THANK YOU, SecureFreedom, for posting Rep. Franks' calm and articulate representation of this vital, national security issue. We could-have-been/should-have-been shielding our grid's generating and transforming infrastructure YEARS ago but thank Heaven, we have people such as Rep. Franks working on this at least NOW (better late than too late). HR668 is worth supporting by all of us and WITH our support, we could make an EMP event a NON-event (like Y2K).
Logic dictates that no country will commit national suicide to simply turn out the lights (EMP attack). Any EMP strike would most likely be the first phase of an all out attack. You don't hit a tiger in the head and then sit back and wait for a response.
@rstora01 However logic does not dictate that such an attack necessarily comes via the hand of a 'country' much less one that is concerned with avoiding 'national suicide'. Islamic fanatics, do not in my estimation, care much about collateral damage or have any national interests that they hold in high enough regard to dissuade them from attempting such an act. Additionally, a decisive American response by the current administration, is highly unlikely. Lack of Preparedness is not excusable.
@tungstencarbide100 One cannot purchase an EMP device off the shelf. No terrorist group is going to build a weapon like this in their garage, it is highly technical and complex, also one must consider the matter of the delivery system. I think your mistaken the current leadership would not respond. They're ready to commit US forces in oil rich Libya over some bullshit premise of humanitarian slaughter while ignoring an actual slaughter in Syria.
@rstora01 The fact that you would find it difficult to purchase an EMP from your local hardware store is irrelevant. The desire of such groups to obtain such a weapon is. Whether acquired through theft or clandestine agreement with any entity capable of producing said weapon, the use by fanatics would be a foregone conclusion. And you don't need an ICBM to deliver it. Furthermore, even if the dithering fool in the white house had the intestinal fortitude to act in retaliation, (which I doubt),
@rstora01 who would you attack? Even after the nuclear signature was in, would you turn N. Korea into a glass factory, if you were not convinced of their complicity for example?.
@tungstencarbide100 The original premise of this video was that The US is vulnerable to an EMP attack from whoever, and that we needed to prepare for that unlikely (or likely) event. I don't accept the argument that such a single directed attack would happen. That is half ass attack thinking. My best guess is it would happen like this: First, the power would go out (EMP) then all hell would break loose (total nuclear commitment).
The premise of the video is the need for grid shielding. The 'ancillary effects' of total grid failure could cause 60% casualty in the U.S. population. Whether by EMP or geomagnetic storm.
YOU MISSED the point of the video, then accused me of it.
Then, out of hand, you dismiss the argument, both of the threat & the results, made by Trent Franks, EMP Commission, NASA, DoD, & Center for security policy.

@rstora01 Unless the President of the country you're striking is Barack Hussein Obama.
