Ok, I've had several people tell me different areas to put my thumb for more distance, but i dont notice much of a difference in the placements. any tips?
Hey sportdisc I really enjoy watching your videos they are always helpful. Is there anyway that you can put up a video of someone explaining how to throw an understable, overstable and stable disc? In this video the pro talks about changing his throw depending on the disc, I was just wondering if he could explain how and what he changes when throwing an understable vs an overstable disc. Thanks for reading
from 2:40 to 3:40 is complete bs... I throw with that grip and like that sometimes depending on the shot and I can throw a 500ft hyzer on command. Coda hatfield throws like that and thats who I got it from. Coda can throw 650+ so i disagree
@osw330904 I agree the part about keeping the fingers right alongside the rim is somewhat bs it might create some drag but probably not that much. The part that is real bs is the fact that Matt states his avg drive is 350 and when he does a couple drives then the instructor goes "that's 75ft you gained buddy you gained", even though he drove like 310, and maybe a 330 after that. That's a loss of several ft, not a gain.
Well I believe that a fan grip is the way to go... Also what I call the mirror effect... your non throwing arm should "mirror" your throwing arm.. When you reach back try to point at the basket with your non throwing arm... Then drop your non throwing arm shoulder swing the nt arm down and power through.... This creates a huge momentum gain which in turn creates spin and speed... I throw 600+ in FL at sea level. I have won many state and world distance competitions...
He should have told that 3rd guy to be more fluid in his backswing....and not to hesitate so much at the start of his wind-up. All the things he said were good but if you are throwing a stable or overstable disc, which are MOST of the discs out there, you do NOT put your shoulders over the disc like you do for an understable, "flippy" disc. If you do, then you will throw a big ass 250 foot hyzer instead of a nice 400 foot slight S curve with a sweet fade
Disc golf started in the 70's. I can't wait for winter to be gone so that I can get out and try these techniques. I already throw 450" and I don't use the step so I'm hoping it will ad at least 30" more.
This was definitely awesome. I have added about 50 feet to my drive and I have also straightened it out quite a bit by finally learning to "S" my drive....I thank you...thank you....thank you....
there is some pretty good info here. looks like there was no wind to speak of. is there any comprehensive explanation of what effect the wind has on a disc?
@peterdavisable I started out forhand dominate. I started to develope the same problem. Try to keep the disc as flat as possible on your release. Almost like the outside edge is at a downwards angle on your release like your trying to get it to curve only right and keep your elbow tucked in a little bit. If you throw it really flat like that, it will start out straight, it will go a little left and then will come back right. It depends on what your throwing though.
@peterdavisable do you throw right forehand or left forehand? try letting the disc come out a little hyzered, and throw something a little more overstable, what do you throw?
i started backhand and could only get about 320 or so, i started throwing forehand and i throw around 450 consistantly, my personal best is a 513 forehand, i throw a 174 discraft force for max D and a 175 discraft nuke for more controlled shots but still good D
i gained 30 feet so far i was throwing 325 now its a little over 350 and getting better with my left arm !!! before i was running up normal and now im learning the backwards run up
Hello im Marty Peters. Lessons Individual, Group and clinics. Pros ,ams Beginners!! If your in my area or are willing to travel to me. I want to show you how to improve! You wont go away unhappy! To many people spend yrs trying to get better with little improvement!! Forehand ,Backhand,Putting and disc shot selection. Dont get left behind!!! polehole@hotmail contact me if you want to improve!
i've been lacking power and distance in my backhand drives and have been trying to unlock the secrets to better throws. i was starting to think it was the discs i use, and i throw a discraft esp xl, and elite z xpress, both of which are "long distance". i think this video may help, although i've tried the knuckle grip and completely lose control of my throws. it's a lot to work on but i think it all comes with practice. footwork and body movement is the most important factor, i think. taijutsu
They weren't all that bad too begin with lol. His tips probably did help in the long run though. My throw is very unique. Nobody I know throws like me, and I usually throw 400+ feet. Distance isn't everything though. Most courses are Par 3s, which means 300-400 feet holes. Approach and putting are more than 50% of disc golf. I don't how good they are at those things, but my guess is they need to work on that more than anything.
