  • I simply MUST say that this is THE MOST helpful video illustrating the tones of mandarin!

Too many other uploaders pronounce the tones too slowly and far apart. The most helpful thing for me is the you pronounced them ALL TOGETHER at the end, because it the listener some context for how the tones sound next to each other! :)

  • @awkwardk28 ( *because it **gives** the listener * )

  • This is an excellent explanation! I would very much like to learn to speak Mandarin, perhaps this will inspire me to try to learn more!

  • This is the first lesson video I've watched that doesn't make the 2nd and 3rd tones sound the same to me. Great video, very helpful! :-D

  • high, these 4 tones are great, but according to some other lady there are 5 tones instead of 4.

  • @yalilar2820 There is another light tone. If that is counted, there are 5 tones.

  • @yanghaiying ohh, ok because i was getting confused. i would like to learn chinese . but i don't learn as fast as i would like to, acoording to you what would be the best way or strategy to learn this lenguage?

  • @yalilar2820 Practice. Try to listen and speak as much as possible.

  • @yanghaiying What should i start learning first, phrases, tones, alphabet??? please help (i learn by the internet because no one i know speaks chinese)

  • @3salinas why do you learn chineseN if for talking with people; learn tone; phrase. if for reading, learn characters.

  • @yanghaiying oh its because i really like chinese TV and it annoying because i have to read the subtitles every time so i reallllllllyyyyy want to be able to understand things better:) Thank you for ur help!

  • I love studying language. :D

  • I got it until you went fast... then I could hardly hear it, haha.

Also, I can't get my throat to sound like the third tone when spoken fast, you make the sound from deeper in the throat than I'm used to, but I'll keep practicing.

  • How about a part 2 and then some ! I am picking up mandarin by watching subtitles on my kung fu movies and then watching what they are saying at the time.

  • Thank you for your interest, but there are tons of professional videos out there. Is there a need for me to do that?

  • Can you make a suggestion of a good one to choose for learning mandarin?

  • I don't know about video learning, though this company do have some videos, but they do have great audio: ChinesePOD is where I learned my Chinese from mainly.. but as yanghaiying has said, it's all about practising. I do between 1 and 2 hours of book study per day plus speak with Chinese people about 1 hour per day.. everyday of the week! :)

  • Your method of learning chinese is less complicated. I've tried other programs, and they don't teach you very good. Thanks for posting this video ^-^

  • Great video!

  • Fantastic and truly helpfull video...

the best explanation i ve ever seen!!!

  • you are truly brilliant! so many videos and books and I cant grasp chinese tones, and then finally I find you and your video!! I want to kiss you!

    xiexie!

  • thank you,very explained!!!

  • best explanation ever!!!

    thank you ^.^

  • Thankfully my native language also posesses tones ( just two - the first and the fourth) so that`s easily understandable, but hearing fast chinese speech, actually it`s harder to distinguish tones, they even change - noone seems to pronounce three characters in a row, each in a third tone, in that third tone. The first - is 3rd, and then... well enough said :)

  • xie xie ni!! =)

  • avec plaisir

  • The best tones explanation that i have ever heard thanks a lot from Mexico :)

  • It really helped me, you're an amazing teacher. Thanks a lottttttt

    From Brazil

  • excellent excellent <<< perfect teacher Allah bless you

  • excellent video and as a Mandarin learner, I learned a few things thanks again :)

  • Thank you for sharing this video about Chinese.I have been wanting to learn Chinese for a long time.

  • Estoy aprendiendo el chino en forma autodidacta y con esta lección he comprendido lo básico acerca de los tonos. Felicidades.

  • Do they not have plurals in Chinese or other Asian languages? One thing I notice in native-Asian speakers who speak English is they very often, if they haven't completely mastered the language, neglect the S at the end of words or attempt to differentiate it as plural.

  • We have plural form by adding the character "men". Different language has different grammar which is not easy to compare directly. Please check the featured video on my site. Thank you.

  • wow. this helped so much. I am currently learning chinese, and i have been having a hard time pronouncing some of the words because of the tones. lol but this defintely helped ALOT! 谢谢!~

  • Thank you so much...i have tried numerous online videos about tones and none really distinguish between the second and the third..but u did!! Thanks again this was so much help ..i finally get it now!!!

  • I've been learning Chinese for a while now, and I've been doing fine with writing, but speaking was pretty difficult for me. This video definitely helped me so much! 谢谢你!

  • Do you have a teacher, attending school? How many character can you read? I am curious. Thank you for passing by.

  • I was going to take it at my school, but somehow it wouldn't fit into my schedule. So I decided to just learn it on my own. I've been using books and the internet mostly. Thanks!

  • Awesome explanation. Thanks!

  • wow this is cool! thank you very much!

  • Finally! out of all the other lesson on site ur site is the most understanding and less complicating, the way you teach ur language made me get it!!! Xie ni! in my language we say "Kia ora" (key all ra!) means other than HEllo, also means THAnK U!!! Zai jian.

  • Kia ora. Of course you are from New Zealand. Remember, Chinese is less scary than bungy jumping, you can do it.

  • Kia Ora & Ni hao, Kwl 2 know dat u aware of where in da world i am!!!LOL!!! and yea, bungy jumping is less scary so dat help 2 know. Otherwise ive been pracisting (the basics) and self teaching myself through the net after all it is FREE so

  • i think this is the best explanation i've seen for the 4 tones! i'm currently teaching myself some mandarin in my spare time (my fiance is chinese :)

and i agree, there is something about 'speaking in pictures' that is helpful to many people, especially to other artists. thank you for making these videos!

  • ooohhh you are sooo good!!! you are very clear and speak in pictures!! we all can pick up on that!!! thank you!!!

  • This helps me alot!

  • Thank you for the pronunciations!! Your examples in English were very helpful!!

  • We develop our knowledge from known to unknown. I try to use my pain and experience in learning foreign languages (French and Portugese) to reason what my students might experience.
