Brann Dailor's drumming in this song is just so mind blowing. Not like it wasn't already lol but seriously trying to tab out the drums in Guitar Pro is just plain impossible with this song
@blooddumpster3427 you just blew my fucking mind. i just put that as my facebook status. everyone gets so wound up over labels and i could never quite fit my fav. bands into one (Le mastodon). thank you lol
It's funny though, as the years go on and riffs keep getting thought up, copyrighted, and become obsolete, metal has to become increasingly weird and unusual in order to stay unique.
One day music's gonna be so fucked up we won't be able to wrap our heads around it.
@Spjungen That's probably one of their main influences, but they're mainly sludge/prog metal in their first 3 albums. Fourth album, they went super proggy, almost losing the sludge sound, and now with The Hunter, they went with a "traditional" metal sound, only mixing it in with their crazy and weird riffage.
@Spjungen Brann Dailor (the drummer) was originally a Jazz drummer. He doesn't play to the bass but to the guitar. That is one of the main reasons for the odd sound and rhythm. I love this band. They stay interesting to me. To say they aren't impressive in a way or that they have no melody is just ignorance in its highest form. The originality is impressive and so is the talent. Listen to more then one song by them....you can't judge them by just one song believe me.
@Sublime333X nah that woud be some space shit just like the first part with vocals and progressing powerchords.....still didnt figure out how the hell these guys cme up with this shit and all..
Iron Maiden was my favourite band in 10 years. I started to listen to Mastodon a month ago, and now is they my new favourite band, thats's fucking incredible. Everybody is always seeking for the "perfect" music, personally I think i have found it. I can't tell with words how majestic and awesome Mastodon is. I more than love them!
I love Mastodon. They really know how to leave an imprint on metal history with each album they make. I have The Hunter will do just the same, considering how Deathbound sounds. It's like a mix of Blood Mountain vocals with intricate and weird but fucking heavy guitar riffs like Remission. Can't fucking wait for them and RHCP's new stuff!
i think telling people to just listen to the music and stop arguing is more annoying than the people arguing its self. just ignore them who gives a shit really??
this is by far their craziest song when it comes to timing. Continuous switching between 6/4 & 4/4 is nuts when you have such crazy drumming going on.
I can't believe the 5 pages i've just read. I think in a way everyone involved in that argument is right to some degree. To me metal is metal, but you just have good and bad. You can have two bands that are both called "sludge metal", but you may love the one and hate the other. I like all types of different sounding rock music, wishbone ash's argus album is one of my all time favourites, to me no one else sounds like them, even bands in the same "genre". See what I mean?
Guys, why should it make a difference what you're 'labled' as? You could be hench gangsters for all I care as long as you listen to good music it's all good!
@Vanalos, I'm glad you finally got on board. Mastodon are Technical/Groove/Progressive. Know your'e genres. So don't talk about things you don't understand.
@ourworldsatwar Who the fuck cares what genre it is. Its awesome music. Now why don't you go comment on some post-progressive-veggie core music you genre junky queer.
@grahamzandah, I care you fuckin' cocksucker. Can't have poser idiots who listen to Flogging Molly & Bloodhound Gang involved in this kind of music. Now please fuck off & mind your business & not in that specific order.
@ourworldsatwar Haha how old are you? Like twelve? I've probably forgotten more about music than you know. Its stupid to label music into one genre. Its all way too different. Mastodon would be ashamed to have a fan like you. They would cut you up with linoleum knife. There is definitely a poser here, but its not me.
You said: "There is definitely a poser here, but its not me."
Yeah, it's your mom.
......& yes I'm 12....according to you. I'll leave it all in your hands seeing as though you think Tito Puente & Mastodon are a part of the same genre. That "linoleum knife" reference proves you're the true poser.
By the way, I watched the videos you uploaded.......yeah, you suck. :)
@ourworldsatwar Haha alright buddy. You caught me, I'm the poser. I've only been listening to Mastodon for five years and seen them live. I've never been in any mosh pits, whether I'm seeing KSE or Flogging Molly. You definitely caught me ; ). I'm not the one arguing about what overly specific genre Mastodon is. Like I said before, who gives a shit what genre it is. Its awesome whether its Grindcore or Neoclassical crust.
