  • wasn't too bad actually haha

  • Im shooting a hockey game in a few hours with a sony a390 and a tamron 70-300 5.6 ... IM SCREWED!

  • that synthetic ice even sounds like real ice when you skid to a stop. is it getting really rutted?

  • @Dombowerphoto It sounds like you're on a basketball court. A loud screech.

  • This is a ton of great info, but it would be waaaay sweeter if you managed to do this at a game.

  • LOL, i took photos in an ice skate hall today.

  • Tip: You have to understand and know 110% what's ISO, Shutter speed and Aperture is. watch videos about it as much as you can, play with the settings, see how it works, once you know how to combine these 3 elements together (ISO, Shutter Speed & Aperture) you done.

  • This is where you shine Jared, good job!

  • you are a great skater Jared! :o)

  • hi jared what size are the prints in your wall? and what type of paper do you use matte or lustre? i want to print 20x30 and i have a canon 7do you think that the 7d has enough resolution to make a good 20x30 btw the canon 7d has 18mp and the resolution of mu photo is 5184 × 3456 thank you

  • great video, i already know the basics, but for those who don't, perhaps showing how to make changes on the camera, and before and after pics for adjustments. It's cool you have a skating rink indoors, but just having you stand in one spot the whole video might not be the best format for a video like this.

  • More videos of this type, please?

  • Hockey over here in the UK is nearly always outside on astro-turth. As we think of hockey - with a hockey stick and ball....not ice hockey. lol

  • i like the spray of ice when you hockey stop

  • @JaredPolin I find my 80-200mm f/2.8 lens to be too long for shooting youth hockey on my d7000. I assume that your 70/80-200 lens recommendation is assuming that the photographer is shooting with a full frame camera.

I wish that Nikon made a 50-120mm f/2.8 DX lens.

  • Love this type of informational video! Thanks!

  • You should find some dasher boards, and then get a hockey net. Lol or higher a carpenter and ask them to build you some hockey boards and get some plexi glass lol

  • 6 People hit Dislike because they're jealous of the Ice Rink ! ;)

  • Jared have u ever taken a puck to the fro? Would work better than a helmet me thinks. It would absorb a lot more energy

  • @JaredPolin I suggest to 'set a target' (a empty box or som like that), put the camera on the tripod, start filming.. and BOOM - let's see if you can hit the target, because probably you don't wanna practice on the DSLR :)

  • Is that a cropped photo on the wall behind you, Jared? :O Not your own I take it? ;)

  • @kakesen if i see what you are seeing then i would say thats a creative crop for a cinemativ look^^

  • @llleolllolll A crop non the less from the Fro! I dont believe it! :P

  • This video with the Main Menu is Awesome!!

    Do more like that!

  • can you go over some lenses in future videos? would be nice. i have a 70-300 lens for nikon, why do you and many photographers recommend the 70-200 lens? isnt it the same thing?! the 70-300 gives you an extra 100mm.

  • Is your ice slippery with shoes or is there something about the pairing of the skates and the ice that allow them to work?

  • @JaredPolin You need to get a new amp, Line6 is no good!

  • I always forget to bump the ISO D:

  • i want to cover my whole house in that stuff and just skate everywhere I mean why walk if I can do that!

  • What about spot metering on the ice and compensate -2?

  • @JeniHeartsMAC You should be fine. As long as your hands are warm. And maybe move into a warmer place during timeouts or something. Do they have time outs in hockey? Lol!

  • Can my D5100 be used if its below 32 degrees? I read the manual and it said 32 is lowest. Can I still use it if its under?

  • I think you should practice skating the other direction! Diversify!

  • In the new apartment you have so much room for activities....Step Brothers, funny movie.

  • Should I use a specific AF point or just leave it for the camera to use all of them?

  • lol with the helmet and orange you look like scoot hartnall lol

  • you need a net to shoot on

  • If you see this comment jared, i have to thank you dude. I've learn sooo much with your videos...

im new to this whole photography thing, just got a sony a55 (Best one i could find here where i live) and using your advices, i've been able to get some AMAZING photos.... i'll be more than happy to get on your forum to share. Thank you dude.

  • I play hockey left handed tooo jared! but in normal life i am a righty. I also sweep floors left handed. Go figure.

  • Jared, does that synthetic ice shave off like real ice? Is it durable?

  • I have a Tamron 70-300mm 5.6 with a EOS 400D, Both low end stuff, Is that all right stuff or could i have got Better to begin with?

  • @umpalumpa101909 And the 18-55 3.5

  • Problems I face for shooting hockey is the Plexi on the boards is so scratched up, and there's a large net around the top due to someone getting a puck to the eye, not any good locations.

  • @JaredPolin Could you please put the links in the description as well? There's no way to click them if you are using the Youtube mobile app.

  • So you talk about focusing modes as far as single or continuous but what about the focusing points? What would you recommend? All points? Single point? Cluster?

  • @eurokid12 thats def a great question and prob should have put that in there. Come Wed I have another hockey discussion video going up where I discuss the points. I stay on 9 or 21 in my camera but mostly 9 point continuous.

