Macs are worthless. Justin Long is a dick, a $600 dollar mac is the equivalent of a $300 netbook, and a $2000 iMac is easily crushed in every single benchmark by a Windows 7 based, $800 PC.

I also like to buy my computer parts and build computers. I am a PC gammer and MAC does not allow me to upgrade to the newest hardware thats out there today and I need boot camp to play any of the new games I want. Linux I just don't know very much about. Windows seems to be a middle ground of the three.
I wont get the BSOD by plugging in an unrecognized device, and windows based computers are JUST as good with EVERYDAY tasks and if you can get a 400$ computer for EVERYDAY tasks such as you listed, why get a 1K$+ mac?

I have windows 7 and have been with windows since 95 so I'm sure im going to stick with it. I have fidled with older MAC's in my school... the ones that look like tube tv's and I don't really care for them. I have not used any form of linux or the newer MAC OSX OS's so I am not going to judge them. However I will also not bother to try them as I am used to windows and if windows works for what I need it to do then why get something else?
It is true, most of the OS (or anything, for that matter) load time is spent accessing files from the HDD. For those who don't know, the inside of a HDD consists of basically small, aluminum records with readers. The drive has to spin up to speed before it can read, and even then, it takes time to read them because they are several (dozen?) times slower than the processor or memory.
Yeah, HDDs are a couple orders of magnitude behind memory.

the hard disk is more like a small book on the book shelf but you can't remember it's name or what it looks like, i say this because you can allocate hard drive space for VRAM
The biggest factors in boot is HDD latency (Windows loads up lots of tiny files so access times are the most important) then it's HDD transfer speeds. This is only true because HDDs usually are the slowest part of a PC: RAM, CPU and northbridge transfers are much faster. This bottleneck will hopefully be lessened with Flash HDD (SSD).
Oh and to anyone who reads what kotorus has said and doesn't want to make an idiot of themselves by claiming they can run vista at 512 mb, i suggest you search "how much RAM does vista use?" in to google, results show that you're best off running vista with over 1.5 gig of RAM, and its extremely slow and sluggish under a gig. In the forums most people are saying it can take 800 or even 900 gigs of RAM just to run vista without any programs (antivirus etc) running at all.
Back when my comp had 512mb of RAM i could run vista at full detail and several background programs (usually Photoshop CS3 and Firefox 2) without any trouble. I could also run most of the games that I own. So if you only intend on running a few programs at a time or 1 game then 512mb is enough RAM for Vista.
And my pc isn't "shit" anymore, it now has 1.5gigs of RAM and a 9800 GTX. I can run Crysis at max specs (no AA) while Vista is at full detail.
Also, if you eliminate all unnecessary background programs and set the detail to minimum then vista doesn't even take up 300mb.
Also (again), if you have a flash drive you can use it as a source of RAM with Vista's Readyboost. It is one of the many very useful features that vista has.
And again you have to limit it to make it work at a reasonable level :|
I'm sorry but vista as an operating system is just horrible, XP was really quite good, and i cant see that any of vistas features are much of an improvement, you wouldn't need to use a flash drive to extend the RAM if it used reasonable amounts anyway.
The fact is if i want to run OSX in full detail without supporting any programs other than finder and dashboard, then it uses 230mb.

And of course its a problem, the more free RAM you have the quicker the computer runs, and boots. if you're running on 1.5 gigs of RAM, then and extra 400 or 500 mb of RAM being used is a third of your physical memory :| Even if you had loads of RAM, lets say 4 gigs, its still 1/8 of your physical memory sat around not contributing to the overall performance of your computer.
It cost me £30 to upgrade my mac by a gig, ($60 roughly) and as i have been saying throughout this conversation, my main issue with vista is the amount of RAM it used, although things like long boot up times and the fact that you ALWAYS need to buy decent antivirus software is just annoying, vista is pretty but alot of that comes from ripping off OSX.
All PCs have long boot times compared to macs, and as a general rule the boot time gets longer the longer you have the computer.
AVG is crap, i had it and i still ended up having to wype my Dell cause the bugger got riddled with viruses. Now i pay for kasparsky just to be safe, i havent had any problems at all with that.
My PC, which is using a single core processor, boots in less than 1 minute.
And AVG is the best antivirus program i have ever used. I have not gotten a virus or any spyware at all since i downloaded it (about a year and a half ago)

My mac takes 20 seconds, my pc averages 1 minute. Laptop is longer. And if thats the case either you've been very lucky with AVG or i was very unlucky.

I guess when you think about it seems like both RAM and Hard Drive speed matter equally. The data is on the hard drive so it has to be fast, and the RAM has to be fast (but not plentiful) to load the data.
Thats not how it works, the processor has the most influence over the speed of each action. The more RAM you have the more tasks the processor can perform at a time. So say with 100 mb of free RAM your pc carries out 50 processes at a time, with 500 mb that might increase to 250 processes at a time. Its not about RAM speed because it doesnt have any, its just memory, its about how much the processor can use at a given time. The RAM limits the processors speed in other words.
RAM is memory. basically it gives space for the processor to work, the more space there is, the more processes it can do at one time. thats how it increases loading speed. no single one of those processes is faster than the processor it self (i.e. a 3 GHZ processor is faster than a 2 GHZ processor)but more free RAM allows for more of these processes to be done at one time at the highest processing power. RAM does not have speed. The processor does.

DDR3 does not necessarily have more memory than DDR2. It is just faster. The only difference between 1Gb of DDR3 and 1Gb of DDR2 is the clock. The clock on the DDR3 stick is usually over 2x the clock of the DDR2 stick.
imagine a Brain has a certain amount of processing power. If you increase the size of the brain, then the power of each process does not increase but there is more room for the brain to process in, which means that more of the same power processes can be carried out at once. if you double the brain size it could go from say 150 processes to 300 of the same processes in the same amount of time. The brains size does not have a speed. but the more of it there is, the more can be done at once.

