I don't get it... Windmills and the like are producing loads of jobs, low-skilled and high-skilled for Britain? and it is also producing cleaner energy, something that European firms are good at and gives them a competitve advantage...
@Oijsen These windmills are not produced in the UK, there are only a few manufactures left, in Denmark and Norway ? The rest went bankrupt. The only jobs that these things produce is mowing the grass around them.
well we need all of the above in renewable energy, especially when it comes to briton, its not like theres a lot of solar activity , and instead of building these giant mills miles away we need better designed mills that can be put in each house and what the people want. Nigel defitnetley makes a good point because in the end all these is make more pollution ironically enough. so each building and house and home etc should be energy indepent instead of this landfilling madness.
It's not about climate something its about energy security which can only be improved if our dependency on oil and gas is reduced or at least fought against.
Wind power is the most efficient alternative energy source other than large scale water power plants. So its the one alternative energy source needing the least subsidies. (may I remind everyone that nuclear power gets huge subsidies, just as a side remark)
Oh really? More money goes into research for nuclear energy than into research of alternative energies.
Wind power is not only the most competitive alternative energy source, apart from large scale water power, given only slightly higher oil prices than now, it won't even need any subsidies anymore. Same could not be said of nuclear energy.
"Wind power is the most efficient alternative energy source other than large scale water power plants"
Yes, "alternative" as in not viable.
For all those lovely wind farms you build you will have to build coal or nuclear plants to back them up, thus fullfulling your self defeating philosophy.
You don't need to do so for all of its capacity. Moreover a new generation of wind power is being realized now. Off shore wind parks have fundamentally different features. The potential is big and its a pretty reliable source as well, drastically reducing the need for back up capacities.
One more point. Its a huge difference if you have a back up plant or a plant running and consuming vast amounts of fuel. The latter is the strategic problem not the former.
@smoochym uhm but if you build wind farms and nuclear plants that reduces oil consumption greatly. this is not just about climate change, it's about using up oil
I think that the people in Westminster are scared of you Nigel as you are honest and make sense. That is none of the attributes a westminster MP has. It is farcicle to say that we live in a democracy. It will make my year to see you going into Westminster as the MP for Buckingham. We are all behind you. Vote UKIP.
Wind turbines use rare earth metals. Most of these are mined in China, causing devastating pollution, poisoning water, destroying farmland and killing animals and, probably, people. China has a virtual monopoly on these rare earths. Each wind turbine uses about 2 tons of these metals. Some scientists have estimated that they will run out within the next few years because of the huge demand for them for 'green' technology. Do a search on 'rare earth metals wind turbines china'.
Our Farage looks like Boycey from Only Fools and Horses in that coat. Still I'd rather look like Boycey than a low grade bank clerk. God bless you Farage. Much love.
When will the BBC start acknowledging the dubious nature of the Climate change debate and the nonsensical nature of building huge swathes of absurd windfarms across our countryside?
I wonder what companies are getting no bid contracts to build these things. I bit that has more to do with it then the environment. Its just a cover for scamming the British people out of their hard earned money.
So what do you suggest, more wind farms that only work when there's wind? What about when there is no wind? Expect to see power shortages, massive rises in taxes and electricity bills which is not so bad if you're well off but the poor and old will pay heavily for what amounts to nonsense, also the possibility of pensioners dying when they run out of books to burn.
Simple, dear Watson. In case of lack of wind we shall use people instead to turn the wings. This way - unemployment rate wil go down, an wind farm efficiency should rise above 25% :-)
I'm in favour of renewable energy in principle but obviously windmills are boondoggles. In the end all energy sources are finite, it's just a matter of timescale. The endgame is fusion but the technology is still beyond our grasp. In the meantime, modern nuclear fission (breeder) is an acceptable solution. Thorium reactors could be a solution in a decade or two.
The idea of course is to make the dishwasher, laundry washer and electrical car (not enough battery stuff for that anyway) all reactive to some radio frequency that tells them when to start. That way you would have peak usage at peak supply. Of course, when there is no wind you need a stack of clothes...
We need a more dense energy source such as nuclear. The type of tech such as wind mil or solar panel is good for a person to buy them & have them as their personal energy sources.
I don't know why nuclear energy isn't more seriously considered as a solution to the so-called energy crisis. I don't buy into the peak oil crap, but even so the nuclear option is there. I guess people are afraid of nuclear power due to government botch ups in providing it.
I thought that the windmills made enough money for many people that they would actually pay into the national grid and the guy owning it gets money. I dont see why people are against them so long as they are paid for correctly and not "overpiad" for. Afterall, the more "national" energy we can make, the less we have to bring here thus more money stays incountry.
The effective thing is true, for most the nation, shame the "few" good places dont get used.
At least we have an area more likely to vote UKIP. BTW you should know that even though global warming is nonsense sunspot activity has not cause the warming from 1975-2001. It is more likely to be the pacific decadal oscillation.

The green lobby and it's government's backers are hindering the development of new nuclear technology.
If wind power is the most 'efficient alternative energy' then we must look at other alternatives.
