  • People are asking why Gervin's in this contest, but he actually was a very good leaper. His rock the cradle dunk at 1:03 seconds was nice.

  • The NBA can thank the ABA for the Slam Dunk Contest

  • Darrell Dawkins- "Chocolate Thunder", first player I ever saw break a backboard.

  • DAVIS TOMPSON WITH THE TWIST AROUND SLAM DUNK LOOOOOOL

  • Skywalker had some hops...Even by todays standards.

  • lol "twist-around" dunk. better name than the "360" in my opinion!

  • slam dunk inventor > wheel inventor

  • 5:00 for Dr. J's dunk. I absolutely love how Thompson does great, and then the Doctor comes and dominates with this absolutely massive dunk. The sound of the crowd too is beautiful.

  • DR J IS NOT the first person to dunk from the free throw line. WIlt Chamberlain is, and I have proof. No footage of him doing it, but video of Tex Winter, NBA HOF, invented the triangle offense saying he saw Wilt do it in person. he IS a credible source

  • @jongib369 he wasn't the first but he is the first to do it in a dunk contest.

  • Dr J is the original free throw line dunker

  • @korneytto no, he isn't. surprisingly

  • Dr j is the original free throw line dunker

  • Oooh David Thompson!!!.....Twist around slam dunk!!........this shit is so old.

  • Julius erving is the only one who made all of his dunks!

  • thanks for posting---good stuff

  • of course the winner is Dr J.

  • type "short guy dunks" in the youtube search box to see a 5'5 guy dunking a 10ft hoop

  • 5:25 to skip to dr. j's free throw line dunk

  • Simply the single most important event in modern basketball history. Without this event the NBA would have been out of business before Magic, Bird and MJ ever came along.

  • Doc could do things that Michael Jordan could only dream of.

  • @bangitslo lol?

  • People that bitch about the old contest being better need to have a look at all the video's in the past. The contest raises it's game almost every year and now we just take it for granted.

  • I LIKE DR J AFRO

  • at 5:13 u can hear everyone stirring as they realize what dr. j is gonna do.

  • 0:07 Best dunk by far

  • I'm here cuz i knew about Dr. J's dunk before Ibaka's.

  • I was there. I still have the program from that night. We sat on the end where David Thompson did his dunks...

  • Why are y'all comparing serge and dr. J..dr j dint have intentions on jumping from the free throw line, just wanted to be further then his competition

  • michaels was better.

  • imagine if Blake Griffin was there

  • @Ch1charitO14 He wouldn't win.

  • me and my friend were doing that haha boner?

  • thats why me and gay donny were here

  • Ibakas dunk should have got a 50 score and you all know it.

  • Dr. J was jealous of Serge Ibaka's FT line dunk. He did it on the first try and farther back than him.

  • @TheIceBoxLuv And Dr. J didn't intend to do it. He didn't even practice like Ibaka did.

  • t dub vs these beasts :D

  • After watching Serge, Dr J, and Jordan. I would say Jordans first (the year he lost to wilkins) was most impressive. Serge was second cus his foot was on the line, like Jordans, but also consider Jordan is 6'6 and Ibaka is 6'10. Dr J's foot was beyond the line BUT, he had alot of air under him still and a whole hand in the rim. I think Dr J couldve pulled off that dunk from behind the line.

  • Serge

  • Is it me or did Dr. J looked very jealous when Serge Ibaka dunked from the free throw line lastnight?

  • Serge Ibaka was better!

  • Serge Ibaka was here

  • thumbs up if you're here because of serge ibaka's dunk

  • @Dahead2head514 Did you seriously not fucking see this before last night?! Do you live under a fucking rock?

  • @MuffinManTF you're a fucking idiot. course i've seen it. i looked at it the other night to compare.

  • @Dahead2head514 Jesus, I hope so.

  • @Dahead2head514 your right i went here cause of ibakas dunk..i compared his dunk to erving's dunk!

  • @Dahead2head514

I'm "here" because I know what the ABA Dunk Contest was. Moron.

  • @americanaccents yeah same here fuckface. dont think youre smart because you know there was a 1976 dunk contest.

