Nice shooting there, got myself a 1895gs a couple of weeks ago and shot it with remington 405gn bullets but it seems like a very light load so now im handloading for it. What kind of ammo are u yousing?

i've always wondered about how safe it is to shoot at things with tires behind it like that. I've seen videos where the bullet bounces off and comes straight back towards the shooter. what are your thoughts on that?
Campcook, thanx for the info. I didnt know the ammo couldnt be shipped to Canada. They passed the same law here in california to ban all internet/mail delivery ammo sales. Thankfully a court ruled that unconstitutional for the time being. Yeah, i love my Delta 10mm and my marlin guide gun. Thnx for the video!
@ColtDeltaElite10mm 10mm is my favorite semi-auto handgun round I also have a 18" T/C Contender barrel a G20 with a 5" KKM barrel and a G29 with a 4.25" Storm Lake barrel I also have 40S&W barrels for both the glocks and an Advantage Arms 22LR conversion kit for the G20...
Campcook, i know you reload, but have you ever tried "Double Tap Ammo?". They make the full power loadings with a 405gr PSP and its not the watered down stuff like Remington etc... Their loadings are for modern .45-70 chamberings. IIRC, BuffaloBore has a hard cast lead loading in the 500gr area. Cant remember exactly now.
@ColtDeltaElite10mm I shoot a Colt Delta Elite in 10mm as well bought it in 1988 and that is how I first found out about Mike McNett of Double Tap I still use his load data that he posted on Glock Talk 10mm Reloading forum.
I am in Canada Double Tap/Buffalo Bore/Garret etc cannot ship their ammo up here even if they did I would still reload my own I load from 300gr - 550gr in this 1895GS 45-70 rifle comes down to I load basically the exact same loads at a fraction of the cost..
30 years canoeing prospecting and camping I have only had to carry a shotty for preds maybe 2 weeks. Spray, short compounds a machete all I need to be safe. Awareness and a calm head are your first defense, no beer in bush or take-out. Nice fast draw though, on a trail you may even get one off before a cougar clamps on your skull. Too many frightened novice gun owners freak out and shoot anything on site I have learned first hand. Who even eats bear anymore other than indigenous folks?
What sling are you using in this video? Looks like a Butler Creek padded stock, but I can't tell 100%. How comfortable is it for carrying over long distances?
@CampCook12345 Thank you sir. I agree about not using the slings that carry ammo on them. I had one of those shotgun slings that held like 16 shotgun shells before. All that weight swinging around under the gun can really screw up your group. Good shooting BTW.
sir I'm looking to buy lever action rifle but confuse what catridge I am split between 30.30, 45-70, 444, 450. I want some thing which is a true grizzly stopper and can travel a good distance 200 plus yard. Any suggestion will be highly appreciated
All but the 30-30 are considered cartridges that will reliably take a grizzly with that said grizzlies have been killed using a 30-30...
If you do not reload and have to use factory ammo the 450 Marlin would be my choice for factory available ammo.
A 45-70 can loaded to exactly the same performance levels as a 450 M though rounds from companies like Garret are available that match 450 M performance in a 45-70.
I have a Marlin 45/70 that I use for bear hunting. I love it. But the better scope the better shot you will get. I wouldn't recommend trying to shoot a 45/70 any more than a 100 yards with just sights. Also you want to make sure your grain is larger enough for a bear. I used a 405 grain for a black bear.
@ikonik69 I never heard anyone complaining about 45-70. If it's used in safari, for elephants and rhinos,it sure will take down a grizzly...Better ton more, than grain less
@ikonik69 none of the above....30-30 won't kill a griz, less u put the muzzle in his mouth and none of the calibers above are 200+ yd rounds...leverevolution rounds might barely get you there in a few of those calibers
1) The new pistol grip 1895 SBL in 45-70 comes with an over sized loop none of the rest as far as I know do though.
2) I understand that Remington has bought out Marlin and that they are relocating the manufacturing plant resulting in many of the employees either losing their jobs or having to relocate which could be a reason for quality control to have slid downhill that is if it has I have had my 1895GS for some time now so do not know what the newer production guns are like.
