  • I want a coin operated boy then i would cry less becuase id hurt so much less

  • 2:55 pause here for amusing face :) <3

  • Amanda Palmer has said a million times this song is NOT about a dildo. Its about her inability to be satisfied with the flaws of average men, yet her frustrations with the concept of the perfect man.

  • 2:55 LOL!

  • lmao i love this song!

  • @CelestialPlatypus I suppose if you own it you could open it up and take the coins out. My brother has a gumball machine and I imagine that he doesn't just throw the coins away.

  • OMG she is amazing! =D I love this video! and this song!

  • (continued from before...) The verse that starts 'this bridge was written to make you feel smitten' suggests there is another that she wants deep down, who is imperfect like a real man, but she's become too 'bitter' and thinks that her new perfect partner is all she needs, yet he needs to 'convince' her otherwise.

That's my take on things, but hey, if you're good with the dildo meaning be my guest

  • I know the general consensus for the meaning of this song is a dildo, but how about looking at it from another angel?

From the verse that doesn't go along with the rest of the melody of the song, it sounds like, well, to me any way, that she has deluded herself into thinking that her current partner, who is perfect in every way except maybe for the fact that he is just too perfect, maybe to the point of lacking a personality or his own mind, is exactly what she wants after being hurt before...

  • boo for cutting out "Will you persist even after I bet you a billion dollars that I'll never love you."

  • why does this video have so few views?

  • This was the first song of theirs i heard, i love this song so much :) I can say i honestly relate to what she is saying. with both guys and girls.

  • @CelestialPlatypus they just dirty minded i can see where somebody could get the idea that shes talking about a dildo, but if you listen carefully and pay attention shes not talking about that at all. I HAD a friend that thought the same thing -_-

  • Thumbs up if you're here because you heard Coin Operate Goi :D

  • dildo

  • @tajhau Nasty

  • This is actually pretty sexist.

I mean imagine a man singing about a coin-operated girl, that would be really inappropriate.

  • @grafleinsdorf No its not sexist at all, your just taking it that way, why dont you actually listen to the song instead of judging it.

  • @grafleinsdorf actually its not. the song is about someone being hurt so much that they come up with an image of the perfect boy/girlfriend, whole will never hurt them or break their hearts, they want a real relationship, but they can't because they are too damaged from the others. Thats what this song is about. Its not sexist.

  • love this song

  • If you like this, I suggest you go to your local record/cd outlet and check out the Kurt Weill compolation "lost in the stars"

  • Love how this song has a second hidden meaning! :D

  • @AmyWineHouse90 and i was the only one who thaught that :D

  • @AmyWineHouse90 What is it? The second meaning of this song that is..

  • @MiZzRaNdOmGuRl well i heard the second meaning is that she is talking about a dildo but a lot say thats not true :P

  • @AmyWineHouse90 Oh.. ew... but makes sense haha. Thanks!

    Kourtni xx

  • I love the way she acts during all the videos, her expressions are great.

  • it is about a dildo lol. thats the whole point. sure it can please you in one way but it still doesnt satisfy a girls need for love.

  • @irishequalsme While I know this is old, I couldn't help but respond. It's actually *not* about a dildo, but about exactly as she says. A coin operated boy she can control that would never hurt her, and love her always. The song is basically from the PoV of a gal that's been hurt by too many men.

How can I say it's not? Because she said so herself it's not about a dildo in not only her music book, but at several of her shows. :D

  • @MasqueLeNuit ok......well thanks for clearing that up.

  • Gaga.

  • What exactly did she do to that poor coin operated boy in the bath???? But other than that I love this song.

  • Yeah. I thought it was about vibrators too.

  • I love this song. The part that always make me laugh is "All the other real, ones that I destroy." It just gets to me, not sure why...

  • her actions are great! they make the video imo.

  • shes hot without makeup

  • @elspoko although quite a lot people share that (including me back in the day) it's been denied by Amanda Palmer herself. Look it up at their FAQ, "it's not about dildos but about loneliness."

  • Her Eye brows. Are cool!

  • i have not heard this song in forever and the singers eyebrows are cool!

  • @CelestialPlatypus I don't think it's literally a public operated machine. I think it means an object that is easily turned on and off...

