There are many different type of socialisms! Social democrats that are the most common type of socialists in Europe for example, do not aim to state ownership economic system. They aim to social programmes wich make the society more egalitarian and offers people services that make their life better. Central planning or one party policis isn't in their aim either.

Through voluntary or by force? What does that mean? Both the state or the private owner need to pay from the labour! If it is the state, the laborer would probably earn higer salary, as the profit isn't shared to the investors and the leadership won't earn hundreds of times more than the laborer.

In the state ownership, the owner doesn't aim to get rich from the work of the people. In capitalistic system the investors aim to get rich and keep as much of the profit as possible.

I don't know if it requires much more administration to run a centrally planned than decentrally planned economies. The main difference is the location where it happens. Even in a state owned economic systems local people do run their business, according to the goals of the plans.

I don't think strongly centrally planned system (command economy) is too good. But the Soviet Union saw a rapid economic rise after WWII, and China was still a command economy 15 years ago.

I'm too young? I was born in early 60s, and live in Finland, right next to Russia. I know full well Soviet Union food lines (BTW, bread they ate more than westerners!), they had agriculture production problems, well mostly throughout the Soviet era. But the people's living standard and production both in heavy and consumer industry still saw a huge growth, topping the western growth for decades of time, all the way until the Brezhnev's stagnation era. It's not a debatable issue!

Nope, the people queueing for food were real, although that was mainly of the stagnation era thing. People did have food, but they didn't have GOOD things like meat, fish, fruits and such. And Soviet Union needed to import food: its agriculture never was run nearly as good as the industry.

Nope, the U.S. (or any west European country) agriculture produced better. But the industry production and living standard growth in the Soviet Union were faster than in the west.

Any form of collectivism amounts to redistribution of wealth which is good for nobody except the people in power at the time, so as it fails more control over the means of production is enforced.

The problem is very simple. Any time you have a monopoly (like single payer plan) and no competition, you wind up with either poor or no service. The answer to all this is free enterprise and competition. The libertarians were right all along. You need the government to set standards like for health and protection of the citizens, but otherwise the libertarian approach would solve the whole problem. If we'd export more than we import, like oil, we could probably even eliminate need for taxes.

I think his guest needs a few lessons in economics before he starts making suggestions on how to fix problems like health care, etc. People don't have a right to something someone else has to pay for, or when it involves the service of someone else, because then you can't have property rights, which is a natural right. Also, there are plenty of economic fallacies in believing a single payer system would even work. But to cut out all of the theory, just look to Canada and England for proof.

These still aren't natural rights, but when we drafted the Constitution we gave up a few liberties to give the government what it needed in order to perform its sole function, which is to protect our natural rights. However, health care is not the job of government to provide.
