@Greenhornet270 they did it was called the king cobra, the airacobra/kingcobra was a nightmare to work on for mechanics and because of the position of the engine block, the chances of a pilot surviving a forced landing was alot slimmer than a convential aircraft.
Russians flew at LOW Levels; the P-39 was a Great aircraft at that level; it COULD have been a GREAT fighter IF the USAAF hadnt taken OFF the Turbosupercharger...pure stupidity on their part.
WOW! I built a P-39 model of about that scale as a kid but you really take it up a notch!
Mine had US Markings, you really did nice by the Soviet ace. Maybe I should track down a couple kits and build a US/USSR tag team duo some time. I haven't done any modelling in a while and come to think of it I should.
But wow, excellent detail, especially in that scale! Good job!
Well, what you see here is a good kit, not neccesarily good model making ;)
Academy do make the best 1/72 scale p-39 money can buy. I'm not sure if they still do the american boxing, but the soviet one is only about £4-5. You could order american decals seperately if you want.
Whats more, it comes with optional parts to make the P-39N or P-39Q, gun pods, propellor cannon etc.
Although if you are returning after many years, I can recommend an accurate but much simpler P-39 kit by hobbyboss.
The Brits used letters while the Americans used numerals...Finns for example used BW 123 for their Brewster 339 and I would have assumed the Russians also used numerals else how would they know which plane was to be used by which pilot or squadron, etc. Not that important :)
As good now as the first time.. I still intend to get the HobbyBoss kit.. for comparison! Was up in the loft today, tidying up.. and found kits I had managed to forget I even had.. :P I must be mad!!
My dad saw them come through Canada on the way to Russia. He thought they were beautiful. Maybe the Russians were the only ones smart enough to identify and exploit the plane's potential.... kinda like Chennault with his P-40's.
Wow, I was planning to do a vid about that - found some newsreel footage about sending p-39's through Canada then Alaska to Russia. They had three routes apparently, one was definitely up through Iran ;)
very nice work..

I have made a 1/6th scale rc P-39 from Pine and fabric covering that runs off of a gas engine good little model though.

nice build and no registration numbers?

THanks, what did you mean by registration number?

Oh I understand now, yes Russians used the numbers. Yes it's slightly odd, but I suppose everyone knew him as the snake guy.

Talking of Finnish buffaloes, they carried a very nice prancing lynx insignia. Top fighter pilots and racing drivers the Finns.

Very nice! I have an R/C P-39 in my build Queue that will have the Red stars. I really enjoy how you research each plane.
Cheers! Mpp

I'm curious about the hobbyboss. Seems like one of their better kits :)

Excellent work once again! Great-looking aircraft. I know it's a re-load but I must have issed it the first time.

Cheers, It was from much earlier in my modeling career. I hope to make three more and paint 'em better!

Thanks, I'm quite a fan of this odd plane (3 more kits in my cupboard). Nobody liked it, or even had succees with it except the Russians ;)

Always liked the Airacobra because it had a door and three wheels! Oh and that zincy-green interior!
Nice little kit, Dave!
Worked on the A-Wing a little tonight, myself! :)
BradThunder 4 years ago
I got the interior colour all wrong with this (but I made it ages ago). Taxiing it around must have been like driving a car ;)
I have three more P-39 kits (which I hope to make to a higher standard) :)
Good luck on your A-wing I hope to see the final result soon!
