I thinik kaeshi waza are techniques that deflect / parry attacks and counter with your own. Like men kaeshi do is when you deflect a men strike and hit their do.

Technically he is not a samurai. He would need to serve a lord to become a samurai and the feudal system has long since disappeared. He would be considered a modern swordsman carrying on the warrior traditions of the Japanese - and indeed he is extremely good.
