I saw this when it aired on CNN. There's like 5 more minutes that we are not seeing here or on CNN's website. What's missing here is Mr. Vandenbosch also telling CNN that parents have tried to pawn their children to him. He said he'll take the kids for a couple of nights and the wife will make them dinner. That seemed weird to me. In fact, something seemed off about the whole interview.
Wait! Any active duty soldier knows he can walk into any AAFES Exchange or Base Uniform Shop and buy another. For about $35 bucks. So the soldier tells a sob story to the store owner, who probably offers him stupid money for the medal. The soldier has some beer money for the night, and Mr Pawn Owner eventually figures out he's been burned. So how does Mr Pawn make up for his loss? How about calling the local newspaper and telling the story, generating a ton of foot traffic into his store.
@tjlane55 Very possible. 39.99 plus shipping for a full-size one made by the official US government provider. Most Purple Hearts are not given with any documentation or certificates so there isn't even proof most could give that would tell someone it's real.
