  • Hello, have you tested or hear about af accuracy of 28-70 2.8 afs. I thing to go for 28-70, because its about 30% cheeper now(to 24-70) and Im sure, the 4mm is not a problem. The only thing Im worried is af accuracy in lower light, like cloudy day room etc. Thank you for answer. AG

  • @raugelis it has f/2.8 aperture, which is big enough to allow light to enter the lens for your camera's af sensors to pick up something to focus on in dark conditions. i dont know what camera you have, old cameras probably will do a sluggish job compared to newer cameras due to improved technology in af sensors.

  • Yes, your D5000 can take heavy lenses. Just pick it up by the lens, not camera.

  • Uhm, "better picture" with a FX lens? No, dear, it doesn't matter what sensor size your camera has. The 17-55mm is a quality lens, so, the pictures are already better.

  • what do you think if 17-55 mm vs 24-70 mm with Nikon D90 body..?

  • Unfortunately, that's not our decision because it's yours. Perhaps rent them out to see and decide for yourself.

  • what do you think about the 35-70mm f/2.8d lens? o:

  • Nikon 35-70mm ƒ/2.8D AF is an old school commercial grade lens. You can find an used one for 1/3 the price of a new 24-70mm. Do we need to say more? :)

  • does this len come with a hood ?

  • Yup.

  • Hi,

What I would be interested in is if this lens suffers from lens breathing, since while zooming, the front end pulls out of the gasket.

I am assembling a system and threw out any lens that pulled air into itself.

So what I am interested in is: Am I going to see dust inside this lens after a couple of months / years?

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • All IF (Internal Focusing) prime and zoom lenses suffers from focus breathing but hardly noticeable. IF Micro-Nikkor (macro) lenses have the worst case. The 24-70mm is sealed against dust and moisture. Most likely you won't get any dust inside the lens unless one of the sealants is damaged.

  • i sold my 2 lenses 17-50 tamron and nikkor 85mm 1.8 for 600 can$.just to have this lens and i just bought 2 days ago and i havent tried it yet.

  • i didnt buy this lens just rented and compered it with other lenses , also i used this lens for about one week which i borrowed from a friend, so this is my opinion canon need to listen own clients but looks like market is the most important

  • Well, yeah, that is why Canon is not doing too well in this economy.

  • Im a canon user and i have few L lenses but the 24-70 is one of the most important zooms , all i can say is that im just jealous watching nikon lens 24-70 witch is really amazing ! shame on canon that there is no upgrade from old 24-70 2.8 usm which is really crap comparing to nikon zoom

  • If it is crappy, then why did you buy it?

  • Holy crap that's expensive :|

  • @unknownchronicles Every good lens is expensive, but you pay what you get. More you spent, better you get (often this is true)

  • i recently bought one kiwi! hoping to see how it goes. i bet you use this lens a lot yes?

  • Yep, it is our favorite Nikon brand zoom lens.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Hey, I'm a fan of your channel and have learnt a lot from it. Btw, I've got a question: I understand that this lens does not come with VR. Does this mean it is not good enough for sports shoots?

    God Bless,

    J

  • Hah, funny comment. No, VR doesn't freeze action. VR only helps with non-moving subjects at slow shutter speeds.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 omg... I've been fed rubbish all this while. I've been told that VR reduces blur/motion from my shots...

  • VR does reduce blurriness at slow shutter speeds only if your subject isn't moving. It doesn't magically freeze everything like pressing the pause button. In order to freeze fast moving subjects (cars, sports, etc.), simply use shutter speeds that are faster than 1/125s.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 So am I correct to say that VR is not a factor to consider when buying lens for photography that involves alot of motion/movements? If so, I can consider buying the Nikkor 24-70mm ƒ/2.8G...

  • That is correct.

  • I know you`ll say I should rent a lens before buying, and that you cant recommend a particular lens, but I was considering buying this lens instead of primes covering the equivalent focal lengths. What do you think, Lilkiwiguy87?

  • If you are willing to accept the fact that the 24-70mm does not offer two extra stops unlike ƒ/1.4 and ƒ/2.0 prime lenses then why not?