  • @JaredPolin Can the D3000 do cluster focusing....no guessing no since I have found it yet and I've had the camera for about 2 months lol

  • I have a question relevant to sport photography, how does the ISO work with sport photography ? I mean I've read a lot of reviews that say ISO is important for fast shots! .. please reply .. thanks ..

  • @tamim4ever it's important in that bumping your iso will get you faster shutter speed.

  • @LizardanNet thanks boss, you are the best .. :)

  • @tamim4ever You're welcome.

  • Can we have a video tour of your new apartment? it looks really nice.

  • @dubstylzmw wheres my manners... 'Please' :)

  • @dubstylzmw soon soon when my sofas come in.

  • @JaredPolin Awesome i look forward to that, keep up the good work dude :)

  • super video

  • Don't see an Ice Hockey tutorial every day. Uhm, *click*...watch.

  • @jared there's no where to rent from in my area.... I've googled a place but in the uk it's either too far away or its film lenses

  • @Wandomphoto Do you know of lensesforhire . co. uk/ they'll send you the lens.

  • jared i love you

  • Come to Toronto, we could have a shootout! I'm an unbelievably average goalie. You'll be fine at 5.6 with me in net,... No blur. And you save about $1000.00 buck.

  • Relevant to as im getting access to a local team soon, don't have fast glass tho, will see how that goes

  • @Wandomphoto you can always rent thats an option.

  • Yaaay tutorials

  • Is that a Line 6 in the back of the room?

  • @toccata33 it is.

  • @JaredPolin. Hey i've been an avid watcher for ages now. I'd just like to say that i really really like the way this channel is developing. Your enthusiasm and effort is really inspiring. Your mum would have been so proud.

A favour, please could you recommend which is a better buy, sigma 70-300. tamron 70-300, tamron 18-200? I have an 18-55 and a 50mm 1.8 (i have to manual focus it though)

    Thank you so much

    keep going FRO!!

  • @theaaplfan prob neither of them, try looking into some of the faster glass if possible.

  • @JaredPolin that's not an option by a long long way really, i need a decent length, but i can't spend much over £200

  • @JaredPolin I believe you owe him a specific answer like specific lens name you would advice him to buy given what he has now. Am I wrong?

@theaaplfan : You need to tell Jared what type of photography you are looking to take more often, so he could give you better suggestion. I am in the same place as you are and I realized that this is a very costly hobby.

  • @theaaplfan I have the Tamron and I must say this is a great great lens. It beats the Nikon in every single aspects. Not just the quality but also the feel and the VC. It feels like a great lens, it's built well. If it matters to you it also looks better and more professional. But the main reason I finally went with the Tamron over the Nikon is the VC. It literally stops everything, It's simply amazing, it like freezes the scene. Just my opinion.

  • @theaaplfan even if you're on a tight budget, try to track down a second hand Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. That's the (cheaper) telezoom you want for sports photography. Get the one you want (and, in this case, need) right away and not after two lenses that didn't really suffice. Considering AF, my Sigma has got ok AF performance, well at least on the D700.

  • @theaaplfan i have the tamron 70-300mm. Really Love it! ok fro is right not the fastest glass arround, but it's definitely a real bargain! would buy it again anytime!

  • There's some really good tips in this video for sports/action in general, though I think the absolute best thing to take great sports photo's is to understand and love the sport you're trying to capture.

Do you perhaps have some tips specifically for motorsports/Go Kart racing?

I regularly take photo's at amateur races and I've been getting better at it over time, but I still end up with lots of blurry pictures simply because my D3100 can't focus on the action fast enough.

  • @DaHitch666 you def hit on that, i am not sure why I did not mention that in the video but knowing the sport is a huge part of the battle. I dont have any go kart racing videos but that def gives me an idea to go do some kind of video at the track.

  • 25:28 is a great moment to freeze jared skating on the ice, really! (:

  • As Jared slides on the carpet, make sure you freeze the image with the pause button, it can be done freezes great for shooting and simulate interesting positions.

    Thanks Jared, great teaching, Success!

  • does anybody know what size photos those are in the background

  • @zea31907 30x45

  • @JaredPolin im looking to do a similar setup with black and white photos in my living room any advise; im new to photography so im not sure on which lens to use or how to approach it to be honest

  • this video is really epic and your awsome your like a tutor and i'm a fan of you

  • How do I get my pictures to look like they're in magazines during post processing? Am I not using certain filters?

  • Comment removed

  • Heya Fro,

This is probably the most well-explained and easy-to-understand scenario for understanding the exposure triangle. It's just so obvious in this situation, so when anyone asks about the exposure triangle, give them this video and not any other!

  • Comment removed

  • Okay, this video is fairly epic. I would never even photograph ice hockey, but this video is epic anyway.

  • Dude this vid seemed like it was made to just to show off or some kind of publicity for the ice company. You've said the same things in almost the same way as in other vids. Also the shot ideas were just you circling and saying shoot the front. I suggest actually revisiting the local ice rink and just expand on your old video. As a long time reader I assume that many have already grown with your help and I would expect that the content and quality of videos should follow along and become dynamic

  • great Job... !! you are an excellent teacher.

