Fantastic score by Mr. Bernstein. On PBS in the 80's there was a version I like best, from New York city which I like better than the current version on dvd. It is rumored that he was working on another version when he passed on. Thank you Mr. Bernstein for i watched you on TV on Saturdays when I was a child and you taught me to appreciate the orchestra (I ended up learning harp but never achieved orchestra level of playing). Had a Salvi harp, the best, but do not have one now. thanks doug

Haha, I LOVE this piece. Our wind ensemble performed this when I was in high school. I was on the piccolo and had a blast - all the instruments were just kind of thrown in a blender for this composition and it works perfectly. Such a great performance piece =] "Peas and carrrrrrots!"
what level is this? highschool or college? :) I LOVE it and want to reccomend it to my junior high director (We play highschool level) <---top band filled with brilliant 8th gr. ahaha
@pipnchip Honestly I'm not sure, but I played this in high school. It was the top band, so it is probably the highest level. Definitely worth a shot. It's great to play!
@pipnchip hey! Our high school just did this. Some things you should know, You need a mind blowingly good oboist. It's not a "hard" part technically, but it needs to sound professional and perfectly in tune. I've never heard a middle school oboist pull that off. . Secondly, it's hard to sound like Berstein. I'm not sure that a middle school (Even a good one) could pull it off... But you could always try.
Bernstein should have stuck with this tempo for the LSO, but he probably did not because that was a live performance as opposed to the studio recording this was.
A far superior recording than with the LSO. Why did Bernstein alter the tempo with the london orchestra?? This is so much better and the accoustics are in a different league. You would not believe it is the same conductor for both pieces.
@icgriffin It's so funny that you said that. I just listened to the London recording and thought it was a little dull. So I wanted to hear the New York version. TOTALLY different! But this one is almost reckless. I'd like a version that was rambunctious.....yet steady.....(Is that possible?) This one takes off like a rocket, and never comes back.
SOOOO RUSSSHED AT THE END!!!

does this even have anything to do with Voltaires Candide?
clarinetchum 1 year ago
@clarinetchum Yes, it is based on the story, but to what degree I'm not sure. I'm not that familiar with the operetta.

@clarinetchum
Yes, its the overture to the opera based around Candide. It is a wonderful musical setting that really sets up the events for the rest of the opera
nmitchell076 10 months ago
Start your day with this overture, and the sun will shine all day long! What a great energetic piece of music!!!

@icgriffin Agreed. I originally didn't know who the conductor was, and was shocked to find out it WAS Bernstein!
