Movies like this are scarier than movies about ghosts or monsters, because psychopaths like this actually exist. They can't stop hurting others, there's no cure, and they live amongst us all.
For people that dont get it, when the girl knocked on the front door she purposely asked for a random person just to check out the house and see how it looked through the door. This film is very underrated. I think it's one of the best horror films of the last decade. It relies on atmosphere and quietness to get its scares (which it mightiliy succeeds in doing), not "Saw"-esque gore that has never been scary at all. We don't get enough atmospheric horror these days.

"Because you were home" refers to how the people that did this in real life would break into homes and rob them. If you weren't home, they would go in and steal your stuff. If you were home, they would kill you and then rob you.

To the "Because you were home" thing, I think that's they're whole plan. They go knocking around on doors to see if you're home, and if you are, bingo. If not, then off to the next house.
