yeah i thought that was odd. Alot of things about it seem suspicious to me. I'm not sayng it was or wasnt legit but i will always question whether it was or not.
@XxAussieFuryxX Well Vince is the one that wanted to take the title off Bret. Sure, Shawn would have to play a part but he wasn't the one responsible for it. Because of the history between Bret and Shawn, the Hitman would've automatically thought that HBK had screwed him over and would start taking it out on him. Vince (knowing that he himself was responsible) went to ringside to try and take some of the heat off Shawn. Anyway, that's what I believe happened...
Vince didn't want it to happen twice. Alundra Blayze left the companywith the women's championship and burned it, and threw it in the trash on WCW. Bret Screwed Bret, honestly. Why would Bret wanna leave!? Its the WWE!
@markis8437 2 things, bret didn't like the direction the company was going, the whole attitude area. and second, bret left for wcw because wwf could no longer afford bret hart. bret could have least negotiate a contract where he could of payed less money. So Idk.
Bret Screwed Bret, Seriously he was leaving the company, McMahon, one of the most succsessful men ever would not let a man leave his company a champion, I loved Bret Hart he goes down as one of my favourites, but BRET SCREWED BRET!
Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart Matches Against Each Other: 1990: Disqualification of both men so the match was thrown out, 7/21/1992 Ladder Match: Bret Hart wins, Survivor Series 1992: Bret Hart wins, 1/12/1994: Shawn Michaels wins by disqualification, WrestleMania XII: Shawn Michaels wins, Survivor Series 1997: Montreal Screwjob. I don't consider that a victory for anyone. Records Shawn Michaels: 2-2, Bret Hart: 2-2 We will never know who the better man is because of the Montreal Screwjob.
The one thing that has always puzzled me is the fact that belts are just props so why do the wrestlers carry them about with them? Shouldn't the back stage crew be responsible for the belt and just hand it to the wrestler prior to the show and then take it back for safe keeping? Might have been able to avoid all this if he had to hand it back at the end of the night. I remember in 08 they came to NZ and I was surprised that CM Punk had the money in the bank briefcase on him at the airport.
it was a tittle match between Bret and Shawn Micheals. Bret was supposed to win, but at the last second vince switched it and made it so Micheals would win. So when Micheals put Bret in a shark shooter, the ref ordered the bell to be rung almost instantly crowning Micheals the new Champion despite Bret never even tapping out.
@ScrewLimbBizkit Actually, Shawn was originally supposed to win the match against Bret, but Bret didn't want to lose the title in Canada because I think a lot of people looked up to Bret in Canada. Bret wanted the match to possibly end in a DQ and allow him to walk out onto Raw the next night and forfeit the title to Vince, then give his farewell speech and go to WCW.
@Joshuaknox2001 You know, I wonder if Bret wouldn't have put up such a stink had he been asked to drop the title to Undertaker or Austin that night. Yes, I realize that he was sensitive to the fact that he was looked upon as a hero, but this is a worked sport. I honestly think this had more to do with Bret's acrimony toward Shawn than it had with losing in Canada on his last match.
Wow. Wrestling fans really are idiots. Obviously Bret Hart was in on it as well.
Shawn Michaels gets a new belt, Vince McMahon and WWF get a new champ, Hart gets to forfeit his belt without looking like a sellout, gets a huge boost of publicity heading into his new job and to this day people are still talking about it. It's a win-win-win situation.
@JohnWoo we know everyone's in on it, we just like to buy into the story. if you saw the sixth sense, then said "wow, couldn't believe bruce willis turned out to be a ghost" and someone said "NUH DUMBASS IT'S NOT REAL" how would that feel? i'm not trying to suggest that was your reaction it was actually a smart analysis just saying
I don't think Vince had a choice. Brett leaving without losing the title in the ring would have been disastrous to the wwe with wcw being as powerful as it was then.
@dlzoidberg Bret said he wanted to drop the belt to any one of Stone Cold, Mick Foley or the Undertaker. Why was Vince hell bent on having Shawn win it? Because for some reason he bent over backwards for Michaels.
@FinnSolomon I think I remember it being said, that when Shawn wrestled about 180 nights in a row during one stage, which may be why Vince thought he deserved it. I thought Brett didn't want to lose the title in his own country period.
@dlzoidberg Be that as it may Bret still had creative control written into his contract, which Vince agreed to. Bret had offered to lose to Shawn, but that was before all the personal crap Shawn publicly said about his family.
According to Bret it was never about losing in Canada. Like he said he's lost countless times in Canada. It was about losing to Shawn Michaels in Canada. Foley and Austin have confirmed in their books Bret wanted to drop the belt to them, and Taker too.
@FinnSolomon Bret respected Taker. I don't think he'd of had a problem losing that night had he been booked against Taker, Austin or Owen. He may not have liked it, but I think he would not have been adament against losing had it been against one of those guys.
@FinnSolomon I'm sure that Bret had wanted to close out his in ring career similar to how Flair and Michaels were able to end their's. I'm sure it weighs on Bret's mind to some degree. Instead of having a WM retirement match against Angle, Rock, Jericho or CM Punk, he instead gets a McMahon match. It's a shame that his match with Goldberg that ended his career will overshadow the one he had with Benoit a few weeks earlier.
@jkcp1000 well the wwe itself said that either the montreal screwjob, stone cold winning the 1996 king of the ring or stone cold winning agaisnt shawn michaels at wrestlemania 14 was the start of the atittude era...
Bret was looking out for Bret's best interest and Vince was looking out for Vince's best interest. Looks like Vince has a little bit more pull in his own company than Bret. Jeez, get over it everybody.