@CampCook12345 ??? The top loads that I tried in my 22" barrel were 405gr Speer @ 1850fps. But recoil is beyond extreme! I won't shoot those loads anymore because they hurt, & I'm not going to be hunting Grizzlies anytime soon, so I backed off. Now I use 300gr Hornady HP @ 1850fps. I can handle that load, but not firing it fast. My rifle kicks up way too much.
Well, recoil is subjective, maybe I just can't handle those 405s? So what's your bullet weight/velocity? Barrel length? Ported? Padded?
These loads are 350gr Hornady jacketed RN FP @ appr 2000fps - 2050fps my Marlin is an 18.5" non-ported barrel 1895GS (s/s guide gun) I load from 300gr Hornady JHP @ 2100fps - 500gr Jae-Bok Young hard cast WLNGC's @ 1580fps.
I load Speer 405gr to 1950fps and my favorite do everything bullet is the 350gr Swift A-Frame @ 2050fps.
I install Kick-Eez magnum recoil pads on all of my heavy recoiling rifles it is amazing how they reduce felt recoil.
I was out deer hunting the last few days with the Marlin set up the same way as in the video didn't see any deer but with my 350gr Swift A-Frame loads I knew they would get the job done if I did mine...
Took a few practice shots @ 155 yards sure is a fun combo to play with... :)
Nothing slicker than that Marlin 45-70.....Awesome video.....I must have watched this a dozen times.....You don't have autographed 'shot up targets' do you? I have a spot for you on my 'hero wall', right next to my autographed pic of the 'Gunny' (R. Lee Ermey)! Seriously though, it gives all of us enthusiasts something to strive for......Great shooting!
Very nice mate! I'm thinking of getting either a 450 mar or 45-70 1895. Mainly for hunting warthogs and bushpigs. (Close in) The 450 would be a special import though. Is the 450 really that much better than the 45-70? I see you have ghost ring sights. Are they standard? How reliable are the Marlin rifles?
@Grppnfhrr I load my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 to 450 Marlin velocities so as far as I am concerned they give exactly the same performance.
I removed the stock rear sight and added the XS Sights low Weaver backup ghost ring sights and front post.
I mount the rear ghost ring sight onto the rear Warne 2 piece scope bases that I installed, when I want a scope on the rifle I pop the ghost ring sight off and mount my Leupold Compact 2-7X scope with Leupold QRW rings.
@gunguru762x54R The round isn't easy to compare to rifle or pistol calibers, it and a few other rounds are a bit oddball in that regard, this is a .45 going far faster than anything a pistol will deliver, slower than say a .308, but its a far larger round, so it's quite quite likely going to do more damage, despite delivering similar energy
Very nice shooting buddy and thanks for the post. I have purchased one of these guide guns in a stainless finish myself but i have to ask where did you get your version or model of the guide gun with the black/gray laminate finish? I cant seem to find one like it. Is your barrel ported because mine is not :/
@TrIGgeRFiEnD Bought the rifle as a regular Marlin 1895GS then found out that Marlin had done a special run of 500 rifles in s/s black/gray laminate so I at first searched for the rifle they were already sold out so I called Marlin and asked if they could sell me the stock.
They told me they would phone me back if they could help me out.
Three- four days later they called me back telling me they had one set that they would sell me so I bought them... :)
@CampCook12345 Haha well I called them up and told them that I had a limited edition version of this gun and told them that I accidentally dropped and broke the stock of this rifle, and they charged me for a brand new stock just like yours :) and it should be on its way already lol.
I replaced the original stocks on my Marlin 30AS and 1894 44. mag. with the laminated gray/black stocks form the XLR series. Got one thru Marlin and the other from Brownells. both of these rifles have blued barrels and recivers and with the stock replacement they are very nice looking weapons, also love the feel of the laminated ones a whole lot better
@Bougainville100 yes it is accurate far beyond 100 yards with the ghost ring sight set up I have on this rifle I can easily group 6 shots into under 6" @ 150 yards in field conditions with my 350gr Swift A-Frame loads..
Yes I do recommend replacing the factory recoil pad I use and totally recommend Kick-Eez recoil pads I have them on all of my heavy recoiling rifles, they will reduce felt recoil better than any other recoil pad that I have ever found.