  • I love this song, it's so funny and with so many different meanings but the end of the video always makes me a bit sad, i don't know why.

The dresden dolls are so amazing, i am addicted.

  • @eilzomalzo kk Thanks ^^ i get it now =^_^=

  • this is so cute, but one question. is she on the wall when she is drawing up those plans?

  • My gf turned me on this song :))

  • 2:57 the face is very "Im innocent, how could you ever think Id do something like grab youre ass in the bathroom....kinda" XD

  • i'm in love with this song

  • @saveme018 That's my favorite part of the song. To me, it shows that she realizes what she's saying is a lie - that she really does want a "real" boy - even as she's saying it.

  • i don't get it

does she still love him by the end????

  • i love this song. talented people made this song

  • this video reminds me of this manga(absolute boyfriend), they're both cute and disturbing.

  • elspoko is right... the whole song is about how guys can't please her at the same level as her 'coin opperated boy' ....

  • hmmmm this song or the dirty song what one is more strange?

  • Corn-y! :D

  • Dont we all want our own coin operated boy???

  • CrippledRetardo <---that's your username, and you expect people to agree with your opinion about Amanda Palmer?

  • Fucking magnets, how do they work?

  • 2:29 I love it when brian wrinkles his nose XD

  • Amazing!!! Brilliant!! and exactly what I want! Sexy, happy, imaginative, unique, and emotionally thrilling!! Wonderful ((Clapping))

  • 2:56 HILARITY XD

  • people. come on. shes not wanting sex. She wants a man thats not going to betray her. listen to the lyrics..

  • I LOVE the little tune at the beginning

  • Her eye brows Rock!

  • I love this song. Thanks to my freind i cant stop listening to it cause she wouldnt stop playing it haha. Love it

  • COOL!!!!!!

  • This song reminds me of Connie Francis' Robot Man.

  • although I'm sure a vibrator is the natural immediate interpretation of this song - it's really not. A mechanical boy who does everything she needs without the possibility of hurting her emotionally or doing the "wrong" thing. She wishes she could just build the perfect guy for her who would do all these things, but the reality is that we have to deal with human weaknesses in relationships all the time, it's just part of love. But it WOULD be nice not to get hurt.

  • people listen this is not about a dildo okay it seems as though its about the perfect and or ideal relationship sorry its not about a sex toy i know yo wish it was but its not maybe if you looked behing the meaning and symbolism in songs you would actualy know what there about

  • i thought this song was about a vibrator lol

  • Holy shit that was cool. I've never heard anything by them before but now I have to check them out

  • my mum figured out the begining on piano

  • Haha up the butt X)

  • well she said that this song is about loneliness, but what does a woman do when shes lonely?;>

  • @bomko Eat ice cream and meet internet friends?

  • The singer is so... real. You can tell she doesn't edit her voice :)

  • AAAAAMAZING

  • shes got cool eye brows!

  • @demyx44sora She shaved them off and draws them on. Pretty cool!

  • @Funkyfunkers35 i know, and they look cool! her eyes are cool too, i know there probably contacts but there cool!

  • I love at 2:30 when she's drawing on the wall

  • i love this song!!

  • I thought it represented how women want love instantly, a man that can always please them and does what they say, but as it goes on she gets disappointed in the same old thing, women typically have a harder time making up their minds and when you get bored, your stuck, you've set yourself up and you fall into the same routine. I think it's a play on fantasy as well, fantasy is never is as good as it can be, there's no variation, no experiences or surprises, you always know what's going to happen

  • I love Amanda Palmer. she so awesome.. and so is this song

  • I love this group. They're so unique, they have style, and they're not normal. That's entertainment. :D

  • i would love a coin operated boy. Heaven knows they're better then have the scum bag men on this earth >.> Go for the gentleman ladies! Hopefully natural selection will see that men who just want sex don't make good mates!

  • i absolutely love her....

  • She is so purrty :) And musically AMAZING!

  • Interesting take on loneliness. True love or infatuation can not be created, and to the same extent, the need to feel and be wanted is always felt despite a persons desperate attempts to replace it with something else. Much deeper than is on the surface.

