Well it's a rather basic concept: they want to keep you as a customer. They're also making money each month with you being a customer because of the contract. The more customers they have, the more they make, the more people tell their friends to sign up, and so on. You cant get the phones for the $200 price unless you sign that 2 year contract with the carrier. :)
@StupidVids2009 Depends. If it's AT&T or T-Mobile, there is no contract attached. You just put your SIM card in and you're good to go, no contract required. If it's Verizon or Sprint, however, and the phone is still on the person's contract, you are not able to use it. They have to have it removed from their contract first. This means the balance must be paid off, the person has to release it from their account, or the person has to transfer the phone number to a different --

I don't understand, what are you signing up for when you get the phone with a contract? Like why would they charge only 200 bucks for the phone if they know they can get more for it?