@GunFreak270 i guess that depends on your definition of "accurate"...i've had to fine tune almost all of my firearms...by the way...even though your name is "gun freak"...i would refrain from using the term "gun"...sounds amateurish. it's like when i hear someone refer to ammo as "bullets"...i instantly know im not talking a knowledgeable arms person
@eatmytool1 sorry about that. I just couldn't find a better name than GunFreak. Believe me, I am very intellegent when it comes to firearms. I was trying to say that just about every new firearm, straight from the factory, these days will drill some holes into targets. Thanks to modern technology and all that good stuff!
Looks like your rifle is stainless with laminate wood. Did it come that way? I ask because Marlin doesn't seem to offer that combo on their web site and I'd like to go stainless/laminate.
bought the rifle as a stock 1895GS then found out that Marlin had done a run of 500 with the black/gray laminate stocks so first called to find the complete rifle when the answer was no I asked if they would sell me a butt stock and fore end from what I understand I am the only person they have ever sold the stocks to seperately.
Here's one that might be better I am modifying a Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM I had the barrel shortened to 21" and a NECG Masterpiece banded front sight and fiber optic post installed.
Mounted Leupold VX3 2.5-8X36mm B&C scope with QRW bases and rings when I pop the scope off I install a rear XS Sights Tall Weaver backup ghost ring sight.
Shooting 300gr Swift Aframe @ 2650fps - 2700fps right now want to try some 350/380gr Rhino/North Fork bullets should be able to push them easily to 2400 - 2450.
The front post wasn't high enough so as soon as NECG gets the new higher post in (they had to bring it in from Germany) I'll post a video of me shooting the short 375RUM. :)
Felt recoil is hard to describe and is different for everyone some can handle far more than others.
I'm guessing that my rifle weighs about 7.5 lbs and the 350gr bullets I am shooting in the video are giving about 35 ft lbs of free recoil energy and I load 405gr bullets to about 42ft lbs, 525gr = 43.5 ft lbs and 550's = 46 ft lbs.
Compare this to a 8lbs 308 rifle with a 150gr bullet @ 2800fps = 15 ft lbs or a 130gr 270 @ 3200fps = 16.5 ft lbs of free recoil.
Nice shooting, I live in northern b.c. and pack my guide gun whenever i'm in the bush. There is no substitute for firepower, and the 45-70 handles as good as any gun i've ever packed.Definitely more gun than a bear can handle
My son & I just came back from a prospecting trip we also had grizzly tags for this area we were just north of Fort St James in the Techentlo Lake area my son packed this rifle everywhere.
It was always loaded with 525gr Beartooth Piledrivers loaded to 1600fps.
How far from target are you? What trigger work or modifications have been done to the rifle? What kind of sling? What 45-70 brand Ammo / load would you recomend for Bear? Very nice gun control.A+ Job. Thanks-Tim
I have a standard Marlin 1895SS with pistol comb and 22 inch heavy barrel. I bought about 25 years ago. It is equiped with a leather sling, detachable swivels and williams peep sight. That is a very fast handling gun as well. With 300 grain factory loads it is mild in it's recoil. However, with if one were to use some real hot handloads, you would need a recoil pad. I used to use the rifle up in the Rangely lakes area of Maine to hunt with. My brother now uses it and won't give it back!
I just bought the 50th anniversary .44 mag blackhawk. I love it. I thing Im going to compliment it with the Marlin 1895, Ballard barrel, 45-70. What barrel lenght do you recommend for big game hunting, 200 yards or less?
He gets out four rounds in 7 seconds. If a bear had full speed of 30 mph (about 44 feet per second), the bear would cover 308 ft in that time. It takes almost 3 seconds to get off the first round. That would give a protection range of 132 ft, or 44 yards, provided the first shot is on target. Of course, not all bears will be that fast, but in some situations the animal might have a downhill or wind advantage or the firing might be delayed by the rifleman's surprise. Nice video, though.
Is that a tri-rail tactical mount on your magazine tube? If so, where did you acquire it? I want to mount one on my Marlin 1895GS. Thanks! Jason Charles Reichenbach, Esq., Prestonsburg, Kentucky USA
Very nice shooting .... Have a different stock on my Classic, so having to fine tune the dismount a bit... getting there.. Not good enough to film yet though...
Skills, camp cook. mad skillz.

