  • I purchased a desk lamp in 2003. It looks as new and it's still working perfectly fine except the switch is a bit loose so I decorate it with a big paper clip on the switch. So many times I thought of buying a new lamp, but I'm not sure what to do with the existing one. Chucking away a functional item seems like a bit of a waste, and I'd feel guilty.

    Dear Lamp, please break soon.

  • 4chan were are the lamps?

  • poor lamp

  • This is a perfect example of why I don't just leave my old lamps by the side of the road. Instead, I bludgeon them into pieces so ensure it wont experience sadness. I destroy because I care.

  • I'm gonna say this now. Don't watch past 0:45. Just don't.

  • Lamp!!! T__T!!!

  • aw poor lamp ಥ_ಥ

  • I think the maker of this video was watching "the brave little toaster" be before he made this.

  • lamp...i love lamp :(

  • there was a webcomic identical to this, but it was about the original gameboy advance and the newer gameboy advance sp

  • @sheatheman Vgcats and it parodied this.

  • @whattwowhat thanks! smart guy.

  • Pobre lampara... snif snif...

  • IKEA is unböring

  • What a waste of good appliances. At least send it to Goodwill instead of making our dumps ever larger.

  • best ad ever!

  • I love... Lamp... I love Lamp!

  • I love this commercial so much, but shit's fucked up.

  • LMAO I love this commercial! I remember the first time I saw it, I really *did* feel sorry for the lamp!

  • its just so sad. who could do that to a lamp. how would they feel if someone did that for them. its so sad I'm crying. so so so so so sad. i hate that women now for doing that to the poor lamp.

  • That is MESSED UP!!!

  • story of my life

  • it's a simple matter of our psychology that makes us feel sorry for the lamp. in literature we refer to this sort of thing as "personification." we as humans have a tendency to apply human attributes to non human creatures and inanimate objects. even though the lamp has no feelings, when it is put in a situation we can relate to and suddenly we feel the way we would in said situation and apply the feelings to the inanimate object.

  • Did I really just jerk off to this?

  • It's just a lamp guys. It has no feelings. It's going to go in a trash compactor and be squished into a little cube of garbage and thrown in a landfill. Fact of life.

  • aww

  • this is incredible

  • IF IT HAS NO FEELINGS THEN WHATS UP WITH THE DEPRESSING MUSIC??? Crazy Swedes. THT MEANS IM CRAZY!!!! Hehe...

  • Ryan Higa liked this video.... :)

  • People, the point of the commercial wasn't to sell the new lamp, it was to introduce americans to Ikea (this was 2002), so yeah, pretty god damned successful isn't it? Plus you all love/hate this commercial enough to go look it up on youtube right?

  • U CRAZY.

  • I love lamp.

  • @unlessitsafarm

    haha, ty

  • I love this commercial to death. At first you feel so sad for the lamp then the guy tells you you're crazy and I end up half laughing half crying.

  • I feel sad for the lamp ;_;

  • If you're a bit older, you'd blame The Brave Little Toaster.

  • @Loveydvy99 Remembering The Brave Little Toaster is a sign of being older?

    ...I need a drink...

  • @darkfire532 My comment was in response to someone saying they blamed Pixar. I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that the person who wrote that comment didn't see Pixar's "Luxo Jr." short film until it was re-released in 1999 (it was originally made in 1986 but wouldn't have been seen in theaters until it was attached to Toy Story 2). Soooo if you saw BLT in the 80's, you're about a decade-ish older than the kids who saw Pixar's lamp in theaters for the first time. Not too bad!

  • old lamp looks way cool and I now have even less desire to purchase anything from ikea. Good job marketing department.

  • cool stuff but we do it better

  • I love lamp.

  • unböring

  • I love lamp.

  • you cazy (lol)

  • The old lamp was much better than the new, chinese-made, faggot-looking one.

  • @ClementRedneck .....It's Swedish.

  • @B4K4xNi ikea is swedish, the crap it sells is made in china.

  • Just think...that poor little lamp is all on its own in the cold, with no company. Lamp deserves love. :(

  • ha!

  • Why in the hell is she throwing away perfectly good lamp??? If I had passed it sitting there, I would've picked that shit up off the ground and took it home. Shoot! As broke as folks are now and days.

  • you ain't got no pancake mix!!

  • Ikea is perpetrating a culture where people find it necessary to throw away things even when they work perfectly fine. "Lamp" has functions beyond the ones inherited from it's owner and his very design reflects some responsibility towards cultural sustainability. I love you, Lamp.

  • The ending was hilarious.

  • まさか君はこの赤いランプを "かわいそう" だと思ってるんじゃないだろうな?

