5:00 for Dr. J's dunk. I absolutely love how Thompson does great, and then the Doctor comes and dominates with this absolutely massive dunk. The sound of the crowd too is beautiful.
DR J IS NOT the first person to dunk from the free throw line. WIlt Chamberlain is, and I have proof. No footage of him doing it, but video of Tex Winter, NBA HOF, invented the triangle offense saying he saw Wilt do it in person. he IS a credible source
Simply the single most important event in modern basketball history. Without this event the NBA would have been out of business before Magic, Bird and MJ ever came along.
People that bitch about the old contest being better need to have a look at all the video's in the past. The contest raises it's game almost every year and now we just take it for granted.
After watching Serge, Dr J, and Jordan. I would say Jordans first (the year he lost to wilkins) was most impressive. Serge was second cus his foot was on the line, like Jordans, but also consider Jordan is 6'6 and Ibaka is 6'10. Dr J's foot was beyond the line BUT, he had alot of air under him still and a whole hand in the rim. I think Dr J couldve pulled off that dunk from behind the line.
If 115 people need to 'thumbs-up' your comment to show that it was funny or sarcastic, that implies that many are uninformed and needed a recent video to inform them that, yeah, there was that contest back in 1976. On another note, if you're calling someone you've never met "fuckface", you probably need counseling in anger management.
Doc was nasty. Gilmore did the two-ball thing, and dock did it backwards...seven inches shorter. And after the foul-line dunk, the rest of the dunks were pointless.
he slammed 2 balls at the same time that didn't count? back to the basket standing under the hoop jumped off both feet at the same time. I guess thats easy? Or he just made it look easy. People he's 6'7 not 6'11' . If there is anyone who can do that right now anywhere show it. Just like the Doc did. no extra steps leap off both feet back to the basket stuff 2 basketballs. I'll check email for proof don't just bother me with I saw a guy one time in a park do it. no trampolines allowed
he slammed 2 balls at the same time that didn't count? back to the basket standing under the hoop jumped off both feet at the same time. I guess thats easy? Or he just made it look easy
bkobra, occasionally I make myself to just remember what it was like prior to when I could dunk the ball. Immediately after I followed the training course system at 50 inch vertical (dot) com - my skills has been increasing quickly - I'm no longer on the bench!
ABA 1976 Slam Dunk Contest part 2 of 2 mqybgtloevxokcl oyica #bkobra
This was cool. The only thing I didn't like was participation by Artis Gilmore. At 7'1" you don't belong in a dunk contest.
David Thompson , on the other hand, was awesome at 6'2". It is a shame he played college ball during the no dunk no three point shot era. As a Maryland fan I would see him at Cole Field House and he would always get around 38. With a 3 point line he would have had an additional 5 points per game.
Yo #VIDEOPOSTERID#, if you {want|would like|wish|really want} to develop in basketball, you have to start {following|sticking with} #RANDSETa {real|actual|genuine|authentic|serious|proper|legit} # workout plan. I used the nba training system here 50 inch vertical (dot) com. I haven t even told this to my college teammates yet lol
dude, outrageous high-lights. #VIDEOPOSTERID# I particularly like the middle =) Can you believe that I finally worked hard enough to start dunking! I just used the the nba exercise system at | 50 inch vertical [dot] com | and managed it in just 5 weeks
bkobra If you play bball at all, you need to take a look at this - 50 inch vertical (dot) com - It's a unique training program that will help you begin dunking and you don t even need to go to the local gym it's not required
bkobra, dam son that is OD. this is coming from a guy who s 5 5 but finish alley dunks. I used the dunk training program over at (50 inch vertical [dot] com) and increased past 13 ins on my vertical.
Damn David Thompson had some mad hops back in the day. Doc had some sick Dunks but The Sky walker man that was so sick . You know who else could dunk well Clyde Drexler man The ABA was so much better than the NBA at this point this shit was so ahead of its time
Dr J truly was the Master of the Dunk ! He brought the ABA into the NBA, as Namath brought the AFL to the NFL ... I remember I was the 1st kid in my school in '77 to have Dr J Converse All-Star BB shoes,, Those shoes were $38.00 in '77... Ah, those were the days ~~~~~
Doc and DT could have definitely been as good today as they were then. Hell, the craziness of the new dunkers may have pushed them to greater heights.
NO-FUCKIING WAY DT HAD A 48" VERT. NO FUCKING WAY!!!!! NATE FUCKS HIS SORRY-ASS-UP-IN-SPADES!!!!! PLEEEEEASE, DT''s hops were "WAAAAAY-OVERRATED!!!"""
1) Difference between now and then is the athleticism. The fact that the old guys were not as athletic makes it look boring today, but it WAS exciting for its time. 2) Gilmore was a better game dunker than in a slam dunk contest. He's wide open underneath in a game...look out! Same with Kenon. 3) Never knew why Gervin was selected. But that finger roll during warmups was worth seeing! 4) Everything's been already said about torch bearers Doc and David.
Bullshit jackass. David Thompson would have pwned these wannabe's now if he had played today. No one in the league now has the jumping ability or explosiveness that DP had.
Name calling not necessary. My comment was on the overall dunk contest and overal dunking scene back then. I already gave credit to "torch bearer...David".
David Thompson was always credited with having a ridiculous vertical, around 48 inches. Ive never seen any evidence of that. Even here, his 360 looked impressive but theres no way he got 4 feet off the ground on any of his dunks.
The Gilmore Boy wasn't all that skinny. I thought the amazing part (other than the take-off from the free throw line) was how AG managed to almost hide those basketballs in his hands.
There is just something so elegant about watching a dunk contest unlike the ridiculousness that is now shown during all-star week. I swear it's like I am watching WWE matches when I watch the dunk contest now.
some one tell me how at 5:45 Dr J took off from 7 feet diagonal to the rim CRADLES!! then GLIDES!! then PUMPS!! then REVERSES and then ends up all the way on the other side of the rim?
I'm a 16 year old kid and I think that todays slam dunk contest is all about props and what you do before and after the dunk, its not even about the dunk anymore!! But this year was so much better than last years.
This was the ABA and they were the first ones to DO a Slam Dunk Contest, as a way to draw attention to the league. Plus, notice that THEY had the 3-point line first.
its really annoying how u here every thing like 2 seconds before it happens.the croud always says "OOH!" or "AAH" right before they do the dunk!btw dr.j owned every 1 lol!
some things.... rims were NOT breakaway, limits what you can do without killing yourself - of course there was no hanging on the rim. all the players called it the "360" or "helicoptor" not "twist around". 2 of 4 aba teams absobed into nba made playoffs 1st season - including Denver.
People are asking why Gervin's in this contest, but he actually was a very good leaper. His rock the cradle dunk at 1:03 seconds was nice.

GERVIN IS AWESOME, but all the dunks look so simple, unlike the 2008 Slam Dunk Contest, where the Dunks are exciting...
