@65metal Yes. The drummer is Leon Taylor, son of the deceased Mel Taylor. And yes, Bob and Nokie switched up between lead guitar and bass. Bob was the original lead guitarist. Not sure why they switched. But, good to see Bob back on lead guitar. I actually work with Bob's grandson. Pretty neat.
@daveandy1 Thanks for the info, I thought that may be the case that they either switched or alternated between eras and/or songs. Also interesting to know you work with Bob's grandson. Do the surviving members perform yet today? If so I would like to see them.
@Zeigler68 Sorry but The Ventures were virtually unknown in England The Beatles would have been more influenced by The Shadows. It was only guitar nuts like me who followed The Ventures. Even now in the whole of Europe the average pop fan wouldn't have heard of The Ventures
@fincaman2 they did tons of their own ..but never received the cdedit or airplay they deserved..tunes like endless dream ...surfrider...pedal pusher and at least a hundred more [ginza lights another one ]..were excellent instrumentals ..but only the people who followed this type music ever heard them ..no airplay ...
You fabulous folks got to come to Malaysia for a gig as there are a lot of oldies (still alive of course, well, some have gone to the happy hunting ground!) here who were influenced by your great music during the '60's.
Fantastic band......my all time fav group...R.I.P. Bob & Mel.........u guys gave me so much joy in my younger days, listening & trying to play like you (lead guitar).....sigh!!
There guys had so many hits, they just kept cranking out this awesome style of song and what a sound it was. Hard to settle on one song as a Favorite. As they all were great sound hits. Imagine the energy, The practice sessions to make this all happen. I hope everyone can appreciate them for what they did.
You youngsters taking up guitars listen very closely and watch the finger work here and how they blend into each other with lead and rythem. Nobody else has ever copied this .
THIS IS JUST THE BEST OF THE GREATEST EVER ! Man getting old just gets better with every passing day and it was my pleasure to live in this era with the greatest music man can make and we grew up with all of it . High School Dances , Parties , Drag Racing , Surfing , and then came Drugs and screwed up all of it !!
I have listened to the Ventures alll my life , and keep up with them. wish they would come back to the US its time for aother tour Guys .... Rip Bob Bogle Thanks for your music...
I've been loving this music since 1960...played in a garage band Philly area in the 60's... playing a 1958 Danelectro (still in the family!!).. I used the tailpiece as a vibrato on Walk Don't Run and Perfidia... people always loved this sound... still do!!!!
I have an original Mosrite and have no problem keeping it in tune. I got it in 1966 and have played it throughout the years. The only manufacturer that makes them now is Ed Roman in Las Vegas. Keep on a pickin'. I love the Ventures music and have played it for years.
Ventures are the reason I learned to play guitar. Imagine making a living at this? It's been great...now arthritis got me...bitch!! So now I teach. Man oh man look at Nokie go! Problem with the Mosrites - you could never keep them tuned.
I love these guys; have 88 of their albums. RIP Bob and Mel. Bob's guitar expression is superb, Don's a rhythm ace, Nokie we all know, and Leon plays like his father without a doubt! Did they really stop making the Ventures Aria guitars? Damn.....
0.52 1:43 I do not know music. Is the red guitar is bass guitar ? I love the sound. I also love the whole band. I hope they come to Toronto, Canada. I remember I heard these music before.
The red guitar is a Aria Ventures model - not made anymore and a copy of the original Mosrites they uses from '65 to '69. It has P90 pickups which are 'hotter' than the Mosrites. The bass being played is a Fender Ventures model P-bass reissued in '96 to 98?
i enjoyed these numbers which I used to play in my group during 70's. In 70's shadows and ventures were the most popular group and sought very much in India.
It is really great to listen to those numbers like
wow...these guys are still FABULOUS!...my brother learned a lot on his guitar from listening to these guys...the guy w. the beard even reminds me of my brother!..:)...great music!
Yes that is correct Fendervana But I think the JM Don put in the RRHF is a 58 JM When they were up here in Portland I saw Fender gave Don a Brand new JM or Jaguar it said The Ventures on it they helped sell a lot of Guitars for Fender just like Dick Dale who is having health Problem's right now Pancreus Cancer to be acxact Lets all wish DD a healthy recovery!
I don't think they owned a 58. 58's are VERY rare since that was the JM's first year. Walk Don't Run was played on Bob's new 60 JM. The one going into the RRHOF is a 61 pictured on The Colorful Ventures.
Don's most played JM was a 68.
Paste this into youtube:
Fender at NAMM 2008: Interview w/ Don Wilson of the Ventures
Thats what Don Wilson mostly Play's is the Jazzmaster he's doing this gig for a promo for Mosrite's I guess! well Look at Nokie he's playing a P Bass not a Mosrite
They started with Jazzmasters then got a Mosrite endorsement around '63. They stopped playing original Mosrites in the late 60s. Don started playing a 68 JM again sometime in the early 80s till 2002 as his main guitar. That guitar is now in the RR hall of fame.
The guitars seen here Mosrite copies, they are: Bob playing a Ventures model Aria, Don playing a Wilson Bros VM75(i think) - Don's company. Nokie has his Hitchhiker guitar - his company.
Nokie0064, Thanks a lot. I have been listening to them for 48 years now...and still picking up their stuff..What a performance? The videos here are great, but still is there a DVD out there?

It was Walk Don't Run and they did another version in 1964. They put a medley together with Perfidia as played here and in person they add Lullaby of the Leaves to it too.
True, they haven't been that active in the USA in quite some time. However, they're still huge in Japan. All told they have something like 50 or 60 albums/CDs out now (probably more). They ought to tour China. Imagine how many CDs they could sell!
China might wind up as big as Japan for them. The trick is then are they physically up for that kind of demand? My guess is they are still in pretty good shape but may have to slow down a little now. Although their past performances wouldn't show it. They are still as good as ever in person.
It just doesn't get any better than this! They were recently inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame! They deserve it. Nokie Edwards - Lead, Don Wilson - Rhythm, Bob Bogle - Bass, Leon Taylor - Drums, son of Mel Taylor who passed away in 1996.
Did the lead guitar player play bass at one time? Also, is the drummer new to the group?
