bossys career totals are inflated because he went out to injury @ end of his prime mike bossy was a great great player but...
bossys first 10 years
752 573 553 1126 .76 goals per game and 1.5 points per game
gretzkys first 10 years
774 637 1200 1837 2.37 points per game .82 goals per game..if gretzky got injured at year 10 bossys numbers would be destroyed similar results when comparing too lemieux..bossys 17 goal three peat in the playoffs is simply amazing tho and will never be touched
There's never been a more consistent and better sniper than this guy. Lafleur may have been better play maker but even that's debatable. Lafleur was more dynamic, more flamboyant, but Bossy's career-high in assists is 84, and Lafleu never had that many, nor did he ever have as many as 147 points. Bossy was such a smart passer. Nothing out of the ordinary or that would catch your eye, but it's definitely an underrated part of his game. An absolute pleasure to watch.
in addition denis maruk scored a few goals less and a few points less than bossy that year in that great east. Trottier scored 50 goals and had a huge season and 4 of the top 5 scorers were in the east.
Tough to compare Bossy to Gretzky goal scoring wise, as they played on two different style teams. Who knows how Bossy would have fared playing for the Oilers, durinig his career. Probably alot more goals during THAT time at least. It was such a great priviledge watching each, along with the other greats of that time. Such a special time.
Mike bossy was very good but all the people that talk about the pace he was on are kind of funny. It's called prime people, also known as peak years. Those who think he would score 60 goals til he was 40 are crazy. Plus the 50 goals per year is a convenient cutoff. When you compare the 9 fist seasons of Gretzky to bossy Gretzky restored his goals per game, look it up, bossy was scoring 50 and 60 while Gretzky strung together 4 consecutive years of 71 or more, including 87 and 92 goal years.
@leafyutube ...I wont dispute that but from 81-82 - 84-85 4- seasons gretzky averaged over a goal per game 1.02 goals/game for 4 years straight...while bossy averaged .77 goals per game during that same period..and gretzkys 87 goal not his 92 goal season was his best and would was on pace for 103 goals but missed 6 games with a shoulder injury.
@triplerdad look at the teams gretzky played against, only 1 team was over .500 in that conference., where our conference had about 7 in 82. that conference was terrible. bossy would of got 90, 100, or more
@triplerdad if bossy played in that weak, weak, weak conference, he would of scored 100 goals. bossy played in a much tougher, physical, defensive conference where gretzky feasted on winnegeg, calgary, vancouver, and so on. also bossy is the only player that scored 17 goals 3 years in a row in the playoffs, where it counts, while gretzky only netted 12, 13 and 16. bossy is the greatest goal scorer in the history of hockey, where he avereaged more goals per game than anyone
Man, I miss watching Bossy play. I'm so lucky I grew up 20 minutes from the Coliseum. When Bossy got the puck, no matter where he was on the ice, everyone stood up and when his stick rose to take a shot you could hear a pin drop.
Mike Bossy played 10 seasons in the NHL and retired 3 months after he turned 30 because of chronic back problems. Had Bossy played until he was 35 or 36 ( and maintained his 57.3 goals per year avg. ), he would have ended his career as either the #1 or #2 career goal scorer. Even to this day, the majority of hockey journalists and the hockey media continue to ignore or downplay the accomplishments of Mike Bossy.
Bossy was a supremely gifted shooter. This was on Pete Peeters, the Hart trophy runner-up and Vezina winner of 82-83. Peeters ran out of steam against the Isles though. Got lit up in the 3 games at Nassau Coliseum, with the Isles outscoring them by a 23-11 margin and Bossy recording 8 goals including two hatties (3g and 4g efforts). And Boston had the league's 2nd best record that year. Yet it was still somehow a shock when the isles beat the Oilers? Sure the sweep was, but not the win itself
Very good point. People were expecting a defensive series here but the Islanders scored a ton of goals. And you're right. Beating the Oilers was not surprising, though the sweep was.
It was a good shot by a goal scorer who could shoot is as accurately as anyone who ever played. Don't let the distance fool you. I'm not saying it was a goal Peeters couldn't have stopped, but you have to give credit to a sniper like Bossy. Great goal scorers like Bossy, Lemieux, Hull, Neely, Lafleur and others OFTEN scored goals from this far out. It's all about technique. Today's goalies are not that much better, they just have larger equipment.
Look at 0:41, that puck went through Peters. Peters opened up his stance, Boss knew he would ahead of time, and scored in that small opening. That's why Boss was the Boss, he knew where the goalie WOULD BE, and didn't care where he was.
The replay at 24 seconds leads me to think it simply went long side and not through the space between his body and blocker. I say this because the puck hits in the net pretty close to the post and I don't think it could've veered that quickly towards the far post after it went between his blocker and body. But I could be wrong.
I think that puck went THROUGH Peters. Peters lifts his blocker up slightly, and the puck went through the space between his body and blocker. Can anyone confirm that?