@KevinRDK it's not a matter of him selling out. The whole thing was based off Vince's fears for Bret not good with dropping the title before officially under contract with WCW Bret wanted to forfeit the title the next night on RAW only he would officially be under contract with WCW. Vince was not sure what Bischoff might try and pull. He felt he couldn't take that risk. When Bret did not want to drop the belt to HBK, Vince screwed Bret out of the title and actually saved his company.
Everyone keeps sayin dat Bret deserved it when this was because a Vince n his Corporate Bohemian Kliq
Bret signed a 20 year deal. He was already the top man besides Shawn at the time. Vince shudda compromised and let Bret drop the title the next night or whatever. That wudda been better n a cooler way out.
in all honesty even if you disagree with it, bret got what he deserved. you don't knowingly sign a 20 year contract then go back on it a few months later. also, vince should have honored bret's wishes but he did not want another aludra blayze situation. also, his contract was up at survivor series and he claims he would go on raw w/o contract and drop the title? give me a break.
@erics2056 it was Vince who wanted to cancel the contract not Bret. His contract was up three weks after Survivor Series, not at survivor series. Get your facts straight
@The1ShottyGunn Because he wanted to retain the title in his own country? Shawn completely disrespected the Canadian flag, and like Bret says, if he did that with an American flag, he would have been lynched. Bret should've retained the title in Canada. Granted, Bret takes his fan base way too seriously but no one worked harder for Vince than he did, plus his initial contract gave him creative rights up until the last 30 days. Deserved it...really? Vince was a scumbag.
To tell you the truth I think Bret and Shaun were both screwed because if you go to the video backstage it shows shaun saying that he swears to god he didnt know nothing about it. Then he took all the blame from vince Mcmahon
i heard the other wrestler who were at the same time as bret used to say he had a big ego... i like bret but he is no saint as his fans believe!!
considering what alundra blayze did with womens title in wcw i think what vince did as a business man was needed!! he panicked bret would do the same thing with wwf title !!
@dzhurma oh come on. Neither Bret or Vince are angels but breaking an agreement is never a good thing and Vince did that. It made great t.v. etc but put yourself in Brets shoes. Bret was willing to get pinned by Shawn th enext night on Raw.
Vince didn't screw anybody. Monday Night Wars were at their best, the fact of the matter is that Brett Hard was selling out for WCW and he did what was best for himself so Vince did what was best for his business, simple as that. I hate Vince and his WWE PG era but no way did he screwed Brett.
@GonzoeKb24 no, monday night raw was not at its best, in fact they were making less money then anticipated and were unable to pay bret what his massive contract stated. vince told bret he wanted to keep him but he would have to pay him less, and to feel free to check if WCW would offer more money, they did. vince acted as if he was going to help hart with his transsition smoothly then fukt him. vince was definetly the bad guy.
@eazyduzzit33 Well no it was not at the part of shawn winning.. Vince told bret he would keep hes title at that match but Vince screwed bret big time.. and no it was not scripted it was real on that part.
Bret Hart if not the best wrestler in the business for 14 years didn't want to give his belt to shawn at Montreal, he clearly said to Vince that he would drop it on Raw but not on his on Territory, Vince always had a Knack of screwing people throughout his business life, and even Undertaker was the guy who actually got into Vince's Locker room at the end of Survivor Series and dragged him to see Bret.
@danielbhoycfc That's supposedly the case. Some people believe it was actually scripted although intended to be perceived as non-scripted but who knows? I doubt all the parties involved would have kept it a secret this long, especially with Bret going to the rival company.
Thats bullshit what vince says in every interview, "bret screwed bret" thats fuckin bullshit. Vince knows that he screwed bret and he always will. I dont blame bret one bit for spitting in that mans face. I would have too.
The one thing I never got out of this whole screwjob, was how they filmed EVERYTHING backstage, all the arguements and even this! How do u explain that WWE!
@mikewiz316 This footage came from a documentary they were doing on Bret Hart. (Not WWE footage, but Bret Hart footage). It was called "Wrestling With Shadows." So that is where this footage came from. WWE obviously has some of the SAME footage, but they've never AIRED the backstage (argument) stuff.
@TrueTalkTV Nevermind. I actually stand corrected. If you watch WWE "Confidential" on this piece, they DO show some of that footage. You are absolutely right. So, it looks like they DID film it. Probably due to the reason @yihd said.
I know wrestling is fake but still Vince, Shawn, Triple H and even the ref Earl should all be ashamed of themselves for thinking it up and going through with it, specially when its against the guy who has helped lead the company after the Hogan/Warrior era!
People forget that Bret turned down 9 million dollars for 3 years of work to stay with WWE for half of that and for a much greater length of time. It was Vince who wanted out of the deal and who wanted Bret to go to WCW. Bret would have done anything he was asked except lose the title to a person who had disrepected him and who had dropped the title before because of injury (that Bret didn't believe was legitimate) rather than lose to Bret.
@Interioroutbreak69 no, bret hart was initially going to win (they had talked and bret didn't want to lose the title, especially in monteal) but vince knew this would mean he was going to take the title to wcw so he decided to screw him and shawn volunteered to be the guy to do it.
@Interioroutbreak69 the screwjob wasn't fake. The script was changed without telling Bret hart. But almost all matches (this one being an exception) are scripted, although there do happen things by mistake (like in the Hell in a Cell Mankind vs. Undertaker, when the roof breaks). But some parts are real.
@fridogg I disagree. Bret held this against them for 8 years until he signed to do the DVD and the Hall of Fame induction. This was a shoot, and panic on Vinces part.

