It is not about "losing your religion" as it sounds. That is a metaphor. What he is saying is he is losing his hope of love. He wonders why love is evading him when he thinks he has done all he can. Now he is considering what he did wrong, "maybe I didnt say enough. Maybe I said to much." Plus he is confused, "I thought that I heard you laughing, I thought that I heard you sing.." He thought things were fine. REM is always about having something to say. Politics, love, etc.. The 'Nut.