I just watched a clip of Lafleur scoring a similar goal in the 78 Finals vs. Boston. They were both elite snipers, the best of their era, & although Bossy couldn't skate as well as Guy & perhaps wasn't as flashy, I'll take Bossy over Lafleur. He was as good a playmaker, a better defensive player & had a quicker release. The stats also don't lie. Lafleur never got as many as 147 points, or 69 goals, or 84 assists in a year. Bossy did all those things. Best right winger ever is Mike Bossy.
@leafyutube yes, but 1st in goals per game, ahead of gretzky and lemieux, oh and look up playoff goals, bossy is the only player with 17 three years in a row
@dzanier Still Bossy was never the best player in the game, yet when Lafleur was on top, he was the greatest player in the game. Also while Bossy was physical and so forth, Lafleur's enormous skills would have him score in many different ways while Bossy scored one way and one way only a la Brett Hull.
@skinwalkerxxx I won't deny, that Lafleur was a superior hockey player, in his prime. Only Bobby Orr was better, during the 70's. Mike Bossy, however, was not a "one trick pony!" Not even close to it.
Agreed. That guy (skinwalkerxxx ) loses credibility when he says Bossy scored "one way only". Total baloney. Few players in NHL history scored prettier goals in different ways than Bossy. That guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
@leafyutube Amen to that! Just look at the goal Bossy scored, in the Finals against Vancouver, when he was virtually airborne! Lafleur was a terrific goal scorer. But, he was no Bossy, in that department!
Notice that it's almost always 20 year old idiots who make claims about players before their time? Almost always. I say it all the time, today's youth is arrogant! They know nothing, but they think they're experts. How the fuck can a 20 year old possibly be an expert on Bossy and Lafleur? Absolutely fascinating arrogance.
Bossy's career +/- was +381. Yes, he was on the ice with Trottier, Potvin, Bourne, Gillies, etc., but he was no defensive liability.
In this goal, the puck passes between Brodeur's blocking glove and his body. Another example of Bossy shooting AT the goalie, knowing that his shot would be centered on net, and that the goalie would probably move in some way that would open a path for the puck to enter the net.
I cannot think of a player who scored more goals like this, that is coming down the wing and just blowing by the goalie, than Bossy. Lafleur was good at it but Bossy was number 1.
I agree with your comment about everything accept your philosophy about shooting at the goalie. Pete Peeters was no slouch. If you look, as leadimprov said, at 0:05, Peeters has him played perfectly. Bossy put it in about the only place he could have scored.
it is funny how peeter's leg goes up well after the pucks in the net. i remember that happening a lot to goalies when bossy shoots. i also remember hearing jigs saying trottier to bossy, score.
yes you are right, but Bossy scored 17 goals, 3 years in a row in the playoffs and knowone has ever done that. the great one and lemieux never did that.
You don't have to convince me, I'm the biggest Bossy fan there is. The above goal is just awesome too, talk about a goal scorer's goal. Had his back not given out, he'd be #1 in goals all-time.
i agree about his back, those f---ing goons ruined him. he may be the best goals per game scorer. i am a big bossy fan also. it was a pleasure watching him, but i have to say trottier was a big part of bossy's success. those were the days.
14 teams passed on Bossy. In retrospect that's utterly astonishing. Several teams felt he would not score as much in the NHL & that he would be a defensive liability. Not only did he routinely score as many as 69 goals in a season, HE WAS NOT a defensive liability. The Isles needed a natural sniper. They were good but their's was a more defensive-minded team prior to Boss's arrival. Bossy's the kind of commodity that is simply priceless. Look at Ovechkin in Washington. They are game-changers
The only player I've seen score as smoothly as the Boss did is Joe Sakic. Joe could shoot at a goalie's pads and the puck would mysteriously go in. Bossy was just like that.
The butterfly is a bullshit myth. The enormous equipment was the main difference. Many goalies were playing the butterfly back then, but scoring was surging. But as soon as they started increasing the goalie equipment gradually around the early 90's, scoring started to go down.
Anyway, Bossy would have blown that shot by any goalie today. He had a canon.
yet i bet you're ok with giving gretzky credit as the greatest ever while playing in the same era?......bossy is arguably the greatest nhl sniper ever.
Mike Bossy drafted number 15. WHAT A FUCKING STEAL!!!
If his back stayed healthy he could have scored 800 goals. He has scored 573 in 700 plus games. he fell into Bill Torrey's lap. Drafted low because he was soft on defense..yea the 80 to 83 Islanders knew how to play defense and Bossy, Trottier, Tonelli, Bourne, Goring, Merrick, Sutter all knew how to how to play defense and offense just ask any NHL player from those 4 years.
Just think stupid fucktard Harold Ballard turn him down twice in the 1977 Draft. Think where Maple Leafs would be had they not traded Bernie Parent away and Drafted Mike Bossy in the 1970's.
Best Sniper EVER! If only his back could have made it longer. 700 goals were only 127 away. Just a tad over two seasons work. Gretzky got all the headlines, but that's ok. We know how great Mike Bossy was.
I think only a guy like Bossy could score from 30-35 feet like and fans would say that it was not a bad goal given up by the goalie. Bossy had an ability to be accurate from long distances that was unbelievable. And his shot was hard.
