when i was visiting rome i saw plenty of those at roma termini and thought i was crazy because i know that there are no hummingbirds in rome...when we asked some people (obviously junkies) they just said: papillon. we tried to catch one for about two hours at night but they were too fast.
i loved the comments all put a bit of a smile and giggle on my face :D. Back to serous mode: a bird cannot have antenna and more than 2 legs so it's a type of moth...probably. Moths are fuzzy and their wings are smaller compared to their bodies. It;s a moth i often times tried to catch with my bare hands. I did manage to catch it once but i was affraid i would squish it or it would sting or something so it slipped right away.
Here ya go. I filmed one in ultra slow today in Souther France. Quite fascinating little creature :-) I will try to notify you when I put the slo-mo video up...

it a hybrid... looks like Daddy hummingbird got a lil frisky with a butterfly. But dont judge, its like a German having an affair with an American... or aliens....

This is exactly the "thing" I saw in our backyard at some flowers here in South Alabama. I was sure it was some sort of bug, but it's resemblance to a hummingbird is uncanny. I am very used to looking at hummingbirds, they're everywhere here, but this was about half the size. It even made the humming sound, and the wings, tail, and proboscis appeared to be almost identical in shape to a hummingbird. It's movements were also very hummingbird-like; pretty cool, I had never seen one before.
OMG! I just saw one outside my house in Maryland and came to look it up. The first of its kind that I've ever seen -- and unfortunately I do spend time looking! Thanks for posting this video.
Yea it seems like a humming moth to me i have several of those in the fields and i life on a ranch so not much to nuture there exept horse poop or cows manure.
