why in this day and age can we (as a human race) not have at least attempted this with the 911 incident then?, surely the US have numerous helicopters which could have been used and authorized to fly in close proximity in order to rescue doomed people on the upper floors. baffles the mind
Possibly there was 100 times more smoke, more heat, more updraft and from the video I saw, there was no-one visible on the roof. Wasn't the roof access barred or something as a prior security measure? I expect if they had a winch, it wasn't that long enough to facilitate a rescue sideways.
I tear up everytime I watch this. Watching the skill of the pilot and the bravery of the firefighter both putting their live's on the line for a stranger is absolutely beyond fucking words. Heroic doesn't even cover what these guy's do every day. When people say 'It's their job', it annoys the hell out of me. It takes a special person to do what they do every day and it should never be taken for granted. With all the shit in the world, these people put my faith back into humanity
thats Matt Moseley! from AFR HEAVY RESCUE 4. Ive had the privilege of working with him on the heavy rescue. He is now a captain for Johns Creek Fire Dept.
the highest praise for the heroic efforts of the helicopter crew!It proves that trained crew are indeed invaluable in times of crisis....well done guys!
I don't believe in heroes, I believe in people who trust in their skills and love put theirself in the first line...this fireman is one of that people.
Ok got to respond to this, the subtitle's coming up on the bottom of the video say's the fire was creating strong gust's of air, it doe's which is called an up draft. The air the chopper is fighting is from the wind gust from that day, look at the flag which isn't near the fire or the smoke being blown away from therescue point. Quit blowing thing's into what they aren't.
@coastalman226 A fire of that size can reach temperatures of 2000+ degrees. Being a friefighter and chemistry major who had studied fluid dynamics, the fire will create updrafts even some distance away because of the differece between the ambient temperature and the super heated gases rising from the fire. The major obstacle would have been the up draft. Flight characteristics also change due to the visocisty of the air which is directly proportional to the temperature. Subtitle was right.
@coastalman226 He isn't blowing anything out of proportion. The fire is creating what is called an artificial thermal column, not an up draft. This column rotates within a cylinder, hence why the flag is not flying upwards, but sideways. The helicopter has to fight this column, which sways the rescuer from left to right. And thermal columns can be larger than the actual fire sight, it's just the initial source that sparks it.
Another dull day at the office.

I would like to have a helicopter swing, but in a better safety device for the comfort, and a little longer, lets say 10-15 km distance.

Awseome video - great work by the pilot, crewie and in particular the fireman.
But what a disgrace a city such as this does not have a winch capable aircraft

I watched this on the news live, I had tears in eyes when they landed. I thank the creator everyday for giving us firefighters, police and EMS.
