Just love this song and it's the first time I'm hearing it. I know all of their songs, but this one I never heard of until now. Love the beat and KC's vocal range.
This song went nowhere in the USA (a mixed-race band = radio-play problems) but in the UK went Top 10 in spring 1974. I remember seeing their "promo film" (aka music video) - filmed on a 1940s-style tiered stage - being shown on LWT's Saturday morning kids magazine show "Saturday Scene" (presented by a pre-Tiswas Sally James),
KC&tSB had many more hits in the UK and Europe but it took another 3 years before the band finally caught on back home in the USA (with "Boogie Shoes").
Saw these guys in concert last September. They played all the big hits (Get Down Tonight, Shake Your Booty, etc...), but I was a little disappointed when they didn't play Queen of Clubs. It was still a blast, one way or the other!
that,s george mccrae doing the high notes in that song,i,ts the same year that kc and the sunshine wrote rock your baby originallly for gwen mccrae but the song suited georges voice better and wen,t on to become worldwide number 1
People constantly ruin videos on youtube with their stupid banners. This one may not claim to be this person's video but do I really need the obvious title of the band and song?????
Brilliant, no I'll say that again, BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT music. The bass-line, the melodic hook, the horns - this band and this song have got it *ALL*!!
Having said that, you can sort of tell they're miming this, can't you? ;)
This bombed in the USA - only the UK and some continental countries got it.
I remember seeing this tape on LWT's Saturday Scene back in spring 74 and it blew my little 7 yr old mind. Then I FW to Jan 80 and "Please Don't Go" where HWC is FUBAR on snort. And half the band gone - likewise, prolly.
Then later I lived a couple yrs in South Fla. And understood.
You cannot have mixed bands win - like KC or Sly Stone - in the USA. Huey Morgan can't talk about Led Zep or DMC about The Stones
gotta love it when the guys start bumping!! disco was all-inclusive.. black/white, male/female, gay/straight.. this song and band perfectly reflects the club scene in 1974!
imagine this ultra funky tune being picked-up and performed by one of those non-musical but extremely popular hiphop dudes - WHAT a change that would bring to all these young kids - REAL danceable music at last
@erscott13 I had no idea that the high voice belonged to George McCrae. This was the group's first hit, it reached the UK top ten, but failed to chart in the US.
@GrahamLondonUK, it's a shame it didn't reach the top ten here; it's such a great song. I am so thankful to YouTube for giving me opportunities to learn so much about music I would otherwise never have a chance to know about. Not to mention re-finding old, obscure stuff I loved in my youth.
@erscott13 I agree completely, Elisabeth! YouTube is brilliant for rediscovering music and television programmes from the past, also it is fascinating to discuss the subject of a video with other interested viewers.
He died in 2000 accidentally as a heavy machine operator. Will always be remembered as a legend guitarist.he also played guitar in George Mcrae's "Rock Your baby".
wow only 3,000 views and if u go up and look up rap it has millions!! they don't know what music is. they need to listen to this stuff, and plus this is my favorite song.
They do listen , then they steal ..oops I mean "sample" (those who can't play & create their own music take it from others aka sampling, ahhh the modern electronic musician) KC's "I Get Lifted" has been sampled on numerous rap songs and then there was the "Boogie Shoes " sample on "Take It To The House"
@rockfrk plus these guys are proper musicians. i think it's such a shame that black music took a wrong turn at some point a few years ago. my parents saw them play in las vegas in 1983. apparently they brought the house down - standing ovations, dozens of encores - the audience wouldn't let them go.
Love the way everyone goes mental in the last few seconds and abandons all pretence at miming! Fantastic band, great song and brilliant memories - thanks!
Actually, those high notes were done by George McCreae. Casey and Finch (Keyboard and Bass, respectively) wrote him "Rock Your Baby" in '73 or '74, I think, and I guess he owed KC a solid.
Just love this song and it's the first time I'm hearing it. I know all of their songs, but this one I never heard of until now. Love the beat and KC's vocal range.

I thought the backing vocals were females.

The high voice is George McCrae, who made a hit out of the first song Casey and Finch wrote, Rock Your Baby. (Apparently they were lip-syncing here.)
