amazing.. and no how good you think you are--you'll *never* be this good, In your heart you know it, despite the superior press you receive. You'll never be *this* good. That's what keeps an artist striving for perfection---because we've heard it.
I read an essay by a music critic who think Skylark was the last song of its genre. That, following the war, romantic ballads took a different turn. I would have to agree. I still rank Hoagy Carmichael as a master of composition.
Johnny Mercer (whose lyrics reflected his brief affair with Judy Garland) and Hoagy Carmichael wrote this in 1941. Linda reintroduced the song to a new generation with this video [and the album it was featured on, "Lush Life"].
@fromthesidelines True, Linda reached many but a string of superstar covers kept this jazz standard fresh, like Anita O Day w/ Gene Kruppa in the 40's & the Clovers got it going in the 50's, & fabulous Bette Midler in the 70's. Linda doing it's of course perfection... Linda dismissed her superstar string of hits but said when she sang these tunes with Nelsen Riddle, that's when she found her "music she could live with". Of course we love ALL of Linda always, right?
I like this song. A very special person introduced me to this song and said it would give him chills just listening to it. And, this person rarely shared how music affected him and I felt so touched he shared this with me. I'll always love listening to this because of that moment. Too many people let people come and go in their lives never hesitating to just leave people in the past. Not me. I remember everyone and how they shared what they loved and cared about, especially favorite music,
I've always said it, somethings are suppose to be easy, simple without all that vocal running up and down. This is the best rendition that made me really appreciate this song.
NICE!! SWEET!!

Incidentally, that's harmonica virtuoso Tommy Morgan at :24 and 3:00- who acoompanied LInda on the original recording.
