The reason why Google's making Chrome OS and why it wants its employees to use it is because it sees the browser as the new platform. Why do you think they're building NaCl and Pepper? Why do you think they're partnering with Citrix to be able to run desktop apps remotely. We'll also be able to run GTK 3.2 apps in the browser.
It's not that crazy to say that one will be able to use the browser for most his needs in the near future.
@Mirek002 Not for video editing, it isn't. Have a 200MB file you have to transfer back and forth for example for editing it, I would never ever wait that long foor the video to be transferred each time. Never. And that goes for Music as well. Even in FLAC it can be very much to transfer each time. So if there is ONLY a browser, nope, I will not use it.
Sure the web won't be fit for resource-heavy apps or up/downloading of really large files for a while, but I'm talking about most everyday-user tasks. After all, I'm sure professional audio editors, video editors, animators, etc. don't do their work on a netbook.
And even the resource-heavy stuff is being worked on -- that's why Google's starting the Google Fiber initiative.
@Mirek002 I still have mixed feelings. I am not really hooked on the thought, mostly because of security, I mean privacy. But I think, if it becomes a success, then it will cost Ubuntu Desktop and Canonical the most.
I'd say it will cost Microsoft the most. I mean, when most or all of the applications you use are on the web (including your office suite and your photo editor), you won't care what operating system you're using -- and that should open a lot of people up to Linux operating systems, since they won't be tied to Windows-only software anymore. Plus Chrome OS also means that Chrome on Linux will get more focus.
Wow, gee, if you don't like Chromebooks, don't use them.
I really think you're overestimating the security issue: they have a Chrome feature in the making that will allow you to encrypt all data and they are working with Tor to make it possible to bring Tor mode to Chrome. You'll also be able to jailbrake the computer and install anything you want.
Personally, I like Chromebooks for their hardware, speed, and sync (and since I spend most of my time in a browser anyway).
also, the idea of using plug computers as personal servers seems like it could contribute a lot to keeping control of one's 'cloud' data. see the freedombox foundation. any thoughts?
You said you were counting the days. Perhaps I misunderstood what that meant.
But anyway... you also have to remember that Microsoft had at one point over 90% marketshare in both desktop operating systems, as well as browsers. I don't really see anything close to that in Chrome OS. Besides, both the browser and the OS is open source (or at least will be), and all the "apps" are based on web standards, so there is no real lock-in to speak of.
Didn't Brian chastise Richard Stallman for encouraging people to harass Apple employees over iPhone restrictions? And now he wants someone to sue Google because you can't run native Linux applications on some netbook?
@k99goran Whoah, whoah, whoah there. I don't want anyone to sue anyone. But, considering Microsoft got in trouble for simply making their web browser (IE) the default and unremovable on Windows... The fact that Google is making their browser (Chrome) the -ONLY- browser you can run on their OS... and restricting you from installing other apps as well... that's just not cool.
Plus, the comparison to Stallman's call for people to aggressively disrupt public businesses doesn't even make sense.
With Chrome OS, the browser is the OS -- when you take the browser away, there's nothing left. That's the point.
But Google was adamant about providing a "jailbreak" hardware switch on every Chromebook, so that users can install whatever OS (with whatever browser) they wish.
@BryanLunduke calm down, you just don't like anything that's complete different to your classic 10+yo computer. At first I thought you were just old school, but I'm starting to think you're just trolling.
I stopped watching before half the show because I don't know how can someone stand 1 hour of "a grandpa yelling at his TV".
I think the idea of chromebooks is nice, and it would be nice if google make it possible. But I think it's not for me right now.
Chrome OS is pointless the last version I used I had to access the internet through a proxy I had to fall back to the terminal left in from ubuntu which I think they are taking out
I like my internets and most sites work on adrev so if I want the web to be free and not start pay like cable I will have too watch adds and when google knows I'm looking for a product and shows me ads for it thats ok . aslong they do not use our info for "bad" suff dont realy know what that could be realy I'm fine with nowing that. also they do tell us exactly that they do collect data and mostly there is a option out .
@omeddragon To be fair, Ubuntu has just had a big release that is stinking up the place. Loads of talk about it on the forums. Only seems right there's talk about it here too.
I'd love to see a show or even better, a mini-series about "best hardware for linux" where you review anything from laptops to desktop components and peripherals and give us the most compatible/ best performance hardware for linux.
@jupiterbroadcasting Bryan, one of my pet hates are those facebook apps that require access to all your information, friends, hand over your firstborn. Why do they need all that information? What do they do with that information?
Freshbooks should send you guys a cake. Google are delusional, are they off their meds? Would not touch Chrome OS with a rabid ferret on a 10 foot pole. I am with Bryan, rage on at Google! I got rid of Chrome browser after trying it out, sticking with Firefox and Opera. Do not use Google Docs, or gmail so no great loss there.