  • Look at his face for like 5 minutes, then look away to some wall, and you'll see a silhouette of his fro!!! LOL

  • Hey jared i was wondering how you display the prints on your walls? presuming that you order them from adorama, do they come on a board or whats the deal there? thanks!

  • Very nicely presented video Jared. I liked the menu at the start, very useful. Keep up the good work!

  • thumbs this up if you wanna no how he made this ice ring

  • 16:45 thumbs up if you said "BOOM" at the same time as Jared

  • one question: does the camera or the lens having problems with the temperature, when shooting icehockey?

  • Yo Jared, I got a Sigma 24-70 2.8 IF EX DG on Saturday (YAY!) and I've noticed that it produces cleaner images on my T3i than my 50 1.4 did at higher ISOs 1600 for example looks like 800 did (or better) before. Does this make sense?? I didn't expect it at all.

  • This is exactly what I needed. Would ya know I'm shooting my first hockey game at the end of the month

  • Like the buttons! : {D

  • Jared, what is your view on using crative blur occasionally? By this, I do not meen panning or using a tight depth of field to blur the background. I mean using a slightly slower shutter speed to say - blur the stick and put as the player hits the put in order to add some drama and action to the shot? Thumbs up so that he can see this please? (I've not finished the video yet so sorry if you mention it - I just thought I'd post this before I forget)

  • amazing new video format!

  • You're welcome I'm sure.

  • Please do a review of the Nikon AF-S VR 70-300/4,5-5,6 G IF-ED ? :) Thumbs up so he can see this!

  • Great idea with dividing the video up in the beginning. Keep that feature in longer videos!

  • Great info as usual! I miss watching sniff tests. Can't wait for your D4 sniff test. I can predict it will smell of awesome.

  • I hope Jared makes more videos like this explaining in detail what kind of camera settings to use in particular situations.

  • @JaredPolin

    Hey Jared.

I'm a 15 year old off to Iceland in a month or two and thanks to you I will be able to take some amazing photos (hopefully :P).

I am currently using a Sony NEX-5 as that is all I can afford at the moment and I looking at photography more as a hobby than a career.

I would just like to say (again) thanks for the help over the year I have been watching your videos and they are great!!

The community is always growing and hopefully I'll be able to show you my pictures ^ ^

  • interested in shooting hockey or not, these videos are really entertaining. i love them :)

  • wow it's difficult...

Here in italy we play only football...:D

  • I don't think many of your viewers shoot hockey or are interested in synthetic ice...

  • Yes I know I watched the video. But I didn't learn anything I didn't already know. I think he should focus on different kinds of photography instead of repeating the same things over and over again. Maybe a light trails tutorial etc. @HARV3YHAN5RA

  • @Amcacs5654 this is more of an update to something much older, its much better. This is more of the direction I am going with the content. I am going to be getting into things like you suggested.

  • @Amcacs5654 thats perfectly fine. Its all about word of mouth. You may know someone who one day may be interested. But this was about making hockey videos more than saying hey come get some synthetic ice. I asked those guys for it they said yes, the least i could do was give them the shout out.

  • Are those prints framed? - I can't seem to figure out what it was hung with.

  • @1rhett1 they are not, they are encapsulated.

  • Great advice Jared. Thankyou.

  • I was wondering, when your out for fun just relaxxing. Do you have a small camera with you at all times? like a p&s or mirrorless slr?

  • @hairybearz My bet is that he stores his D3s along with the holy trinity right there in the fro, ready to shoot at any time!

  • @dude2106 haha lol

  • @hairybearz I usually dont have anything other than the iphone at this point. If I want to shoot I take the d3s.

  • @JaredPolin okay, thanks for always answering my comments!

  • @JaredPolin No Nikon V1?

  • awesome info jared

    thank you

  • Very helpful, looking forward to shooting a Sharks game soon.

  • Good advice, but you forgot one thing Jared.

Become a referee and bring your camera with you. I bet you could get some great shots.

  • @midiman16 he is a referee

  • I would like to see one for wedding photography.

  • Great!

  • I got a 100-400L on a canon 7D.

Also I am afraid to go over 1600ISO for pictures even in RAW, could I go higher ISO wise?

  • Comment removed

  • @MindlessDigital i wouldnt even go to 1600. I have a T2i and the sensor is the same as the 7d. and i wouldnt even touch 1600.

  • @MindlessDigital you could go higher with your 7d but the issue honestly is the 100-400 its not going to let in enough light. You see what I mean when you use that lens what is going to happen to your iso? The iso has to go up because the lens does not let in enough light.

  • But are the pictures still useable on 3200 or up?

Or should I (in that given situation) put my best bet on a faster shorter lens (50mm 1.4 / 24-70 2.8)?

  • Third

  • This is really convenient if you want to play hockey in an island at the Caribbean. (Puerto Rico my home).

  • Dude youre just the best!!! Thxs for making learning so much easer!

  • Comment removed