Anyway, that's what I believe happened...
targethonda 8 months ago
Vince didn't want it to happen twice. Alundra Blayze left the companywith the women's championship and burned it, and threw it in the trash on WCW. Bret Screwed Bret, honestly. Why would Bret wanna leave!? Its the WWE!
markis8437 11 months ago

I remember in 08 they came to NZ and I was surprised that CM Punk had the money in the bank briefcase on him at the airport.

god i knew understood the montreal screwjob
i need someone to explain it cause im too lazy to watch 3 videos of it haha
monkeyfrogs106 1 year ago
@monkeyfrogs106
it was a tittle match between Bret and Shawn Micheals. Bret was supposed to win, but at the last second vince switched it and made it so Micheals would win. So when Micheals put Bret in a shark shooter, the ref ordered the bell to be rung almost instantly crowning Micheals the new Champion despite Bret never even tapping out.
ScrewLimbBizkit 1 year ago
@ScrewLimbBizkit Actually, Shawn was originally supposed to win the match against Bret, but Bret didn't want to lose the title in Canada because I think a lot of people looked up to Bret in Canada. Bret wanted the match to possibly end in a DQ and allow him to walk out onto Raw the next night and forfeit the title to Vince, then give his farewell speech and go to WCW.
Joshuaknox2001 1 year ago
@Joshuaknox2001 You know, I wonder if Bret wouldn't have put up such a stink had he been asked to drop the title to Undertaker or Austin that night. Yes, I realize that he was sensitive to the fact that he was looked upon as a hero, but this is a worked sport. I honestly think this had more to do with Bret's acrimony toward Shawn than it had with losing in Canada on his last match.
jstephenj 1 year ago
JohnWoo 1 year ago
@JohnWoo we know everyone's in on it, we just like to buy into the story. if you saw the sixth sense, then said "wow, couldn't believe bruce willis turned out to be a ghost" and someone said "NUH DUMBASS IT'S NOT REAL" how would that feel? i'm not trying to suggest that was your reaction it was actually a smart analysis just saying

I don't think Vince had a choice. Brett leaving without losing the title in the ring would have been disastrous to the wwe with wcw being as powerful as it was then.
dlzoidberg 1 year ago
@dlzoidberg Bret said he wanted to drop the belt to any one of Stone Cold, Mick Foley or the Undertaker. Why was Vince hell bent on having Shawn win it? Because for some reason he bent over backwards for Michaels.
FinnSolomon 1 year ago
@FinnSolomon I think I remember it being said, that when Shawn wrestled about 180 nights in a row during one stage, which may be why Vince thought he deserved it. I thought Brett didn't want to lose the title in his own country period.
dlzoidberg 1 year ago
@dlzoidberg Be that as it may Bret still had creative control written into his contract, which Vince agreed to. Bret had offered to lose to Shawn, but that was before all the personal crap Shawn publicly said about his family.
According to Bret it was never about losing in Canada. Like he said he's lost countless times in Canada. It was about losing to Shawn Michaels in Canada. Foley and Austin have confirmed in their books Bret wanted to drop the belt to them, and Taker too.
FinnSolomon 1 year ago
@FinnSolomon One is saying this, another is saying that. I guess we will never know for sure.
dlzoidberg 1 year ago
@FinnSolomon Bret respected Taker. I don't think he'd of had a problem losing that night had he been booked against Taker, Austin or Owen. He may not have liked it, but I think he would not have been adament against losing had it been against one of those guys.
jstephenj 1 year ago
@FinnSolomon I'm sure that Bret had wanted to close out his in ring career similar to how Flair and Michaels were able to end their's. I'm sure it weighs on Bret's mind to some degree. Instead of having a WM retirement match against Angle, Rock, Jericho or CM Punk, he instead gets a McMahon match. It's a shame that his match with Goldberg that ended his career will overshadow the one he had with Benoit a few weeks earlier.

