  • what have you done to attach the cymble to that foot pedal?

  • @ashc1153 I attached an LP bass drum hoop cowbell bracket to the rod holding the bass drum beater.

  • As a timpanist who has virtually no experience on other percussion instruments I'd say you could hit the timps a little further away from the edge. As to sticks I suppose you might have to get some double-ended ones, and practice flipping them round without dropping them. Dangerous, though!

Your interpretation was good - and inspiring to the rest of us!

  • very impressed! linear and clean...BRAVO

  • nice playing, but the timps sound like shit.

  • @shaolinkungfu666

LOL! Thanks? usually timps don't record well. It might have been my playing... who knows.

  • Thanks for all the constructive criticism. Note that the microphone used for this is from a camcorder and not say, a condenser mic. You are absolutely right, I should have worked out places to switch mallets... I was young and dumb. I don't see why placing the mallets on the head is so unfavorable? Did it make noise? Or is it some nit-picky aesthetic thing that you are into? Thanks for watching. Best wishes!

  • @linguamortua Where did you find the music for this?

  • @kyjb70 steveweissmusic . com

  • I hate the tone of the timpani. The percussiveness of the super-staccato mallets rob them of all pitch quality, rendering them nothing but giant floor toms. I realize this is supposed to be a solo piece. But, it'd sound a lot better with a dedicated timpanist with proper mallets. Or, even better, work in places to switch mallets. He's also using unfavorable technique by resting the mallets on the heads before the beginning.

All that aside, it was performed rather well. Good Job.

  • how did you set up your bass drum so that it hits a cymbal? thats awesome!

  • @TOTALITARIO999 I use a cowbell rod that clamps to the hoop, but put it on the bass drum beater rod instead. Then I used a boom stand pointing down so that the cymbal is on the way of the rod.

  • Damn fine work bro that's awesome nice!

    Am hitting replay great video...

  • @1greentoad Thank you very much!

  • wack

  • Great Job Mr!

  • @marvinrorenzu Thanks a lot!

  • Muy Buen Trabajo felicitaciones! toque este concierto hace mucho tiempo, y me alegra escucharlo nuevamente.

  • Muchisimas gracias!!! :)

  • Wow man, you're an AMAZING percussionist. One day I want to be as good as you =D

What was the instrument you played at 1:29?

  • Oh, that's a slapstick, or whip. I believe Milhaud called for fouet (which is french for whip I think LOL). Thanks for the compliments and for watching! Have a good one.

  • hey, what mallets was he using?

  • I was using Vic Firth Ultra Staccatos. with a super light grip and a custom gong mallet.

  • I'm doing this piece in symphonic band and found your video!!! nice job!!!!

  • Nice man! the castanet work was well done!

  • Thank you very much. Thanks for watching.

  • Grande! youtube: "Frammenti" music by Stefano Ottomano

  • Reaaly nice, Milhaud is a great composer and you are a great percussionist.

  • Muchísimas gracias por ver mi video! Saludos!

  • Bravissimo !!! dinamiche giuste..

  • Grazie!!!

  • Es una interpretación genial. En serio el ejemplo que das en el video anima para seguir tocando percusión y disfrutarla.

  • Muchisisismas gracias! Saludos desde California!

  • Thank you Joaquin,

I forgot how fun this (first ever written?) concerto for multiple percussion is! :)

    regards

    alex

  • Nice creative work. I had no idea that their are concertos for percussion. I am a woodwind player and live in a woodwind world, so this is very interesting to me. I like it.

  • Thank you very much for watching. Welcome to the percussion world : )

  • Bravissimo!

  • Ringraziarla per guardare! Avere un buono giorno!!!

  • I really appreciate the performance and of course the answer in italian

  • awesome performance of a great work of percussion literature, just one question for you, it seems like you have a kick drum down there with a cymbal, where is the cymbal coming from when you hit the kick drum

  • The cymbal is attached to a boom stand pointing down. There is a cowbell attachment rod for bass hoops hooked up to the bass drum beater at a 90-degree angle that consequently hits the cymbal whenever the bass drum is struck. You can see me removing it during the slow section of the concerto. Thanks for watching!

  • oh ok thats cool, for my junior recital I may do this piece, what do I need to set that mechanism up

  • is composer Milhaud or solist?

    Who is composer ?

    anyway, wonderful play !!

  • The composer is Darius Milhaud, the soloist is Joaquin Hernandez, Kris Carlisle is the piano accompanist.

  • Well, good for you.

  • shutup idiot

  • You probably suck, and your taking it out on him! Fuck You!

  • It is rather pathetic to see people attempt to tear people down just to make themselves feel good about their pathetic existence. I am a graduate student in percussion at Yale University and I think that this was not weak at all. What I do think is that you are a immature piece of shit who needs to start attempting to better himself and quit trying to being down others to your ignorance. Go to hell.

  • @anfran05 O you are so mature...

  • I really like your interpretation! I'm Juan Denari, a percussionist from Argentina, and I was wondering if you could send me the score as an attachment? Great playing and thanks for posting this!

  • Your really do have to admire Milhaud for his versatility, I mean, a drum concerto(!).

    Very interesting though.

  • That was awsome, what kind of snare, toms, timpani, gong, and other aux. stuff did you use.

  • I used 4 Walter Light Timps, Absolute maple snare and toms by Yamaha, Black Swamp triangle and tambourine, Danmar machine castanets, homemade slapstick, Sabian Hand Hammered 14" Crash, and 16" Viennese Crashes, Ludwig Bass Drum + 18" Sabian Suspended Cymbal, Paiste Gong, Ludwig Ratchet, old brake drum, and a Black Swamp woodblock... I think that's about it... thanks for watching :)

  • Hi! Thanks for posting this! It really helped me a lot when trying to figure out the set up. I don't like the set-up that was recommended by Milhaud...I like yours better. I took your set-up as a fundation to mine and I moved some instruments around to my convinience and personal taste-

Did you come up with this set-up?

