Absolutely stunning. If I hadn't been able to see you, I would have been sure you were Tuvan yourself. Everything here is so perfect, I don't think I can find the words to describe it.
Fascinating! And well done. This type of singing has an allure that sneaks up on you, it is beautiful and haunting at the same time, like listening to the distant past. Kudos for learning it. I'm off to work with that online crash course.
wonderful work. I have a question. I got everything down in throat singing, well at least the basics. But when I do overtones with khoomei I can hear the khoomei quite well. Should I be able to hear the khoomei a good amount or should the overtones overpower
I can't begin to describe how much I admire your performance here. There is a gorgeous melancholy and warmth simultaneously present in your voice. I would really appreciate it if you made a tutorial video or two on how you developed your technique. You really sing like a tuvan. Keep it up.
I just sat here transfixed watching/listening to this. So much strength and focus and inquisitiveness and charm and talent and experience comes through this song presentation from such a young man.
what impresses me is the pronunciation. if i only heard the voice i would pretty much be sure that you're either a Tuvan or some other Turkic language speaker.
A very clever fiddlefella to have learnt such an impressive show of control and inflection. You have the right mind now to not be caught up in the games that other people play. Congratulations for being yourself.
I saw him a few times, always playing this song - as it is definately a favourite of the audience... I've heard it so much times that I totally begin to hate this song!
Haha, no - really, even after millions of times this song remains it's strength. You must try to see these guys of Chirgilchin perform, they are great (and crazy) people, and will totally love your work.
Thanks! Yeah, I sure wish he would show me that Oidupaa style!! (he came to Santa Cruz last year, but told me to go to their workshop in TX when I asked him about the style)
Well, I learned the very basics from Brian Grover's online crash course. Since then, it's just been trial and error. :-)
Nope. A little too far to walk. ;-) (though they suggested that I take a bus or, pointing to my igil, a horse)
They'll be doing a workshop in CA this year, but it's about 3+ hours away, and I hate driving. (plus, I'd have to drive through SF, and that's always a nightmare) I'll try pleading with him again the next time Chirgilchin comes through town.
You're lucky Chirgilchin even performs in your city. If current trends persist, no Tuvan group will ever even set foot inside my town (Toronto). My friend and I had to travel 14 hours to see Alash. Well worth it, but still....
Oh, they actually went through Canada on the same tour they came here. On their site, all they said was "Canada Nov. 14-21 (or something), but nothing more specific than that though.
You're right, they did perform in Canada, but solely in the prairies from what I've heard. That's pretty much an entire continent away, and a part of the country that I generally spurn. Oh well, I guess I'll have to go directly to the source!

Wow I would be laughing if someone comes in running that door and hits you with the door moving you out of the way, interrupting this song.
PS. Great Video and quality.

Oh no no no. I have seen him preform :-). Only once though. He did do an accordion piece, though it wasn't this one. :-(
I hope they come to Santa Cruz more often! :-) They are indeed my favorites! :-) (and I have a few more instruments to show them)

P.S. How'd you learn?
