@theeunloved1 deffinitley not under the tank. one of the options though is to put it on the side of the terrarium. this will keep your reptile from getting burnt.
I only tested with aspen bedding, but I don't know what kind of substrate geckos work with, but if you don't have a thermostat I would use thick substrate because the area above the mat is very hot, especially running at full power.
