It should be pretty cool for the guy who has to walk along behind the rover on Mars with those massive wires on his shoulders....I wonder if that's a union job!
@ismelloftoothpaste i think there were problems with the panels as they got dust on them and stopped functioning properly or something along those lines
Never understood the wheel shape. Too bubbly but of course it probably tested and retested to death so yeah...just looks like something meant to clog in sand and dirt.
@Brommes Because if there is a problem with the rover on Mars, like it gets stuck, they can use the test rover to try out some things here, before trying them on Mars.
NASA could program mars rover to set explosive, withdraw to a safe distance and after checking send command from Earth to blow it up . After that rover would come closer and explore fresh crater . Why not?
@Boy75402 I thought about this. They could use explosive which consists of two parts a high-explosive main charge and electronic detonator , one part can't blow up without another.
If they wanted they could make some "safe" explosive ( not necessary big). Or even sent it separate from rover to the landing site, then rover could pick it up and set where they want ... It would be easier than to make heavy and powerful equipment to dig few meters below the Martian surface . And we need to dig below the surface because all secrets of Mars are there, may be even life....
And could anybody in this world answer my question: "Pools of liquid water may even now exist just a few meters below the Martian surface, according to new research. " Why NASA don't use explosive to explore Mars below the surface? Explosive can be light, small and powerful(it would be even more powerful on Mars because of Martian low gravity). It could make fresh craters few meters deep in one second.There are explosive that contains oxygen in itself, so it could blow up on Mars.
sand... the problem is that Martian ground consists not only of sand ; it has upper layer of dust (dust particles have size of cigarette smoke ). It seems that Spirit stuck in such dust . How they are going to simulate such dust?

Why don't we just drop a solar powered land rover on mars?

@MrAndersohn
Something tells me sending large explosives with a rover would add unnecessary risk.