  • @Dahead2head514

If 115 people need to 'thumbs-up' your comment to show that it was funny or sarcastic, that implies that many are uninformed and needed a recent video to inform them that, yeah, there was that contest back in 1976. On another note, if you're calling someone you've never met "fuckface", you probably need counseling in anger management.

  • @americanaccents they most likely looked here to see more clearly where he took off and how it was approached. think a little bit, can you?

obviously you had the more aggressive tone in your comment before. maybe you need to stop saying stuff that makes no sense to a person on youtube.

  • @Dahead2head514 ibakas dunk wasnt even really good

  • @Dahead2head514 wow how did u know

  • just too many rules...pretty boring event actually

  • Where is Downtown "Funky Stuff" Malone and Jackie Moon?

  • Pause at 5:30

  • Doc was nasty. Gilmore did the two-ball thing, and dock did it backwards...seven inches shorter. And after the foul-line dunk, the rest of the dunks were pointless.

  • AMAZING!! DR J RULES

  • twist around slam dunk?! uhhh. good that the name changed

  • The way the crowd went crazy on some of those dunks i bet they were uncontrollably shitting themselves after Dr.J

  • @LyndsieFadden70984 plz share your technique i wanna know brother i'm 5'8 from b ball head too another plz share the wealth

  • Dr. J made the competition better with his dunks.

  • You know its a shame that the T.V. angles were only taken from above. We will never see how high Doc and David Thompson got off the ground.

  • Mandatory dunks... were the nazis running the contest?

  • lmaooo nice twist-a-round slam dunk

  • Dr J. was sick, but in my humble opinion, David Thompson should have won.

  • i love how at 5:12 you can hear the crowd winding up, cuz they know what's about to happen

  • Dr j effortless he won befor it started..

  • he slammed 2 balls at the same time that didn't count? back to the basket standing under the hoop jumped off both feet at the same time. I guess thats easy? Or he just made it look easy. People he's 6'7 not 6'11' . If there is anyone who can do that right now anywhere show it. Just like the Doc did. no extra steps leap off both feet back to the basket stuff 2 basketballs. I'll check email for proof don't just bother me with I saw a guy one time in a park do it. no trampolines allowed

  • he slammed 2 balls at the same time that didn't count? back to the basket standing under the hoop jumped off both feet at the same time. I guess thats easy? Or he just made it look easy

  • Semi-Pro!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the announcer is the best part of this video ahaha

  • i love how at 5:10 when he starts measuring from the foul line, you can hear the crowd building up "is he really gonna do that?!"

  • just like the NBA 2K codes says for the ABA..

    PAY RESPECT.

  • bkobra, occasionally I make myself to just remember what it was like prior to when I could dunk the ball. Immediately after I followed the training course system at 50 inch vertical (dot) com - my skills has been increasing quickly - I'm no longer on the bench!

ABA 1976 Slam Dunk Contest part 2 of 2 mqybgtloevxokcl oyica #bkobra

  • This was cool. The only thing I didn't like was participation by Artis Gilmore. At 7'1" you don't belong in a dunk contest.

David Thompson , on the other hand, was awesome at 6'2". It is a shame he played college ball during the no dunk no three point shot era. As a Maryland fan I would see him at Cole Field House and he would always get around 38. With a 3 point line he would have had an additional 5 points per game.

  • the free throw line dunk was sick 2!!

  • bkobra, I love basketball. I am simply 5'6 and I can dunk! I simply took the workout at "50inch vertical [dot] com" - you can probably do it too

  • lots of spectacular, power dunks before than now

  • Yo #VIDEOPOSTERID#, if you {want|would like|wish|really want} to develop in basketball, you have to start {following|sticking with} #RANDSETa {real|actual|genuine|authentic|serious|proper|legit} # workout plan. I used the nba training system here 50 inch vertical (dot) com. I haven t even told this to my college teammates yet lol

ABA 1976 Slam Dunk Contest part 2 of 2

  • @seanjory9020 - Stick your vertical training where the sun don't shine. We aren't talking about you!

