Very good breath control. This is a very difficult lied to sing at the right tempo. The pianist (unfortunately not named! ) could have used more pedal, which would have enhanced the performance as a whole, and it's a pity the correct ending wasn't played, but generally not bad.
My angelic mother Mary who is in heaven now used to love Schubert's Serenade. How I love this song in honor of my beloved adorable mother Mary the angel in heaven.
@CanadaPisces Thanks for sharing, CP, and for posting mnemonyxx. For a non-classical singer, Nana Mouskouri performs this beautifully; she is the European equivalent of Joan Baez.
Nana's voice is truly God-made that matches Schubert's heavenly serenade! Her voice was so beautiful that it always touches my heart and makes my eyes moist with emotion!! Thsi got to be a melody from Heaven and sung by an angel.......... A Chinese Tang poem fittingly describes this melody and voice: "此乐只应天上有,人间那得几度闻?“ In English it translates: "This sound could only be heard in Heaven; how us earthling be lucky enough to hear it on Earth?"

What I forgot to say: I personally do not like the pianist´s perfomance very much. To me it feels as if he has no connection to this wonderful and filigrane piece of music.
@Simusicaddict ; dir entgeht mal wieder nix! Bei mir war es nur ein stark diffuses feeling dass der Pianist keinen Bock hatte...dann erst hab ich deinen Kommentar gelesen...
Although I absolutely adore a Version of the young Fischer-Dieskau (I heard a unearthly amazing recording from 1948 on the radio - he was just 23 years old then!! - could not find it on the internet yet) I think Mrs.Mouskouri performs this song very very well and lovely and it moves me. Most important to me is that she sings the high parts of the melody softly and not (to my opinion) overdone like some opera singers tend to do.
A very nice rendering of this melody by nana. Those who prefer it in a more classical setting are welcome to have it so.This version in my opinion represents a gateway to the delights of classical song.
Sorry, this song is written for a classical voice (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone) Nana is a good singer but not for this kind of music. Listen to Wunderlich, Fischer-Diskau or Nathalie Stutzmann and you will hear how the the song has to sound.
Nana Mouskouri is a classically trained soprano. The fact that she is more famous for other types of music doesn't mean she can't sing classical (or more accurately Romantic) Era music.
I think that's very unfair towards Nana. She is gorgeous even though she is nearly thiry years older than I (yes: I am a child of the 1960s). That said, my favourite recording of Ständchen is by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (male tenor).
As a classical singer, I was expecting the worst of this video. Now I must admit: I am pleasantly surprised. She does know how to create the dreamily atmosphere this song is all about. Brava!
This is just very, very odd. I'm a classical singer too, and clicked it expecting a total shocker! Yes, it is better than expected, (actually I've heard classical singers massacre this piece) but I just can't get past the goaty vibrato, little mordents on every note and the weird slides...
Well, that is Mouskouri's way of singing, which works very well on this song. Which is, to be honest, more than could be said for her interpretations of 'Una furtiva lagrima' and 'Der Lindenbaum' ;-)
Actually Ms Mouschouri was a student in the Athens National Conservatory but she was expelled because she was also singing jazz in an Athenian club (although jazz singing was to finance her studies). She studied there classical singing for seven years ,
I have studied Classical Piano, but I have not studied Classical Voice. So far, I have been searching in vain for a good vocal rendition of this song and so far this is the best I've found. The problem I have with traditional classical singer's version of this song is that their voices are too good, too powerful, or too clean. But whatever it may be, it seems to my novice ears that they don't pay heed to the lyrics or the occasion of the song.
you have very sensitive and musical ears SmoothCruise and you are also a broad minded thinker. Lieder is indeed written for a drawing room setting and was specifically written for a small parlour audience. Powerful and too affected singing would totally spoil the effect of what the Composer is trying to portray. Plus Lieder singing was often rendered by the amateur and untrained singer to great effect.
To me, the lyrics and the melody, suggest an intimate and secluded setting, this precludes a particularly powerful voice. The wooer is not singing to a wide audience. Forte should be an emphasis not a yell. And of course (he) is wooing. A show of passion sounds more convincing by bending the rules. A purely classical style sounds too detached and clinical, for this melody; detachment is fine if you are after only the song and convincing your teacher or narrow minded classical audience.
But remember, as much as this is a song, it is also a serenade; an imploring for a tryst. I think you would have a richer, more challenging and more rewarding time to heed these two aspects.