Many cameras today are capable of delivering clean images at higher ISO sensitivities. So, kick the ISO sensitivity up by a stop or two to get similar equivalent (in shutter speed, of course, not the depth of field) as used with fast prime lenses.

If you need shallow depth of field then stick to fast prime lenses.

    Good luck.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Some primes perform poorly wide open (my 50mm f1.8 d), or are hideously expensive (e.g. new 35 nikkor), so the 24-70 seems like a bargain. I`ve got a d700 and have had good near-dark images with my f2.8 14-24, and usually do close-ups at around f3.5/4 so the bokeh subject is discernable. Thanks for your advice Lilkiwiguy87

  • FYI, not "some", try "all". There is no lens that performs beautifully at wide open. It is there for the learning curve, does not mean it is perfectly useable. Well, that is why they invented KEH where you can buy fast F/1.4 prime lenses used.

  • the technian at the nikon service center told me there's nothing wrong with the lens and he suspected it could be i'm using a DX camera D60...i can get sharp image using manual focus from f2.8 to f8 (not using range finder as its focus reading is also inaccurate). since when Autofocus is not compatible with D60? i'm really puzzled and anxious, i juz spent so much money on a lens that doesn't work properly. Pls advice. thx in advance!

  • If Nikon's repair service says nothing is wrong with the lens that you sent to them. Then the problem is probably coming from your D60.

The 24-70mm uses AF-S motor, which is fully compatible with D60 and all other similar cameras (D40, D40X, D3000, D3100, and D5000).

If you have a local camera store nearby, we would suggest you to go over and try it on another camera (D60 is discontinued but try it on D5000). If the results are sharp on D5000, then your D60 has a problem with the AF sensors.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 the D60 is indeed has AF issues on high end FX lens. i've tested my 24-70 on D90, D300, both images are sharp. 18-55 kit lens and FX 70-300 VR has no issues on D60. wonder why nikkon does not release a statement about this since D60 and 24-70 are both launch around 3yrs ago. it could have save some ppl lots of times and trouble. really disappointed that D60 is listed as compatible yet it's not.

  • No, there should not be a problem with any lens (any format, maximum aperture, and focal length). Have you tried another 24-70mm in the store on your D60?

Did you send the lens to Nikon along with your D60?

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 i didn't try another 24-70 on my D60 as the nikon technician claimed that he has replaced a new lens barrel unit and the results after replacements are still the same. i went there the 2nd time with my body and after some tests, he said it's the D60 inability to handle this lens 100%. for example the 3 point AF system is not enough to AF acurately with this lens.

i can't seem to find relevant reference to back his claims, i'm quite confused now.

  • That is just rubbish.

Does not matter how many AF points your camera has. It is supposed to be focusing accurately on the target within the focusing range (it will not focus accurately if the target is too close as in exceeding minimum focus distance).

We can guarantee you, D60 is fully compatible with the 24-70mm but something went wrong with the camera alone since your lens works just fine on other cameras. They might require calibration to fine-tune the focusing.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 I've emailed Nikon Service Centre to give me an official letter regarding this lens AF issues with D60. I want to see if it's the case of incompetence from the technician, as he concluded that it's the D60 incompatibility with this lens after he'd checked both my camera and lens.

  • i'm using this lens on my D60. i found that my images are sharpest at f7.1 instead of f4. could it be because of the D60?

  • We are not sure because it is one of many possibilities. We suggest you to watch our Proper Lens Sharpness Test video series to run some tests. Either it is the lens or your D60.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 i've just done the sharpness test, it only becomes sharp at f7.1 and remain about the same sharpness til around f10. at f4, it's way too soft where it supposed to be the sharpest. should i send both my camera and the lens for calibration?

  • We'd hate to say this, we're afraid so.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 thx for ur help. i was able to get sharp image using manual focus (range finder is off too) even wide open at f2.8. lol. i've to send to service center asap and will reject this lens if they can't calibrate as sharp as my manual focus.

  • what an elegant lens

  • Hey Kiwi,

There has a recent video showing that 24-70 has a light leaking problem. Does it happen on some of the lense because of a build error? Or its actually a lens design problem?