  • I don't think that she's the type to "beat around the bush" (pun NOT intended). If she wanted to do a song about vibrators/dildos, she would just do it. Her music has seemed pretty straightforward to me.

  • 2:51 favorite part hahaha xD her face is priceless

  • YES I AGREE!!! its a song about didlo

  • mah coin-operated BOI

  • i love this song and all of her songs sence i was 2 and today im 10

  • yay coin operated boys

    automatic joy

    <3

    samantha

  • it such a cute song ^-^

  • its not about dildos and vibrators, its about loneliness and heart break, had her heart broken so many times she wants a robot operated by coins to love her and hold her, simple, but if dildos float ya boat so be it...

  • i have to do a dance to this song. and the version that we have is way better.

  • 2:55 to 2:57 lololol

  • My friend suggested this & I like it ~ I digg the different~

  • This is great,Love this song!

  • the scene with "I can even take him in the bath" is my favorite. Her face is epic :3

  • its been forever since i heard this.

i got my coin operated boy =-)

  • did he become a real boy at the end?

  • What an adorably quirky song! Yet it also has a universal theme about loneliness. That is one of my favorite things about The Dresden Dolls-They know how to speak to their listener without cramming a message down their throats.

  • @HorrorHippie33 lol i totally agree. I cant stop listening to it. haha

  • @HorrorHippie33 That last sentence is what she said.

  • @HorrorHippie33 and they make it catchy! :D

  • hmm, when i heard "that's how a boy should feel/ can even take it in the bath" i thought this song was talking about a vibrator :0

  • Good call thebowiesfrommars, I agree. If you've ever seen it live that reads very quickly.

  • mmm, this is nnot the "original" song i heard some years ago, it seems like they have edited some parts of the lyrics

  • really good song

  • I truly love this song.

    Can I borrow a nickel?

  • I've always loved this song. The lyrics are very appropriate and correspond well with the concept. Heh. Thank God that I have my own "Coin Operated Boy".

  • Actually, it is about a heterosexual relationship, so I don't see your reasoning.

  • I was under the impression that the whole song was an ode to vibrators/dildos.

  • Wrong and common impression.

  • I think it's just about being really lonely in general. Apparently Amanda Palmer's boyfriend that she had in college died, and the scene in the video where the boy is waiting at the gate then leaves, it definately adds to the idea that the girl is just scared of being hurt and losing someone again, so she wishes for a "Coin Operated" Boy that will never leave her or hurt her.

  • @elspoko You have a coin-operated dildo?!

  • @elspoko The one way you can tell that it isnn't about dildos is that you have never had a dildo in your life (that I know) tell you that they "love you" and that they are "thinking of you".

  • @elspoko

lmao!!! what in the world gave you that idea?? xD

  • @TakaraSatan Well, the whole song is about a mechanical boy who pleases her all the time. Someone she can just turn him on and he does is duty without hurting her emotionally. Well, for a human that would be impossible. What else could a woman have that does all of the above? A vibrator. A vibrator is nothing but a mechanical penis, and a penis represents a boy.

  • @elspoko i thought so too but in my opinion it seems like shes talking about how she rather choose fantasy love over real love D:

  • @elspoko Ew sick!

  • @elspoko

    yes

  • @elspoko me too! i wasnt even trying, it just REEALLY seems that shes implying that

  • @elspoko hahah that made me laugh

  • @elspoko ahahah! thats funny i can see why now that i actually think about it!

  • @elspoko could be the irony of men wanting a sexdoll in women?

  • @nyxmaroercheostrea Could be the irony that men and women both want the same thing because they are both the same?

  • @elspoko good point I think the same, people talk about the women and men psyche differences while I think they are way too similar but stereotype thinking leads to this differentiation of what has the same motivations and vectors

  • @elspoko Well, I would be inclined to believe so too if she hadn't said it wasn't about that. Knowing her style, I'm pretty sure she'd just say, "Yeah, it's about dildos," if that were really the case.

  • @elspoko Yes, it is :)

  • amanda palamer wooooooooow

  • I love this song ^.^

  • Happy for Amanda and Neil.

  • Wy?

  • She and Neil Gaiman became engaged.
