I still remember the first time I heard this in 1982. I was in my high school weight room working out and this song came on the radio and someone said "what is this, Muzak (i.e. elevator music...lol)?" It took a little while for this to grow on people (some people anyway...lol). Although I was a rocker (Dio, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, etc) and hung out mostly with rockers, I did end up liking this song after listening to it a few times. Joe Jackson is a great musician. :)
@heheDawgz...Yep, backing tracks too. Most 80's music shows did this. It didn't bother me personally. IMHO, there's nothing worse than an artist that's good on tape, but bad live. *Cough* Def Leppard *Cough* :)
One of the great singer/songwriters who always worked with great musicians. Check out Graham Maby on bass, a great bass player. Listen to him on the track Friday from I'm The Man album....awesome!!!!
esta é a verdadeira musica dos anos 80' , quem viveu esta decada maravilhosa sabe muito bem o que estou falando, this is the music, great song, tks BetaClassics, tks......
Saw him perform this (and many others) in a piano bar at the South Center Inn in Edmonton, Alberta in 1983 - clasic. 28 years later, JJ is still one of the best.
Probably the first British artist since the 1950s to make the Jazz sound commercial again in pop music as he comes from Jazz background himself. Then Sade and Spandau Ballet followed, then the late Amy Winehouse popularised the Jazz sound again in pop music recently. All creative artists who loved Jazz and wanted to incorporate it in Pop and show young people Jazz sound is cool.
@justblu03 Just saw your post about New Frontier. Not sure if you've listened specifically to Larry Carlton's guitar work on that, but do yourself a favor and REALLY listen to the entire thing. It's one of the finest examples of brilliant "underplaying" ever. His fills are pure genius, never repeat and get cooler all the time. I have a Steely Dan tribute band and we play New Frontier a lot. It's fantastic.
I've heard this song many times over the years but never knew who sang it and it never hit a chord with me like it did when seeing Joe and The Roots perform it on Jimmy Fallon's show. That lead me here and to learn more about Joe Jackson. It was very much live on LNWJF warts and all and it sounds so damned cool.
Blimey. I should've known better than to watch something he was forced to do against his will...or one would hope! A spot on "Solid Gold" where they weren't allowed to play live? With that lineup??? Travesty.
Much love for JJ...but he was a naughty, naughty purist musician here. I won't even utter or type the two words that come to mind when witnessing a staged "live" act. Gotta do whatcha gotta do, I s'pose.
awesome song , how time flies by , I wasn't sure when this song came out until now .
I was at the bookstore and then it came on the radio , I was thinking what year did this song come out ........ I have to say ....Songs in the 70, 80, 90s are pretty cool , so far my favorites are in the mid 70's ( 77 / 78 ) . 2000's songs some you can't understand what they're playing / singing , to radical .
This song was such a ubiquitous part of the soundtrack of my life in the early 1980s. When Solid Gold came on WFLX 29 at 6PM on Saturday nights in West Palm Beach, Florida, you had a decision to make: stay home and watch the show, or go to the mall and spend some time flipping through vinyl 33s or cassettes at the record stores before the mall closed at 9PM.
@bigbrojack Ahh..the good old days when going to the record store to look at album covers was a form of entertainment...we used to do that at least once a week and loved it...
@5pugmom amen to that one, from the Charleston to Speak easy's and old Packard Limo's :-) lets go and paint the town red like our grandparents used to do when they were young :-) get your dress on. lets go
Great song! I was in the navy (1981-1983) when this song came out. I was assigned to the guided missile destroyer USS LUCE DDG-38 that was undergoing an overhaul in the Phil.,PA naval shipyard on broad street. Great memories of steppin out on the town with fellow shipmates & hearing great songs like this. Anyone on the USS LUCE DDG-38 from 1982 to 1983 give me a shout on my youtube channel.
@ddderrick Lol ! I just heard this song on TV too. It must have been the same Target commercial. I wasn't paying that much attention. I was on the computer.
@telefalls Yep, I am asking the same thing right now. lol
"YES" did the same thing with a few of there songs from the 70's. I think the lip synch ruins the show. I don't like "pre-recorded stuff " at a concert also. It's nice when you see the band playing live & the "Real" stuff as they are doing it :-)
Great singer great song....love 80's but was he singing or miming?? Non of the keyboards were plugged in....So have they found a New way of playing Live???
@pogsboo I know right, lol. I love the 80's music. I always wondered as a kid how this type of performance sounded exactly the same as on the radio or cassette tape.
okay, so for one, the main bass-line kick, or "beat", of this song is really the perfect FAP rhythm; a little odd and unnerving huh? Secondly, this song, albeit with some new words inserted, reminds of business men in fancy cars on their way to work in the 80s. it goes a little something like this, "get into my bens and drive.... to the financial work hive!" .... "we are young but getting old before our time. we'll leave the suit and tie behind... don't you wonder what changed our minds?"
This is for all you guys that don't appreciate 80's music; you need to study music or at least feel it. Me and my band were during the Beach Boys and Beatles, but we appreciate all good music. And the 80's were great. And as usual the UK lead the way. BP-USA
I remember so vividly taking a girl who I loved to his concert a the Horden Pavilion in Sydney back in 1983.She was so blown away by him I was in like Flynn. It was the masterstroke of my life.
I don't mind lip synch if they really commit too it and act like they're really playing...hey they prolly played the notes n the studio...sometimes lip synch is just to get a better sound for broadcast
the instrument playing in this video is fake. The bass player for example is playing a bass guitar. Everyone knows well the bass came from a sequenced Mini-Moog. The Prophet 5 could not make a convincing piano sound to save it's life. As you can see none of the instruments are hooked up.
@drpepper5001 I was born in the 90s. It sucks. The music is terrible. Aside from grunge, nothing of worth came out in the 90s music-wise. That's when boy bands and rap took over and ruined music. This song is the life blood of the 80's and sound be the mantra for the future - Joe Jackson remains on the horizon as a classic ICON with one of the world's most memorable songs - this song worked everywhere you where from New York to London to Japan to Warsaw - L.A.- Paris -Chile - Argentina -Africa - wherever - it stills spans the sands of time. Joe Jackson is the greatest and this song proves it - and does he not look so cute here!!!!!!!!!!
Giving this song a thumbs down is like spitting on the Mona Lisa or dropping your pants in front of the Queen of England. You just don't do it! Go watch some AutoTune artist on YouTube and give THEM a thumbs down!!!
@thamo2000 What a coincidence ! I just wanted to write that this song makes me feel good , then i read your comment ... Well , I hope there ' s no darkness in your life... Wish you all the best !
I hear this at my work all the time and couldn't figure out the name of this song until one of my co-workers told me. I'm glad he did, this song is a guilty pleasure.
Brings me back to WWL New Orleans at night, before television, when I could sneak a listen to 10:00 late night music. In what way? The theme of that show was Rhapsody in Blue. Think steppin out into a dawk MidCity nawlins nite as a little girl, magnolia tree on the lawn in bloom, in Faubourg St. Jean on Bayou St. John.... maybe 12. Humidity 100%, mosquitos buzzin and swimming in magnolia and gardenia. Steppin out yawl dawlins............
I always play this when I'm getting ready for a night out.

Okay, who the hell gave this song a thumbs down?! When I find out who you are, I'm going to put you in a North Korean labor camp!