    だとしたらどうかしてるよ。

    だってランプに感情なんてあるわけないじゃないか。

    新しいほうがいいに決まってるさ。

  • @wuser9990 ... what?

  • respect to everything around you.

  • well... the lamp has feelings .

human just think they are the best can control everything

  • This commercial made me keep my good 'ol red lamp.

He's still tickin to this day.

  • Poor lamp

  • Did you ever hesitate to throw away an old toy as a child?

I would always picture the bright, colored plastic - which had been so carefully designed and purchased for me - chipping away and fading in a landfill, as it was covered in mounds of old rotting food and trash.

No matter how rarely I played with the toy, I felt a duty to protect it from that fate by not throwing it away.

Perhaps children have a better understanding of the evils of consumerism than their older, and "wiser", parents..?

  • @halfeatenface No, this is Pathetic Fallacy.

  • screw you that man at the end DONT TELL ME HOW TO FEEL!

  • 1000000000000000x wayyyyyyy easier than going back to the hell hole called IKEA and returning it.

  • fuck you pixar

  • lamp.

  • I don't think I'm going to ever throw out anything ever again. ;w; baaawwww

  • i felt sad actually couldn't help it... D:

  • I feel bad for the lamp.

    I'M CRAZZYYY!!! D:

  • My Face --> : (

  • I felt sorry for the lamp :'(

  • I didn't see the humour in this add; if anything it's shown me the light. I'm never buying 1st hand goods again.

  • I fkn hate swedes.

  • Waaaa!!

How is this helping to sell lamps? Just makes me want to hang on to my old junk so it won't be out shivering in the cold, cold rain.

  • Yeps, the old one was, probably, also made in a sweatshop in a third world country, for the profit of only a small group of people. Ikea is much better than a local workshop, and we are all crazy..

  • this reminds me of that arm lamp in that old movie "the brave little toaster"

  • wat ?

  • LMFAO!!!!

  • abandonement issues....will they ever go away?

  • @Epsilonic. What a cunt.

  • that ending.

    ARGH

  • So this is where VG Cats got the Gameboy Advance being thrown away and replaced with Gameboy Advance SP thing

  • ::snif:: I'll take the poor lamp.

  • i did not expect that ending.

  • Haha, we're giving a bigger shit about that old lamp than the lamp itself is.

  • But what about all those times that Lamp kept me safe from the shadows!? All those times i woke up in a cold sweat from a nightmare to turn on Lamp and feel the comfort of his warm light!? You think I give a damn that I'm crazy for loving lamp? Well guess what, your crazy if you DON'T have feeling you heartless bastard.

  • @feinecro You crazy!

  • I only feel sad, because of Brave Little Toaster.

  • I could hardly even see the new lamp!!!1111

  • I love, lamp!

  • The lamp itself has no feeling, but we have feelings attached to the lamp and its history.

  • Thanks 4 calling ur customers crazy

  • In some courses in Italian universities this is now shown as a example of brilliantly done communication that ultimately backfires (i.e. does not promote the message it intended to do). The guy voice is annoying, his tone is self-righteous and everyone ends up sympathizing for the lamp!

  • I am crazy, I felt sorry for this lamp...

  • poor lamp!

  • The whole idea of IKEA is to always go for the new. Our American culture is very attached to our furniture and when we buy things we buy them for long periods of time. We make investments and can spend thousands of dollars on things we plan on passing down to our kids. IKEA's model is to build furniture that won't last a long time because their philosophy is that we shouldn't get attached to one look or piece of furniture.

  • Hibernate in peace, Spirit.

  • hahahah, awesome advert

  • I laughed at the end. :D

It's not entirely illogical to form attachments to objects, I think, if the objects are associated with memories or feelings. That makes them part of our cognition, and so part of our being.

Though, of course, we shouldn't anthropomorphize too far. And I'm always receptive to better tools, myself.

  • YOU SET ME UP D`:

  • I feel sad now......

    That guy is a dick.

  • hahahaha... brilliant...

  • I blame Pixar

  • freaking genius

  • "Many of you feel bad for this lamp. That's because you're crazy! It has no feelings! Now, the new one is much better."

  • what did he say? can anyone type it out? having had time to understand...

  • DANES ROCK! super sej marmeladegris in ur face!

  • hillarious

  • I DID felt bad for the lamp xD

  • lol i felt so bad for the lamp!! best add ever

  • Its a lamp!

  • @stevan4ever

You are aware that IKEA isnt german its Swedish. So to continue on this course of language and thought.

You should deliver your GED back to the school you got it from you undereducated fart!

  • I can see that the danish schoolsystem once again has failed in raising the standard. Then again what how much intelligence can a 15 year old show. It is easy to hide behind a monitor on the internet and call people gay.

But interesting enough its most likely thos that call people gay who themself are gay.....

