I have been playing hockey most of my life (39 yo) and my uncle played minor league hockey - so I have been around the rink enough to know that even if this is "legal" to some old man sitting in box watching the game - it was a dirty hit.
The kid had his head down and Phaneuf left his feet and tried to inflict as much damage as he could to a player in a vulnerable position - not classy - especially in an exhibition game.

Phaneuf only cares about making big hits. His actual defensive game is average at best. I think people will have a problem with this hit for a few reasons. a) It's exhibition. b) The other Calgary player knocks Okposo off balance and then Phaneuf comes and leaves his feet for the hit. There was a slow motion replay on TSN and he clearly did leave his feet. It's what you expect out of Phaneuf though

If Okposo wasn't pushed, it wouldn't have been near as bad. And if anyone even cared to watch the video, Dion commited to it before he got pushed and before Okposo was off balance. There was no possible way a human could react to prevent that hit in that situation.
Dion didn't leave his feet. Anyone whos anything about physics what-so-ever knows that the resulting force of two objects colliding goes upwards, because it sure as hell can't go down... the ice is there. Clean hit, bad situation.

A charge is three strides forward. Dion was skating backwards and sideways, never in a forward motion. He only left his feet after contact which was a direct result of the hit itself, not because he jumped in to Okposo.

People are so dumb. Why do some people think Morency deserved the ten game suspension? He would have servered that if he blindsided or pulled a Chris Simon on Phaneuf. But instead, he called him out, dropped the gloves, and defended his teammate. Even though the hit was clean, (and I am an Isles fan), Morency did the right thing. At instant reaction, seeing your teammate get hit like that, you assume it was cheap. I am just upset thata guy who isnt fighting for a spot has to hit some1 like that.

What makes it so big and gives it the appearance of being dirty is the fact that Okposo was knocked off balance by another flame thus inhibiting him from dodging the check and taking it squarely.
Watch it in slow motion people, Phaneuf didn't leave his feet till AFTER contact was made and the puck only left Okposo instantly before the hit so even it Phanuef wanted to stop the hit, there was no time.
Keep in mind, Im a huge oiler fan and hate the flames, so losing Phanuef would serve my team

I have been playing hockey most of my life (39 yo) and my uncle played minor league hockey - so I have been around the rink enough to know that even if this is "legal" to some old man sitting in box watching the game - it was a dirty hit.
The kid had his head down and Phaneuf left his feet and tried to inflict as much damage as he could to a player in a vulnerable position - not classy - especially in an exhibition game.

Phaneuf only cares about making big hits. His actual defensive game is average at best. I think people will have a problem with this hit for a few reasons. a) It's exhibition. b) The other Calgary player knocks Okposo off balance and then Phaneuf comes and leaves his feet for the hit. There was a slow motion replay on TSN and he clearly did leave his feet. It's what you expect out of Phaneuf though
