To skyingat: Too bad saturday passed, I love a holiday party :-)
To psalmsurfer1: This is the beauty of art, man. I havent lived with this song (like many of you die-hard fans), it's new to me (especially the lyrics). This time when I hear/read them, I think of the death /derth of creativity in the world (Drink up you dreamers, you're running dry)...here comes the flood of technology, fascist thinking (however claoked & subtle), litigation, etc. Bravo Mr. Gabriel (so prescient).
I wish all the people whom commented on this were coming to my party on saturday. I dont think that Peter ever did use up what he used to be, thank goodness.
PG is a musical legend. He is still producing great albums now. Proper written music. I love it, this guy is a leg(end). This is the best version of this song imo.
Wow, what range & feeling... and I love the cryptic lyrics. I've only heard this song by Bette Midler, and usually love the first version I hear (if I like a song at all), but this spare, haunting version by the (I assume) original writer is strong & powerful as well.
Thanx for posting. This is technology at it's best (I might never have heard this otherwise), although ironically, I think that's what the song is warning us about.
OK, so besides thats Kate Bush in the middle..... back at the NEC 8? half the arena emptied and locked out and PG steps back on to the stage to deliver that. now thats a memory
What a find... Thanks so much for posting. Amazing to see how dramatically Peter stripped down his music when he left Genesis. I had no idea this beloved song was on his first solo album.
Great rare, intimate version, thank you for sharing. Does anybody else think the show's audio engineers went way overboard on effects for his vocal signal? He sounds like he's drowning in them
Incredible, He alone with his piano could perform it as touching as he did with an orchestra in the album version... Thanks veeery much for posting it!
This is really moving. I want to be there so bad. I want to be able to hug him. I watch it every six months or so. And I probably will for the rest of my life. I was 10 years old when this was recorded. I didn't know there was a man named Peter Gabriel until I was about 14, and then I never forgot about him.
This is really moving. I want to be there so bad. I want to be able to hug him. I watch it every six months or so. And I probably will for the rest of my life.
I remember this when it was first shown on TV. What a show it was. What a shame Kate was so reluctant to follow this upo with live performances. This Gabriel song was on his first solo LP (Showing my age). Wonderful
I saw PG on the _So_ tour in 1987. He was surprised that so many here in Houston, TX were familiar with "Solsbury Hill", and near the end of the show, he said, "It seems we have some old friends here tonight," and then began this song. His fingers slipped, and he stopped playing for a moment, and said, "in my profession, that is what is known as a fuck-up." There was friendly laughter and he started again. I love this song, and this version you have posted is excellent.
There used to be a full live band version on youtube with a vintage around the same time this was recorded. It has since disappeared. Tony Levin was in that performance, I don't recall the other personnel. Maybe one of the Prince's Trust concerts, Policeman's Other Ball...? Not sure. I'm thinking 1979. Anyone?
according to Peter Gabriel this is his preferred version, it wasn't meant to be anything more than him and a piano the studio version was the producers idea
@mikeartist A great song is one you listen to again 35 years after you first heard it. No one can take that away from you, try as they might. Gabriel is undoutably exceptional.
InstantBrother you pretend to be someone you are not. This is InstantBrother3 aka BrettVallier.
Anyhow, P Gabriel is fab, always has been and I listen to him all the time not just on the solitary night to which your comment refers. Maybe you should take a look at your own, misinterpret the joy of others, lay criticism and spoil the moment. I do not question your adoration of the man's music and I am glad that he affects you so. This is not an exclusive club, we can all enjoy.
@MrChickentikka - Out of all the things to say about this Masterpiece, you are commenting about the weight of someone from their television appearance from 30 years ago? That's it? That's all you have to offer to this small but quality pool of fans that still recognize art and amazing music in this day and age? Look again, the stages change, the instruments change, his hair is gone... Does any of this matter? He will leave a legacy to us fans. You will leave nothing as your post conveys...
wow... I will never forget after seeing PG for 8 years.... he finally came out as a second or third encore and performed this alone... still gives me shivers....
I remember seeing this Christmas show on TV, I must have been 12 at the time. I thought he was going to do a nice carol - and he came out with "Here comes the Flood" , which seemed pretty dark in that context...It has since become one of my favourite PG songs, but I still remember that moment of shock..
@bowiefan517 solsbury hills mine, it reminds me of my dad. He has been in a band forever, in cali. I finally saw him after many yrs last yr. I went to his show, and knowing what the song meant to me, he and his brother sang it for me, it was so good, and I cried! Now my 16 y.o. cant listen to it w/o crying b/c of ME! I have told her what it means to me, I had it at my wedding and want it at my funeral.
What a quirky intro! Gotta love Kate Bush. So nice to see Gabriel from the '70s. If I had to pick ONE Gabriel song ( luckily, I don't), this might be it. I dig every version, including this spare solo take. I'm a Genesis fan, but the musical/psychological/spiritual leap Gabriel took from the band to his first solo album is one of the most profound in the history of rock. IMHO.
His first solo album is usually referred to as "DO", as in "do re far me so" for the first 5 albums, number 5 is titled So . Where does "Car" come from ?
The album is usually known as "Car" because the album cover shows Peter Gabriel sitting in a car. His second album is usually called "Scratch" and the third album "Melt", also because of the covers. His fourth album is usually called "Security".
I have never seen those albums referred to as "Do", "Re", "Mi" "Fa". Maybe some people use those titles but I have always seen them referred to as "Car", "Scratch", "Melt" and "Security".
"Do Re Mi and Fa" is a fantheory really. Personally, I call them all Peter Gabriel because that's what they're all called and I am THAT bloody-minded.
MysticalMoon, just sing! Sing it boy! It doesn't matter if it sounds perfect. It is great as long as you have fun doing it! :-) I just sing along to anything and everything, it sounds bad but I don't care. :D

@johnnahodil What vibraphone? Gabriel used a Yamaha CS-80 and that thing is an analog synthesizer. A vibraphone is something completely different.