  • It is an user error. There is a sealant around below the focusing distance window. With improper caring (i.e. taking the lens out from hot environment to cold environment without allowing it to acclimate to temperate change), it will damage the glue that holds the sealant in position. That results in sealants being peeled off then lets the light fall in.

Simply send it in to Nikon to have it fixed under warranty.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Does anything happen to the D3s when taking it out from a cold enviroment to a hot enviroment

  • Yes, same kind of problem 24-70mm experienced.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 What can happen to my D3s

  • If you have damaged sealant, dust or moisture will make their way inside the camera then parade marches on by frying the circuits.

  • Hi there Lilki, I wanted to buy this lens for my D3000, however due to the fact that this lens has no VR (VR has saved me alot of time as my hands shake sometime), will me shooting portraits in indoor with poor lightning without tripod, make the pictures blur? Please advise me. Thank you very much. :)

  • This lens do not need VR and blurry images is caused by human error. You would need to crank the ISO up high to get faster shutter speeds. For example, using 24mm on 24-70mm, use shutter speeds faster than 24, such as 1/30s or faster. Another example, using 70mm, use shutter speeds faster than 70, such as 1/80s or faster.

You can get away taking sharp images without a tripod, except for long exposures, of course.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Thank you so much for your advises LilKi. :) I will take note of it.

  • Be more specific than "crackling", please.

  • Good lens , but expensive.

I buy 3 fixed focus lens, 24mm f2.8, 50mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 fo get similar image quality but only paid less than half of the price. Off course, I lose the convenience of the zoom.

  • I am going to see a used 24-70 today - still some serious money for me. What is a good way to evaluate used lenses? - what to look for and stuff like that. A video about used lens evaluation in general would be a suggestion.

  • Piece of cake. Look through the lens to check for any internal dust or scratches. Open down the aperture blades via a lever to make sure there's no stuck blade(s). Mount it and see if your camera communicates with it (AF, aperture, and focal length). Make sure the zooming and focusing rings rotate smoothly (no stiffness). Make sure it has valid warranty (unfilled card). Ask the seller for full background history with this lens. That's all.

  • Nice review! Mine should be here in a few days! i will be mounting it on my D90.

  • Great review!

Now i wonder, is there any downsides with using this on a D300 except for the crop factor? or is there a DX version of this lens?

  • No and no.

It will not make any difference if it is a DX lens or not on a DX body.

  • Alright! Thank you for the reply!

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 WAIT a minute...

    I don't see how this lens received a 10 of 10.

with distortion, usable aperture limits, vignetting & a high price.

Do you think this lens is worth the money?

do you think the 85mm f1.4 with it's purple & green fringing + no coating or seal is worth the price?

  • More than 90% of lenses have vignetting, distortion, limited useable apertures, and high costs.

Worth the money? Not up to us to decide; rent it out and see for yourself.

You cannot compare the 85mm ƒ/1.4D AF against the 24-70mm because they are in classes of their own.

Not sure what purple and green fringing you're talking about.

No coating, no problem and learn to work around it.

No sealing, no problem, keep it out of the rain or dust storms.

Again, rent it out and see for yourself.

  • very great videos you make there. nice music, much information instead of talking the same things over and over again, answering to questions here... good job! kinda sad for me that the 14-24 and 24-70 have that much vignetting on dx sensors, so i cannot buy them one after the other and then get a fx body... but still.

  • hey guys, I have few questions confusing about, and would be appreciated for any suggestions.

does this lens are compatible with d90? does it worth the price to buy this lens for D90 or should i go for 14-24mm 2.8 lens?

    thanks in advance!

    p.s

How many shutter clicks are capable D90 ? lol

  • Somebody didn't bother reading our channel profile information, it states two things; we was on vacation and every comment require an approval from one of us. No need to post the same comment 5 times.

    No problem on D90.

14-24mm or 24-70mm decision is up to you; not us. Rent them out and see for yourself which one suits you the most.

  • This is my main lens on the D3 now

    its got such versatility

  • thanks for the update !

please keep the good work :D

  • thx for the update Lilkiwi

  • TOO EFFING EXPENSIVE! but such a great lens.