  • dude, outrageous high-lights. #VIDEOPOSTERID# I particularly like the middle =) Can you believe that I finally worked hard enough to start dunking! I just used the the nba exercise system at | 50 inch vertical [dot] com | and managed it in just 5 weeks

ABA 1976 Slam Dunk Contest part 2 of 2

  • smooth with finess, body control

  • wow dr j was creative

  • bkobra If you play bball at all, you need to take a look at this - 50 inch vertical (dot) com - It's a unique training program that will help you begin dunking and you don t even need to go to the local gym it's not required

ABA 1976 Slam Dunk Contest part 2 of 2

  • Lets keep MJ out this discussion.

These guys our animals, straight finesse. The Dunk contests of today don't have shit on this.

  • "twist around slam dunk" LOL

wow, they were dumb back then...i would think they would have known thats one rotation in the air or a 360...

  • They were the first. They can call it whatever the hell they like.

  • ...4:15..... "twistaround slam dunk!".....uhhh....i'm not even gonna say anything about that one.... nevermind.

  • bkobra, dam son that is OD. this is coming from a guy who s 5 5 but finish alley dunks. I used the dunk training program over at (50 inch vertical [dot] com) and increased past 13 ins on my vertical.

ABA 1976 Slam Dunk Contest part 2 of 2

  • Damn David Thompson had some mad hops back in the day. Doc had some sick Dunks but The Sky walker man that was so sick . You know who else could dunk well Clyde Drexler man The ABA was so much better than the NBA at this point this shit was so ahead of its time

  • Dr J truly was the Master of the Dunk ! He brought the ABA into the NBA, as Namath brought the AFL to the NFL ... I remember I was the 1st kid in my school in '77 to have Dr J Converse All-Star BB shoes,, Those shoes were $38.00 in '77... Ah, those were the days ~~~~~

  • Julius Erving is the best dunker in the world

  • MJ was

  • Doc and DT could have definitely been as good today as they were then. Hell, the craziness of the new dunkers may have pushed them to greater heights.

  • The Iceman might've won it if it wasn't for the misses. His 360 Windmill looked nice.

  • Dr. J Killed it. HIs dunk at 6:07 was so sick!!!

  • DT should have won

  • @ Toddler He Should have really Won DT Man Holy Shit what a talent he was.

  • DT's 360 was great

  • Dr. J starts off with the FT line dunk, gotta love it.

  • NO-FUCKIING WAY DT HAD A 48" VERT. NO FUCKING WAY!!!!! NATE FUCKS HIS SORRY-ASS-UP-IN-SPADES!!!!! PLEEEEEASE, DT''s hops were "WAAAAAY-OVERRATED!!!"""

  • if David Thompson didnt miss one of his dunk, i think he would have won

  • 3:45 heroic dunk by DT

  • love the dunk from taking off from the foul line

  • david thompson's double pump 360 dunk is sick.....

  • not taking anything away from dr. j but george gervin's two failed attempts would've been spectacular.

  • Dr. J wins the contest hand-down!

  • first dunk on the foul line bitches

  • I did not know the ABA then had the three point line

  • the ABA invented the 3p line!

  • lol thw twist around slam dunk...i like it:P

  • 1) Difference between now and then is the athleticism. The fact that the old guys were not as athletic makes it look boring today, but it WAS exciting for its time. 2) Gilmore was a better game dunker than in a slam dunk contest. He's wide open underneath in a game...look out! Same with Kenon. 3) Never knew why Gervin was selected. But that finger roll during warmups was worth seeing! 4) Everything's been already said about torch bearers Doc and David.

  • Bullshit jackass. David Thompson would have pwned these wannabe's now if he had played today. No one in the league now has the jumping ability or explosiveness that DP had.

  • Name calling not necessary. My comment was on the overall dunk contest and overal dunking scene back then. I already gave credit to "torch bearer...David".

  • K i take back the name calling your right about the other's in the dunking contest like Gervin and Artis Gilmore. WTF is he doing there? LOL

  • Simmons!!!

  • Simmons

  • simmons

  • Simmons!

  • David Thompson was always credited with having a ridiculous vertical, around 48 inches. Ive never seen any evidence of that. Even here, his 360 looked impressive but theres no way he got 4 feet off the ground on any of his dunks.

  • Simmons!

  • from the free throw line!!!!!!!!

  • Simmons!