Bret sold out! What did he expect. He deserved what he got.
KevinRDK 1 year ago
@KevinRDK it's not a matter of him selling out. The whole thing was based off Vince's fears for Bret not good with dropping the title before officially under contract with WCW Bret wanted to forfeit the title the next night on RAW only he would officially be under contract with WCW. Vince was not sure what Bischoff might try and pull. He felt he couldn't take that risk. When Bret did not want to drop the belt to HBK, Vince screwed Bret out of the title and actually saved his company.
HBKvsTazMUDM 1 year ago
Everyone keeps sayin dat Bret deserved it when this was because a Vince n his Corporate Bohemian Kliq
Bret signed a 20 year deal. He was already the top man besides Shawn at the time. Vince shudda compromised and let Bret drop the title the next night or whatever. That wudda been better n a cooler way out.
Jelly420ful 1 year ago
@Jelly420ful yeah bret deserved it. and if he cant deal with losing in his country he is just a crybaby
IASP17 1 year ago
in all honesty even if you disagree with it, bret got what he deserved. you don't knowingly sign a 20 year contract then go back on it a few months later. also, vince should have honored bret's wishes but he did not want another aludra blayze situation. also, his contract was up at survivor series and he claims he would go on raw w/o contract and drop the title? give me a break.
erics2056 1 year ago
@erics2056 it was Vince who wanted to cancel the contract not Bret. His contract was up three weks after Survivor Series, not at survivor series. Get your facts straight
leb3186 1 year ago
@The1ShottyGunn Because he wanted to retain the title in his own country? Shawn completely disrespected the Canadian flag, and like Bret says, if he did that with an American flag, he would have been lynched. Bret should've retained the title in Canada. Granted, Bret takes his fan base way too seriously but no one worked harder for Vince than he did, plus his initial contract gave him creative rights up until the last 30 days. Deserved it...really? Vince was a scumbag.

GonzoeKb24 1 year ago
@GonzoeKb24 no, monday night raw was not at its best, in fact they were making less money then anticipated and were unable to pay bret what his massive contract stated. vince told bret he wanted to keep him but he would have to pay him less, and to feel free to check if WCW would offer more money, they did. vince acted as if he was going to help hart with his transsition smoothly then fukt him. vince was definetly the bad guy.

I doubt all the parties involved would have kept it a secret this long, especially with Bret going to the rival company.

mikewiz316 1 year ago
@mikewiz316 It was bret's last day. they wanted to record it. like stone cold's last match

TrueTalkTV 1 year ago
@TrueTalkTV Nevermind. I actually stand corrected. If you watch WWE "Confidential" on this piece, they DO show some of that footage. You are absolutely right. So, it looks like they DID film it. Probably due to the reason @yihd said.

apljpod 1 year ago
I know wrestling is fake but still Vince, Shawn, Triple H and even the ref Earl should all be ashamed of themselves for thinking it up and going through with it, specially when its against the guy who has helped lead the company after the Hogan/Warrior era!
TheVerdictIs 1 year ago
People forget that Bret turned down 9 million dollars for 3 years of work to stay with WWE for half of that and for a much greater length of time. It was Vince who wanted out of the deal and who wanted Bret to go to WCW. Bret would have done anything he was asked except lose the title to a person who had disrepected him and who had dropped the title before because of injury (that Bret didn't believe was legitimate) rather than lose to Bret.
djamesc 1 year ago
@djamesc The question is that if the ones who pays you asks you to lose the title as he sees fit, you can talk with him but not refuse to lose it.
TheRealAxelFury 1 year ago
wasn't the screwjob fake? I thought everything in wwe was fake.
Interioroutbreak69 1 year ago
@Interioroutbreak69 no, bret hart was initially going to win (they had talked and bret didn't want to lose the title, especially in monteal) but vince knew this would mean he was going to take the title to wcw so he decided to screw him and shawn volunteered to be the guy to do it.
2009DanielWright 1 year ago
@Interioroutbreak69 the screwjob wasn't fake. The script was changed without telling Bret hart. But almost all matches (this one being an exception) are scripted, although there do happen things by mistake (like in the Hell in a Cell Mankind vs. Undertaker, when the roof breaks). But some parts are real.