Plus Mac users use Boot-camp and parallels ... Mean they run Mac OS and Windows both...

It is true, most of the OS (or anything, for that matter) load time is spent accessing files from the HDD. For those who don't know, the inside of a HDD consists of basically small, aluminum records with readers. The drive has to spin up to speed before it can read, and even then, it takes time to read them because they are several (dozen?) times slower than the processor or memory.

Even once you seek to a position on the hard drive, it's slow much slower than RAM.
Virtual RAM is notoriously slow, in fact, most modern systems just use it as emergency backup or for suspend-to-disk.
It's definitely way further away than the book shelf.

The biggest factors in boot is HDD latency (Windows loads up lots of tiny files so access times are the most important) then it's HDD transfer speeds. This is only true because HDDs usually are the slowest part of a PC: RAM, CPU and northbridge transfers are much faster. This bottleneck will hopefully be lessened with Flash HDD (SSD).

PC users - stick with XP for as long as possible :)

Oh and to anyone who reads what kotorus has said and doesn't want to make an idiot of themselves by claiming they can run vista at 512 mb, i suggest you search "how much RAM does vista use?" in to google, results show that you're best off running vista with over 1.5 gig of RAM, and its extremely slow and sluggish under a gig. In the forums most people are saying it can take 800 or even 900 gigs of RAM just to run vista without any programs (antivirus etc) running at all.

Back when my comp had 512mb of RAM i could run vista at full detail and several background programs (usually Photoshop CS3 and Firefox 2) without any trouble. I could also run most of the games that I own. So if you only intend on running a few programs at a time or 1 game then 512mb is enough RAM for Vista.
And my pc isn't "shit" anymore, it now has 1.5gigs of RAM and a 9800 GTX. I can run Crysis at max specs (no AA) while Vista is at full detail.

Also, if you eliminate all unnecessary background programs and set the detail to minimum then vista doesn't even take up 300mb.
Also (again), if you have a flash drive you can use it as a source of RAM with Vista's Readyboost. It is one of the many very useful features that vista has.

I'm sorry but vista as an operating system is just horrible, XP was really quite good, and i cant see that any of vistas features are much of an improvement, you wouldn't need to use a flash drive to extend the RAM if it used reasonable amounts anyway.
The fact is if i want to run OSX in full detail without supporting any programs other than finder and dashboard, then it uses 230mb.
The same on my vista is 750.

And of course its a problem, the more free RAM you have the quicker the computer runs, and boots. if you're running on 1.5 gigs of RAM, then and extra 400 or 500 mb of RAM being used is a third of your physical memory :| Even if you had loads of RAM, lets say 4 gigs, its still 1/8 of your physical memory sat around not contributing to the overall performance of your computer.

It cost me £30 to upgrade my mac by a gig, ($60 roughly) and as i have been saying throughout this conversation, my main issue with vista is the amount of RAM it used, although things like long boot up times and the fact that you ALWAYS need to buy decent antivirus software is just annoying, vista is pretty but alot of that comes from ripping off OSX.

You don't need to buy an antivirus program, just download (for free) AVG, it can do everything.
So the only valid point you made was that it takes more ram to run vista than osx. Considering how cheap RAM is i don't think that is a problem...

All PCs have long boot times compared to macs, and as a general rule the boot time gets longer the longer you have the computer.
AVG is crap, i had it and i still ended up having to wype my Dell cause the bugger got riddled with viruses. Now i pay for kasparsky just to be safe, i havent had any problems at all with that.

My PC, which is using a single core processor, boots in less than 1 minute.
And AVG is the best antivirus program i have ever used. I have not gotten a virus or any spyware at all since i downloaded it (about a year and a half ago)

Actually im finding lots of forums saying that RAM is the biggest factor in boot speed, to be honest i dont see how hard drive has much to do with it, other than it contains the startup programs.
And its three times slower than it could be. And the time all adds up, and i guess i do think its bad because im used to it quicker.
And he point still stands that the more free physical memory your computer has, the faster it runs.

I guess when you think about it seems like both RAM and Hard Drive speed matter equally. The data is on the hard drive so it has to be fast, and the RAM has to be fast (but not plentiful) to load the data.

Thats not how it works, the processor has the most influence over the speed of each action. The more RAM you have the more tasks the processor can perform at a time. So say with 100 mb of free RAM your pc carries out 50 processes at a time, with 500 mb that might increase to 250 processes at a time. Its not about RAM speed because it doesnt have any, its just memory, its about how much the processor can use at a given time. The RAM limits the processors speed in other words.

RAM is memory. basically it gives space for the processor to work, the more space there is, the more processes it can do at one time. thats how it increases loading speed. no single one of those processes is faster than the processor it self (i.e. a 3 GHZ processor is faster than a 2 GHZ processor)but more free RAM allows for more of these processes to be done at one time at the highest processing power. RAM does not have speed. The processor does.

DDR3 does not necessarily have more memory than DDR2. It is just faster. The only difference between 1Gb of DDR3 and 1Gb of DDR2 is the clock. The clock on the DDR3 stick is usually over 2x the clock of the DDR2 stick.

imagine a Brain has a certain amount of processing power. If you increase the size of the brain, then the power of each process does not increase but there is more room for the brain to process in, which means that more of the same power processes can be carried out at once. if you double the brain size it could go from say 150 processes to 300 of the same processes in the same amount of time. The brains size does not have a speed. but the more of it there is, the more can be done at once.