@youtah676 seriously? who put on the clinic? its written all over the beginning of the video, and if that wasnt enough, this is discraft's youtube channel
great advice, I took all his tips for technique and have added a ton of distance to my drive. improved my drives from an average of about 330 feet to over 400 feet in one day. now I'm getting birdie opportunities i never had before and even overthrowing some pins
pretty much the hand grip is....on your hand there is a line that connects from your pointer finger to your palm. that line is where you place your disc, and then you either can place all four fingers pad on the rim or have your pointer and pinky fingers pad on the rim and have your ring and middle fingers finger-tips be touching the rim. For me i use the four pads, because the 2&2 hurts my fingers
I've been playing for several years, but my average drive is still in the 250 foot range (seems like every person on the internet throws 350 feet, but i never see them at the courses :P ). I had some issues gripping the disc too hard, and the higher throw...changing to the lower throwing motion and fixing my grip has definitely made my throws more consistent, straighter, and w/ more spin for bigger "s" turns. Great Video! Thanks!
Marty Peters is my father, we go disc golfing alot, and when we are playing he tells me everything to do, like in this viedo. Yes, it is hard and may seem frustrating but it will help in the end.
im 16 and ive been playing disc for almost 2 years, everything marty said is absolutely correct. my avg. drive is right around 360 feet. i have the best tandem for discs, the discraft flash and discraft avenger. another small tip that marty didnt say. when your buying a disc try to go for the transparent(you can see through) ones. this not only looks cooler but this means they are made with elite Z plastic which means they usually last long and take less wear&tear
Sweet, I can't wait to give this a shot today. My drives suck horribly and tend to vary extremely. I go anywhere from ~175 feet to ~275 feet or so. I know I'm losing a lot of power in my throw. The hand grip is a little hard to see in the video.
@pickboy87 Just following up. So I tried these techniques today and I saw a nice improvement over my throw. I'm still learning the throw (it's a little wild/high at times), but it's definitely farther than before. I don't feel like I'm losing massive amounts of power each time I throw.
I watched this video about a month ago. I had about the same problems as the first guy and after adjusting to what he helped the first guy with I have gone from an average of about 325' within a month I'm now throwing anywhere between 400' to 450' on average. I've started practicing my driving on hole 8 at municapal in Moble,Al. Now when I practice driving on that hole people started just standing and and whatching me drive. It feels great
Totally cheesy ending, but I can't wait to try this out. I can drive about 320 but I play some courses with holes over 600 so I would like to get closer to 400 guess I'll find out in a few months when the weather warms up. Till then I'll just keep using the towel drill and working on that nice snap sound
Marty is such a cool guy. Played a tournament last week with my girlfriend, we ended up playing with MARTY PETERS. He spent half the day helping her gain about 50-75 feet on her drive. Great guy, fun to play with. Sickest putting I've seen in a while also.
Straight as in where you aimed or straight as in the disc tends to turn while flying? The latter will naturally happen when you start throwing harder.
The way that understable disc flatten out when you throw on a hyzer is the pop you put into your wrist. The harder the pop and the smoother the release the more likely you will actually make the disc straighten out. However, if you hyzer to much or dont have as much pop, your disc will fade left pretty quickly. The best thing to do is get your pop down throwing understable disc flat, then once you have a good snap and the discs start turning over slightly adjust the angle more towards hyzer.
been playing for a little over a year now with the fan grip, knew about the "power" grip but was to stupid to try it, until now. Just threw my valk and star wraith "softly" in a fieldish area at my work and they ever so softly glided about 200ft with little to no effort on my part, so I cant wait to go out to local course when I get off and put a little more power behind them and see what I can do. Awesome tips 5*!
wow first time seeing this... alls i can say is that im a stud... im the first guy.. in the blue shorts.. that year i got 79th at am nats this year i got 16th.. maybe the clinic helped....
I'm Dessard and I'll tell you that what he showed us really works. I've kept working on the angle of release and have really added 75 feet to my throw. Start low and release at a hard angle and the disc will lay out to a perfect S.
umm. well u can just try different angles. and which ever gives best result for givin disc is the best angle. i throw pulses and predators on a slight hyzer for the effect they get w/ those understable discs. but honestly no one's angle of release will be the same. so really its up to u to figure it out.
Cool video. I have been told by a lot of the older golfers at my course not to pull upwards but straight across the chest, and it always seemed counter intuitive to me. Well now I can just relax and go back to pulling the way I had been.
Yeah, same here. AND I'm also bending my wrist too much AND I'm not turning my back enough. I throw around 300-310 feet so here's hoping that this helps. Though it's 31 degrees Fahrenheit outside, so yeah.
I really want to go throw after watching this but it's dark out!