I crony'd the Factory Hornady FTX 325 gr's today.
Unlike the rating on the box 2,060 they only produced an average of 1,880.
None reached the 2,000 fps.
My handloads of the same bullet FTX 325's produced the same.
No quams about it . This is good enough.
My hand loaded 405 gr. bullet barn cast's were impressive.
They averaged at 1,900 fps. Cool. most consistent too.
Thats enough power to stay on target. I'll keep it there.
Put 6 holes in a 10 inch circle at 30yrds. standing.

Grppnfhrr 1 year ago
@Grppnfhrr I load my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 to 450 Marlin velocities so as far as I am concerned they give exactly the same performance.
I removed the stock rear sight and added the XS Sights low Weaver backup ghost ring sights and front post.
I mount the rear ghost ring sight onto the rear Warne 2 piece scope bases that I installed, when I want a scope on the rifle I pop the ghost ring sight off and mount my Leupold Compact 2-7X scope with Leupold QRW rings.
CampCook12345 1 year ago
are these considered a high powered rifle or apistol caliber
gunguru762x54R 1 year ago
@gunguru762x54R it is a rifle cartridge introduced in 1873 in a single shot Springfield Trapdoor.
Don't know if I would call it high powered though, I would call my Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM high powered.
CampCook12345 1 year ago
@gunguru762x54R The round isn't easy to compare to rifle or pistol calibers, it and a few other rounds are a bit oddball in that regard, this is a .45 going far faster than anything a pistol will deliver, slower than say a .308, but its a far larger round, so it's quite quite likely going to do more damage, despite delivering similar energy

Very nice shooting buddy and thanks for the post. I have purchased one of these guide guns in a stainless finish myself but i have to ask where did you get your version or model of the guide gun with the black/gray laminate finish? I cant seem to find one like it. Is your barrel ported because mine is not :/
TrIGgeRFiEnD 1 year ago
@TrIGgeRFiEnD Bought the rifle as a regular Marlin 1895GS then found out that Marlin had done a special run of 500 rifles in s/s black/gray laminate so I at first searched for the rifle they were already sold out so I called Marlin and asked if they could sell me the stock.
They told me they would phone me back if they could help me out.
Three- four days later they called me back telling me they had one set that they would sell me so I bought them... :)
CampCook12345 1 year ago
@CampCook12345 Haha well I called them up and told them that I had a limited edition version of this gun and told them that I accidentally dropped and broke the stock of this rifle, and they charged me for a brand new stock just like yours :) and it should be on its way already lol.
TrIGgeRFiEnD 1 year ago
@TrIGgeRFiEnD Oh man that is awesome and now I know how to get a replacement stock if I ever need it...

i like the limb saver pads....ive shot a couple big bores with them and have one on my marlin 1895 45-70

" pack a gun over pepper spray" absolutely !
That whole yelling at the bear" bad bear , go away bear " or playing dead crap theory doesnt hold any water.

