  • great video..i actually use to do the form wrong like I see most people in the gym doing the bench...I would flair my shoulders out way to much. It also put a number on my rotar cuff. Now i tuck my elbows more and my chest gets extremely sore. I see better devolpment..Great video!

  • great video, excellent advise.  everything said was 100% accurate. A few years back I was having problems on bench, because I was doing things wrong like what Barthel pointed out that many people do, my elbow were high up and straight out, and I wasn't bringing the bar down below my chest. About a year ago I was working with a trainer and he fixed my form mistakes, and everything he taught me was 100% the same as what JR just explained.

    now I am breaking through plateaus and building.

  • off topic...i just got back from vacation and checked my supps like jack3d, superpump max and c4 and it looks like moisture got into it...they're clumpy and discolored a little and was wondering if this has happened to people with the concentrate PWO supps and if i should just skim the layer off the top and just shake it up and use it or get another batch. worried about effectiveness. jr?

  • what you're really doing it a close grip bench, which will put a lot of the weight onto the tri's as you're saying, but to stress the chest more, you do need to widen the grip, preferably so that your elbows do not go below the bench at the bottom.

  • if you feel shoulder pain its because you arent pinning your shoulder blades together for the bench press. also not bringing the bar down to the nipple line but more higer up nearer to the neck.

  • should you hold the bar more than shoulder width apart?

  • Try my workout JR and do a video about it please. I use to do more weigth but now where are about same 1rep max. I do 4 sets on incline, flat, decline, 2 sets of 5 with 305 on each 50 lb pounds from my max,and 2 sets of 15 on each 150lb from my max,and followed by 4 sets of 15 incline flyes. It's brutal get your friends try it too. Peace Out Bro . If your up to the challenge?

  • @jimsnoskate12 do it in 40 minutes 16 sets in all 2 half minutes per set 2minutes and 30 seconds x 16 equals 40 minutes. always start off with 5 rep range incline 2 sets , flat 2 sets, decline 2 sets , then the 15 rep range on 2 sets on each bench again for deep penatration of the muscle, followed by 4 sets of 15 incline flyes . try it yourself its agood chest workout.

I seem to have my rowing moments down but my width movements are lacking in actually recruiting all the fibers. I can never get a lat pump or even really feel like I'm working them.   • @andrew240895 you cant really isolate the "inner" chest, low body fat bur to me the biggest factor - squeezing the pecs as hards as you can through contraction really helps for a full development!

    also, if your form is correct, your arms should actually NOT want to lock out because of arm position.

    I got back in to working out heavy a few years back, should have never stopped, so much fun and I'm really getting into the nutrition now, protein and supplements. I've learned a lot from Barthel.

  • I never do flat bench I find it doesn't really do anything for me, Incline and declines are the only one's I do and my chest is pretty developed.

  • What do you think of a barbell press vs. dumbell press?

  • @BigMacXBL you get a better ROM on DB press which is why i prefer if can can get a good squeez at the top as you can move the dumbells more(e.g touch at top) while bench is good for piling on weight. your choice

  • This is solid advice man. This is what I do all the time with bench press and let me tell you that my chest gets destroyed every time and my strength increase is ridiculous.

    BCAA supplements helped me, but yeah :)

    i personally always lock out until i start to get tired then i finish the rest of my reps with partial movements.

  • Nice video JR. I agree with you, different people have different positions in which they feel their chest working more. I myself am a really bad barbell bench presser I gotta say. I prefer the Dumbbells because I can concentrate more on the chest but still experimenting with different positioning to get mine right. On the Jay Cutler note. Well Jay is amazing but I'd like Branch Warren to win this year to say the truth, love his intensity in training and he is my favorite IFFB Pro Bodybuilder
