This song is exactly what Christianity is all about. It's not about who did what in church or how good you are. It is about the love that Christ showed us and the love that we should show unto others. What many fail to realize is that Christ not only paid a physical suffering, but he took upon himself all of our guilt, shame, loneliness, depression, and broken heartedness. Now that, THAT is love.

The scripture that the lyrics quote is one of my favorites. It is Isaiah 53:5: "But He was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on Him; and by his wounds we are healed." I know that I am unworthy of His love and salvation but He laid it on me. And I am so thankful for that.

However, the historic Lutheran Church has used such hymnody since the Reformation, e.g. "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded" by Bernard of Clairvaux, ca. 11th c, "Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted" by Thomas Kelly, ca 19th c, "Upon the Cross Extended" by Paul Gerhardt, ca 17th c, "Jesus, Grant That Balm and Healing" by Johann Heermann, ca. 17th c, et cetera. BTW, the tunes are easier to sing.

It is too bad that you sir have only read what you want to read or have only read those who are against Luther. But let us get to the point, in 1543, Luther wrote a diatribe named "The Jews and their Lies", admittedly it is quite polemical to our 21st century ears, but Luther would do anything to protect the Gospel.

And Jesus Christ died for the sins of the Whole World, including non-believers and rose for the Worlds Justification, including non-believers, Objective Justification. Jesus helped me out when I needed and when I didn't. God is there to help us through everyday life and to help us through the hardest times in our lives. I still don't understand how we are healed by his stripes (jes53:5). I believe it, but when I try to understand with my mind I still don't know how. Even though it's terrible how they scourged Him, how is it equal to all the pain and sickness of every human being put together. Maybe it's because His life and blood was so incredibly precious to God that it is equal.
He took the punishment that all of mankind deserved. He not only took the physical abuse, he bore every sin of mankind, past, present and future. The agony of bearing all sin for mankind, was really worse than the physical pain He endured.
@wwl777 It's not the beating itself (stripes) that heals us. It's Christ's blood that atones (pays for) sin. Before Christ, people had to regularly sacrifice unblemished lambs to pay for sin, but Jesus, the "Lamb of God", eliminates this need. Only He is perfect, and therefore only His blood is able to pay for man's sin. The crucifixion was terrible, but the real punishment was Jesus' descending into hell, being separated from the Father and experiencing the real consequence of all our sin.

I've watches this video over and over, and it still doesn't fail to break me down into tears. It's just amazing how even though Jesus went through all this, He can still love us so much. That's the true definition of unconditional love.

You see we used to offer lambs and perfect animals on the altar to get our sins washed away. But Jesus became the lamb. He could have just sacrificed a perfect animal but I will mention the point above about God needing to suffer as a man. There are many reasons for God to do this. But ultimately the point is we need Jesus to take our punishment as a human, which we deserve for sinning.

God wants to redeem us, restore us and the world to himself, and he is good and loving. God is just- he does not let sin go unpunished. He is merciful- he took the punishment in our stead. Only if we believe that Jesus is God's son, and follow and obey him, can he accept us into his family and forgive us.

And 1st John say's you have an advocate with Father.When you do what you know is wrong according to His law which is written on your heart (your mind) and are convicted by it then maybe it's the Spirit Himself with the Word bringing you to repentance. I still don't understand how we are healed by his stripes (jes53:5). I believe it, but when I try to understand with my mind I still don't know how. Even though it's terrible how they scourged Him, how is it equal to all the pain and sickness of every human being put together. Maybe it's because His life and blood was so incredibly precious to God that it is equal.

@wwl777 It's not the beating itself (stripes) that heals us. It's Christ's blood that atones (pays for) sin. Before Christ, people had to regularly sacrifice unblemished lambs to pay for sin, but Jesus, the "Lamb of God", eliminates this need. Only He is perfect, and therefore only His blood is able to pay for man's sin. The crucifixion was terrible, but the real punishment was Jesus' descending into hell, being separated from the Father and experiencing the real consequence of all our sin.

Once you begin to see that it is your own sins that put the Savior on the cross, you will begin to see your sins as exceedingly sinful, it is only that when you begin to see how sinful you have truly been that you can understand what a great sacrifice it was that Jesus made for you and I. You see we used to offer lambs and perfect animals on the altar to get our sins washed away. But Jesus became the lamb. He could have just sacrificed a perfect animal but I will mention the point above about God needing to suffer as a man. There are many reasons for God to do this. But ultimately the point is we need Jesus to take our punishment as a human, which we deserve for sinning.

God wants to redeem us, restore us and the world to himself, and he is good and loving. God is just- he does not let sin go unpunished. He is merciful- he took the punishment in our stead. Only if we believe that Jesus is God's son, and follow and obey him, can he accept us into his family and forgive us.

He went to the cross knowing what He would pay, because of our sins we are the reason that He was placed upon the cross. it makes me cry thinking.... how a perfect man chose to go through this for me.... im not worthy to deserve to be saved... and he loves me enough to endure pain of the cross and the suffering before the cross... oh how i love you Jesus

@DaBeastWolf You don't sin willingly do you? (read Romans 7). And 1st John say's you have an advocate with Father.When you do what you know is wrong according to His law which is written on your heart (your mind) and are convicted by it then maybe it's the Spirit Himself with the Word bringing you to repentance. So just alway's remember the cross.