  • maybe I should explain what I mean't whith my furst commend. I knew that it was a swedish comercial, I MEN'T THAT GUY WHO WHERE SAYING THAT. HE'S GERMAN. don't ask me how I am that sure, I'm not but my friend says otherweis.

If you see that video again and ACTUALLY feel sorry for the lamp as I did you will notice that he call'd you crazy. that's what I mean't whith all that.

if your german then I'm sorry for calling you a nazi.

  • I have another question. how do you know that I'm a 15 year old dan. haw you bin looking at my account or Mail (and I don't mean hacking in to them, but just looking).

Have you becaus if you have you should notice that your getting a little bit anxious about this...

  • so, what if he is? Why say that with such an accusatory tone, bigot?

  • ikea is swedish

  • This isn't even original: it's completely ripped off the old Disney cartoon movie "The Little Toaster" from the 1980s.

  • Fuck yo little toaster son. Spike Jonze's the shit.

  • Well, it's still a f-lamp. I mean how much better can it be? The problem of our civiization is that we consume far too much for no good reason.

  • truer words have never been spoken.

  • Exactly. The message of this is - consume, consume and again consume, no matter what. Replace the old with the new just because is "new" - otherwise you're crazy and uncool.

  • That also sort of rhymed :D

  • love stinks

  • The power of film made me cry over a lamp. Wow.

  • omg.. did he just PWN me? O_o

  • Uberpwnt, I think it is.

  • Ikea wants us to buy new things without emotion. The less love we have for our surrounding the easier and often we change it and therefore we buy more. That is the principle that makes our consumption orientated world so deeply ill.

Only the ability of compassion for every beeing and every thing can make a human society endurable. But this commercial negates this great human capability. It proofes the decadence and perversion of Ikea and the advertising agencies.

  • Dude, it's a lamp. You want me to have compassion for a lamp? Compassion for every being (beeing, lol. Like bee? As in to bee someone?) does not include lifeless masses metal and wiring.

  • @raumspirale Excellent analysis!

  • Compassion for inanimate objects could lead to people ignoring better models that have been designed to advance civilisation. To be better than it's predecessor.

In terms of this lamp, the older version may not have been throw out by many people due to a formation of an attachment with it. This could lead to less efficient products being used as we make our decisions based on emotions rather than logic.

  • One of the more - and very rare- intelligent reponses on YouTube. I agree to your point about humans creating emotional attachment to inanimate objects, but I politely disagree on that being a force that may hinder future development or acceptance of other options. It merely means we like to 'keep or 'store' our old possessions rather than simply throwing them out. That is what makes us human, and I like that feature about us.

  • You are actually also making your decisions based on emotion, or at least bias.

Why do you think that having "better" models of consumer electronics has anything to do with advancing what you call civilization?

    Old lamp looked more robust.

  • If what you said was true, we don't we raze Florence or Venice to the groud to replace them with some high tech metal and plastic mass housing development? They're much more "efficient" products than XV century palaces...

Human don't work that way - thank heaven we're not machines!

  • I am, and I am glad about it.

  • uh yeah thanks buddy im totaly taking credit for his joke, lol geeez moron

  • consume more bitches

  • hes just mad because he died at the end of die hard....

  • You better write a letter thanking Adam Sandler for your joke.

  • And you better write an apology to Judd Apatow for crediting jokes he wrote to Adam Sandler. Only an idiot would think that just because someone delivered a line in a movie means they wrote it.

  • When you've got a good lamp that's gonna treat you right but ikea offers you a better light. Right away you start to swoon because they offer you the moon. Tell me, is light worth more than love and affection? Don't be steered in the wrong direction cause a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

  • Did you not see its red head? It is clearly a ginger.

  • you're retarded

  • no you

  • PRICK! THE LAMP DO HAS FEELINGS!

  • This is such a rude video. I'm never shopping at Ikea again. CHILDREN CAN ACCESS THIS VIDEO. WOULD SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

  • i love lamp

  • @rhettnyedotorg I love girls

  • the man at the end killed it for me.. great score

  • awsome .... i love it

  • That was a perfectly good lamp, left out in the rain! How wasteful! Mindless consumerism run amok.

Fuck Ikea and its deforestation of Siberia and east Asia and its exploitation of cheap labor!

  • omg!! :D This is good! :)

  • This video is the greatest!

  • i am crazy and feel sorry for that lamp. fuck you and wont get the new one. motherfucker.

  • man something I feel like that lamp

  • Jejeje! buenisimo :D

  • Love this commercial!

  • wow.....ok.....-_-

  • Ya know- this ad still moves me, even after all these years

  • One of my old favourites.

  • Comment removed

  • This commercial just made me feel incredibly stupid!

  • i prefer the old lamp.