Great gun and video , thanks for sharing.

That is great shooting. I am very interested in getting one. Is it accurate to 100 meters? Do you recommend a recoil pad? Thanks.
Bougainville100 2 years ago
@Bougainville100 yes it is accurate far beyond 100 yards with the ghost ring sight set up I have on this rifle I can easily group 6 shots into under 6" @ 150 yards in field conditions with my 350gr Swift A-Frame loads..
Yes I do recommend replacing the factory recoil pad I use and totally recommend Kick-Eez recoil pads I have them on all of my heavy recoiling rifles, they will reduce felt recoil better than any other recoil pad that I have ever found.
CampCook12345 2 years ago
@Bougainville100 just about every gun you buy off the shelf is accurate these days.
GunFreak270 1 year ago
@GunFreak270 i guess that depends on your definition of "accurate"...i've had to fine tune almost all of my firearms...by the way...even though your name is "gun freak"...i would refrain from using the term "gun"...sounds amateurish. it's like when i hear someone refer to ammo as "bullets"...i instantly know im not talking a knowledgeable arms person
eatmytool1 1 year ago
@eatmytool1 sorry about that. I just couldn't find a better name than GunFreak. Believe me, I am very intellegent when it comes to firearms. I was trying to say that just about every new firearm, straight from the factory, these days will drill some holes into targets. Thanks to modern technology and all that good stuff!
GunFreak270 1 year ago
Looks like your rifle is stainless with laminate wood. Did it come that way? I ask because Marlin doesn't seem to offer that combo on their web site and I'd like to go stainless/laminate.
prebans 2 years ago
bought the rifle as a stock 1895GS then found out that Marlin had done a run of 500 with the black/gray laminate stocks so first called to find the complete rifle when the answer was no I asked if they would sell me a butt stock and fore end from what I understand I am the only person they have ever sold the stocks to seperately.
CampCook12345 2 years ago
great drill (and shooting as well)...not many things in the shooting world compare to a big bore lever going into action quickly
ftf1987 2 years ago
CampCook12345 2 years ago
sounds intense....hope you put the video up for us all to enjoy
ftf1987 2 years ago
The front post wasn't high enough so as soon as NECG gets the new higher post in (they had to bring it in from Germany) I'll post a video of me shooting the short 375RUM. :)

johell999 2 years ago
awsome! from what ive seen this is a good cartrage for grizzly but how is the recoil?
sniper1724 2 years ago
Hope that helps...

Nice shooting, I live in northern b.c. and pack my guide gun whenever i'm in the bush. There is no substitute for firepower, and the 45-70 handles as good as any gun i've ever packed.Definitely more gun than a bear can handle
4570ss 2 years ago 2
My son & I just came back from a prospecting trip we also had grizzly tags for this area we were just north of Fort St James in the Techentlo Lake area my son packed this rifle everywhere.
It was always loaded with 525gr Beartooth Piledrivers loaded to 1600fps.

How far from target are you? What trigger work or modifications have been done to the rifle? What kind of sling? What 45-70 brand Ammo / load would you recomend for Bear? Very nice gun control.A+ Job. Thanks-Tim

I use Kick-Eez magnum recoil pads on my hard recoiling rifles they are the absolute best available for absorbing/redistributing recoil.
CampCook12345 2 years ago
I have a standard Marlin 1895SS with pistol comb and 22 inch heavy barrel. I bought about 25 years ago. It is equiped with a leather sling, detachable swivels and williams peep sight. That is a very fast handling gun as well. With 300 grain factory loads it is mild in it's recoil. However, with if one were to use some real hot handloads, you would need a recoil pad. I used to use the rifle up in the Rangely lakes area of Maine to hunt with. My brother now uses it and won't give it back!

Upon a bear attack you shoot your buddy in the knee and then run like hell!