    Take care!

    Pablo

  • Yes, I just figured I'd place the instruments so that they could all be accessible either by muscle memory or by peripheral sight. Plus positioning the music where the instruments were and reduced the score, so that I had minimal page turns.

  • Hey, nice job! I must ask...what sticks did you use for the drums and timps? I know Milhaud says to distinguish between them, but your version seems so much easier.

  • I used Vic Firth ultra staccattos all the way except at the end I used some custom mallet my teacher made and a gong mallet for one note I think.

  • Oh cool. Now how did you get the pedal bass drum and cymbal to sound together in time?

  • I used that LP cowbell mount that goes on the hoop of a bass drum. The exception was that I attached it to the beater rod on the bass pedal so that the action was the exact same as the bass drum, and then positioned a crash cymbal on a boom stand sideways. Just play with it, it's not a very complicated thing to do. You do have to take that rod once you get to the slow part of the concerto. The long rest gives you plenty of time to do this.

  • Hi i am playing this piece too.

can you explain the cymbal attachment part in detail? i dont quite understand how the cowbell mount work exactly.

    thanks

    nice job btw

  • Very Nice.

  • very nice bro!

    exeptional.

  • Thank you very much!

  • excelente!! sigue adelante..muchos exitos.. saludos desde Lima-Peru!!

  • Excellent performance!!! What are you doing now that your senior recital is behind you?

  • I am currently freelancing in Southern California, and am principal percussionist with the Golden State Pops Orchestra. Also, I am the percussion instructor at Yucaipa High School in Yucaipa, California. Thank you for watching.

  • Hi man, I really like your interpretation! Ive listened to a few recordings, bt none of them has the same energy yours has, great job! Im sam wilson, a percussionist from london england, and i was wondering if you could send me the score as an attachment? Im thinking about playing the piece next year. Thanks man, great playing!

  • Thanks for your kind words sam and thank you for watching. If you send me your e-mail address I will be more than glad to send you the perc. score.

  • great!

  • pretty cool...

  • i like normal drum kits more but this is realy cool to..

  • Why, thank you :) Thanks for watching.

  • Whats "normal", kid? A 4 timpani setting is something of a standard in percussion music. This is a piece composed by Darius Milhaud around ca. 1940, it's not about commercial drum set stuff ;-)

  • dude im a percussionist too but with no theory whatsoever...ive learned by ear ..do u have ne tips or recommend ne books at all???

  • What is it that you want to learn exactly? Private teachers can oftentimes guide you in the right path, let them tell you what books you need in order to learn what you want to learn. Good luck and thanks for watching :)

  • i wanna be an all around percussionist and you're welcome man good stuff

  • jgvj

  • Huh?

  • wer did u study? consrvtry ryt??? u sound very unque.

  • I studied at Cal State University San Bernardino. If you want the partiture e-mail me your actual e-mail so I can send it like an attachment.

  • that was cool- great job man.

  • Thank you very much :)

  • yap.

  • Wow, you're amazing

  • Oh, great job! :)

    I might consider trying this..

    -Adam

  • The hardest thing about it is the set up LOL. Thanks for watching.

  • u r amazing1

  • hey..can you send a copy of the scores to the_dog92@hotmail??thanks=)rock on and continue drumming man=))

  • hey do you have th score?? can you send me pls??? jemjazzer@yahoo. tnks

  • you at yahoo . com or something else?

  • yap. tenks for ur rply bro. can u send?

    tekns .

  • ne lan bu

  • im playing this for my senior solo. ive been looking for a video of it. thanks for this post. i only got it the other day so i still have a lot of work to do. heh.

  • If you have sibelius, I have a very easy simplified version of the percussion part that might help you play it a lot faster.

  • is it written easier so you dont have to read all the staffs at the same time?

  • yes, you only read two staves.

  • how would i be able to obtain that?

  • give me your e-mail, and I'll send you a zip file with the bitmap format of it. If you use windows it should be fairly easy to get it. Send me your e-mail address as a message here though if you want to keep yourself private.

  • hey bro u r great .. can you send me also the version u used in this perfmne ..?? also if u have piano it wll be great,,im going to use this for my senior rectl ... im from Philippines .. it iss hard to find here evn in intrnet//>> may God bless you>hope u wont mind ths>>>tnks a lot for this video

  • They sound fine to me, but it could be a possibility. The heads that were on were pretty old at the time and I had kind of a hard time fine tuning the heads before the recital, but I got them pretty close.

  • One last thing, the timpani seems sharp....may have to 2x check, buti could be wrong..lol...

  • Nice, you should try also Milhauds' concerto for marimba and vibraphone, one of the best:).

  • Hmm.. plastic heads. Ever tried natural? Goat is my fav...

  • Oh hell yeah timpani! I've been playing those things since 7th grade (am a senior in High School now) and I have to agree completely. Best instrument in the band *wink wink*

  • that was amazing. I was debating taking up the timpani, and you totally motivated me to do so. You probably have more talent than almost all the percussionists in my band together.

  • Thanks. That's really flattering. You should definetly take up the timps. They are the backbone of the orchestra and have some of the coolest licks. I know I had a lot of fun while playing them in school. I rarely play them nowadays since most of the gigs I get I play percussion (other than timps)or drumset.

  • Man you kick ass!

  • LOL Thank you very much. Thanks for watching.

  • Very cool :) I never could tune those things when I had to play them haha.