  • Intersesting that all the ABA teams represented in this part are still represented in the NBA today.

  • Simmons

  • who the fuck is Bill Simmons?

  • Simmons.

but isn't it amazing how skinny all these guys are

  • The Gilmore Boy wasn't all that skinny. I thought the amazing part (other than the take-off from the free throw line) was how AG managed to almost hide those basketballs in his hands.

  • There is just something so elegant about watching a dunk contest unlike the ridiculousness that is now shown during all-star week. I swear it's like I am watching WWE matches when I watch the dunk contest now.

  • Simmons you sand-bagging SOB, you did it again. Love how george pulls his shorts UP after every dunk. UP!? Seriously...

  • Simmons!

  • Simmons

  • Bill Simmons?

  • is will ferrell's harry caray impression announcing the contest??

  • "mine's the sun"

  • I like it cause its like the King of Planets.

  • Tie between Julis Ervin and David Thomas

  • 4:10

These days they have players who can do a two twist-around slam dunk.....lol

  • Comment removed

  • twist-around slam dunk? haa haa

  • LOL @ the announcer with no basketball terminology. Twist around slam dunk. BUAHAHAHAHA

  • Umm.. that's probably because these guys were the originators of such dunks and they weren't coined yet? Duh..

  • 2:02 lol pwnd

  • some one tell me how at 5:45 Dr J took off from 7 feet diagonal to the rim CRADLES!! then GLIDES!! then PUMPS!! then REVERSES and then ends up all the way on the other side of the rim?

  • look closely david Thompson allmost hitting his head on the rim !! when he dlble pumped at 3:45

  • 5:31 classic moment

  • Nobody better than DR J.

  • Dr. J was "Dyn-O-Mite!"

  • the ABA was innovative with the red, white blue ball, 3-point line, slam dunk contest

  • Dr. J's foul line dunk, in 1976, is like George Washington crossing the Delaware. With a machine gun.

  • david thompson should've won it..

  • Dr.j sent them all packing right after the foul line dunk. they were like "okay this is over cya"

  • I remember watching this on my moms couch.

    I was 12 years old.

  • me too

  • its like semi pro haha....except no one threw the ball up then forced it down through the hoop with a downward arching motion

  • haha double pop, twist around...

lol they make up wierd names for dunks lol

  • i liked erving last dunk!

  • I'm a 16 year old kid and I think that todays slam dunk contest is all about props and what you do before and after the dunk, its not even about the dunk anymore!! But this year was so much better than last years.

  • David Thompson was the best.

  • Damn, Dr J rocked the shit out of that contest, the 2 ball one was badass

  • TWIST AROUND SLAM DUNK! hahahaha

  • and that sends everyone reeling...JULIUS ERVING!

  • lmao @ twist around slam dunk

  • Haha! the commentator seems to be amazed of the most simple dunks! what more today...

  • If Thompson hadn't missed that 4th dunk, he might've pulled off the upset. His were more impressive than Erving's.

  • twist around slam dunk lol

  • LOL I know, they called a 360 dunk twist around slam dunk xDDD im cracking up laughing

  • they save the best for last dr j!!!!!!

  • David Thompson @ 6'4" had a 46" vertical leap! did'nt call him skywalker for nutin!

  • i met david thomson years ago he was talking about how drugs ruing his life

  • wow very beatufil video...

  • David thompson is a savage

  • the rules are too restricting

  • their dunks are too restricting...

  • GERVIN IS AWESOME, but all the dunks look so simple, unlike the 2008 Slam Dunk Contest, where the Dunks are exciting...

  • This was the ABA and they were the first ones to DO a Slam Dunk Contest, as a way to draw attention to the league. Plus, notice that THEY had the 3-point line first.

  • its really annoying how u here every thing like 2 seconds before it happens.the croud always says "OOH!" or "AAH" right before they do the dunk!btw dr.j owned every 1 lol!

  • they should bring back these rules to todays dunk contest.lol

  • some things.... rims were NOT breakaway, limits what you can do without killing yourself - of course there was no hanging on the rim. all the players called it the "360" or "helicoptor" not "twist around". 2 of 4 aba teams absobed into nba made playoffs 1st season - including Denver.
