did they not rehearse this together? they can't even start together... the violinist needs to stop doing his own thing and stay with han na.... wasn't great in the beginning but got better towards the end :)
I'm a violist who converted to cello because I had a much greater love of the cello than for the viola. Still, I don't think this duet works very well for cello, at least not the way it's written, because it makes the cello part murky and unclear. Han Na Chang, though a great cellist, is a sort of sloppy player, and that makes things worse in this particular version.
@sinfoniageek Agreed, I personally believe the violinist set a rather poor tempo in the first variation though the cellist brought the tempo to what it should be.
Also that violinist has balls but unfortunately can't match her technical ability. Too bad! Get Joshua Bell or someone in there and this thing will really go.
my most favourite bit was 6:38. the intense power at that bit really blew me away! i also really liked 2:23 and i also like how hanna kept on staring at the afro guy to keep up with him! i don`t know why people are bashing how they played this piece, i think it was spectacular!
Absolutely astonishing, such cello playing is possible at all. Privileged to be alive and able to listen to her incredible, magnificent cello playing. Composers may throw fastest passages at her. Will be met with lightening speed, crisp, fabulously articulated, rock-solid precision, unwavering, supremely confident playing. Her music comes from the depth of her soul and musical sensitivity, stormy, heroic, mournful, sweet, poetic, magical. Our souls bathe in miraculous sounds, colors of Han-Na.
at 6:33 you can see Chang's facial expression turn to TT haha... she's realizing she has to WATCH his bow in order to play in sync with him. the afro's got no class!
You can definetely distinguish who of the two is most talented... At 1:04 he's just reading it straight off the paper, no interpretation at all, like he feels undervalued because Han na is playing the next solo ....
yikes...they were not in sync with each other at all. Especially towards the end it looked like Han Na was desperately trying to make a connection with him but he was in his own world. Needlessly sloppy. btw, I love Han Na!
ooops...ok..it's not Itzhak Perlman...I think I've got the message..! Whoever he is, he's still very good and makes this duet an amazing performance to watch/hear. It will be interesting to know his name anyway...anyone know..?
@xbasket12x The 'artofcello' interpretation is quite sweet but it seems like more of a 'novelty excersise' for him...he is prescise. I think it is the feeling and passion in the piece that really comes through with the Chang/Perlman duet...there is more of a 'coversation' going on...a battle...a very mutual respect for each other...and it seems so apreciated by musicians and audience equally. For me, it is a duet like no other...i love listening and watching everytime...just my opinion.. ;-)
@sonicfreak12345 Itzhak Perlman is a very well known musician. Check out more of him here, there are many clips of him on youtube. He and Ha-na play this so sumblime... I'd have loved to have been in the audience that night...
At 5:06/5:07 there was an other cello who wants to play too! Am I right? It was just a note during the cello answer at the violin..... The violinist watch somewhere after the theme with such a "who was?" face...
AMAZING performance, beautiful communication between them especially at the end. i agree that the violinist needs some recognition too, he is really phenomenal!
i think the violinist should also be commended here. we should at least know his name. This is afterall a piece with a definite high level of technicality for both instruments, which was executed here with grace and beauty and a unique style.
the violinist actually messes up a couple times :P...was something wrong with the audio feed because they didn't start at the same time...amazing cellist aaanndd I find their interpretation interesting perhaps less romantic on the violinists end but mre than which was displayed in artofthecello's vid
@mburch1974 No actually, Handel composed the harpsichord suites, from which one of the movements was taken by Johan Halvorsen (Suite No. 7 6th movement to be exact) and arranged for a violin and a viola. Given the period Halvorsen lived in (1864-1935), I think this piece was intended to be played very Romantically.
Cellist was played very very well! She knows what she's doing. The violinist... Very out o tune the whole opening and didn't bring Hana in very well... Didn't like him at all.... Tried to hard to be virtuostic.
i think he plays the violin with character.. you see it looks apart of him..as well as Hanna Chang. i like his poof too!! loll...he plays it like a fantasy...try summin , watch it with out looking at it..just listen. Its so much more spectacular when you create your own mood. this piece is lovely..luv at 2:20 ma favv!!.
The BEST performance of Passacaglia for Violin and Cello in years. Cello phenom Han Na Chang is amazing. A picture perfect, wonderfully nuanced, superbly paced performance by both virtuosos.
bless the ppl who speak their mind on here. I was LOL for quite a while about "the gray fro, fat & shapeless body" bit... i admit to also making such snap judgements based on appearance!
i try not to say anything negative on youtube but that violinist really sucks. maybe he didn't have time to practice... ? this is so sad b/c hanna chang does such a nice job. with a better violinist, this could have been the best version of passacaglia.
LAWL the first thing i thought when i saw that guy was, "oo.. he doesnt look like he's going to play well" Why? the gray fro, the fat and shapeless body (most fat violinists have a certain shape to them), and a LAZINESS. absolutely no violinist should look lazy, since playing violin is all about not being lazy and of self-control. he just looks extremely unprofessional
that was a great performance! who is that violinist? Han-Na Changs cello is so bueatiful. she looks so relaxed. i wish i could play as well as she does.
Han-Na Chang's bow wrist is sooooooo awesome, as if her had was made of liquid! yet she still has so much control over her bow... i HAVE to learn from her! :D
What a fun piece, how the violin and cello play back and forth and intertwine with each other. And as usual, Ha-na Chang does a wonderful job (and the violinist too -- I just don't know him).
Wow. I think I like the cellist even more than Yo-Yo Ma now... The only thing I don't care too much for is her constipated facial expressions... Some presumptuous viewers (especially YouTubers) might say otherwise that, "she's not playing with any feelings or soul..." Screw that. Keep those funny faces in the water closet. ^_^
not the best performance i've seen of this piece, but definately the best cello playing i've ever seen. She plays so fiercely ,then so softly right after, her tone is always top notch and she does all this while still being visually apealing, bravo
This is actually a very difficult piece to synchronize & perform . And usually orchestra members get only about an hour to rehearse with the guest artist in most cases. So if that was the case here, I'd say their performance was quite good :) But I agree, there's just no excuse for the fro....
they either got the timing wrong at sum parts or the cellist couldnt keep up. Towards the middle they start too loose each other and u could tell by her facial expressions lol
I think that the seated violinist is smiling "sarcastically" b/c he was probably shocked that the performing violinist is hogging the stand! Note at the beginning (you have to watch closely in the 1st 2 seconds) that he had just moved the stand closer to him and and then gestured tp Chang as though he were asking if it were OK and she leaned way over before she nodded OK!
cellist looks like she's crapping herself at 5:35 other than that though its really good XD
