Got a used unicycle (oldschool Schwinn 24 in) at the new year. Finally getting the hang with it but can't seem to rock with my left foot, only with the right.
I'm a beginner, and I do find this instruction helpful, but I haven't seen any mention of what I found to be most important for getting started, and that's to sit HEAVILY on the seat. That's where the weight of the body has to be for any kind of stability or balance, and this is completely different from a two-wheeler, where the weight is on the pedals. Please, I invite comment from you more experienced riders. Thanks
I disagree with you about falling backwards. I've been riding a long time, and when I fall off the front I can almost always run out of it without falling. Off the back, I'm much more likely to fall down.
backwards?! i dont know about that... i generally dismount more backwards.. uni out front.. but... falling...i think is all up to what you did wrong...I mean if you are going forward... at any speed... and fall... backwards... hmm... i just know when I fall the uni ends up like.. 10 feet away from me... unless I happen to catch it.. i just dont know.. thats wierd that.. you WANT to fall backwards... i dont know what the.. perks to backwards would be..
isee his point and for that sweet spot - jus hold onto something and jus SIT there. ull feel it (i THINK thats it) but. i read somewhere else that ur sposed to fall FORWARDS and then bring the wheel UNDERNEATH you to do it cuz thats how u get going ... if you dont u fall over backwards - and better to fall backwards? i guess if its not too bad but if u hit ur head then ur screwed --forwards u can put ur hands out if its really bad but if it isnt u mite get hit wif the pedeals x]

I find looking forward (not down) and weight on the seat make me ride smoother (I'm still in my first week & clinging to walls in a hallway)