@ourworldsatwar How did I lose? By not acting like I'm twelve? I just think its incredibly lame and immature to categorize music into genres that are THAT specific. Whats wrong with my point of view? Obviously there are different types of music such as metal, country, and jazz. But the way I see it, there is no such thing as post progressive jazzcore. Oh, and I'd rather not listen to Converge...they kinda suck :/
@grahamzandah, Oh, I agree. There definitely isn't a thing called "post progressive jazzcore" however they're subgenres within genres. For instance, Extreme metal encompasses Black Metal, Thrash/Speed Metal, Death & Doom Metal. When the labeling gets convoluted into genres some teenager created, then it's pointless.
Mastodon are very hard to categorize but they do have 1.) Technical 2.) Progressive 3.) Sludge metal sound to them & are quite Extreme Metal. At least the first two records :)
@ourworldsatwar Or Mastodon is just really sweet music and should be enjoyed by all. Its metal/rock. Beyond that, who gives a fuck? Cuz I sure as hell don't.
Well good, so stop commenting & let Valanos & I debate it out. Three's a crowd, ya know. ESPECIALLY..in a debate.
Mastodon are Groove Metal ultimately. Way better Groove than that shit band Pantera. They're barely rock. Rock is the shit that gets played on the radio & has the verse-chorus-verse format/structure. This is too advanced for obviously because you'd hear it on the radio. That is all. :)
@ourworldsatwar course youre NOT right as i said i merely listen to metal and i really think theyre the weirdest band i know..different tastes dont meant anything to you? and besides germany is much more a metal country than usa or where you are from (wacken?! summer breeze??) stop spamming youre stupid shit here and criticize other peoples opinions, someone listening to metal and talking like you..glad i dont now anybody like you cause metal is tolerant youre not
@Vanalos, Metal isn't tolerant at all. Most musicians hate posers & hipsters & you would get insulted if you said something like "Mastodon is weird" to a "real" metalhead.
You claim to know more about metal because of your location as if the internet, fanzines, magazines, cds don't exist & travel across the Atlantic. Let me ask you, if you know more than I do, have you heard of Nox Intempesta? If so, what style of Metal do they play?
@ourworldsatwar My god you're ignorant. Anyone who has to constantly label music to like it doesn't actually listen to it. You should try looking past the music into what they're actually playing and writing about. I leave you with that. Have fun sucking the life out of the genre you try so desperately to protect :D
Well that's complete bullshit. I play in three different bands. Mastodon is one of the many bands that influenced me on guitar next to Incantation, Immolation, Massacra & Slayer. Genre labeling is most important because metal is the only genre of music that actually uses technical skill. You have to separate it from poser rock, emo pop & hipster bullshit. A lot of hipster idiots listen to Mastodon for the hipster appeal they have which I loathe. I want to ween those fags off.
@ourworldsatwar How good the bands were had nothing to do with my last comment. How much of a metal head you are has nothing to do with how many fake genres you know, how man fan magazines you read, or how many underground bands you listen to. Its all about how much you enjoy the music. By labeling and arguing like you guys are it takes the fun out of it. Now stop acting like pussies and go jump in a mosh pit and enjoy yourselves instead of continuing this useless banter.
@grahamzandah, Look I'm done here. Hopefully, one day you'll come to understand that labels are important & necessary in metal to separate it from Kate Perry & pop music like "hair metal".
@grahamzandah *snickering* How exactly are you gonna do that? xD
Also, I just read through the ENTIRE arguement/debate/comment war between you, ourworldsatwar, and multiple others, and I'll say this: Even though, yes, I do agree with your statement that genres shouldn't really matter if you enjoy the music, the fact remains that, without genres to organize the staggering amount of music made over the years, you wouldn't find ANYTHING you were looking for, because it'd be a CATASTOPHIC MESS!!
@SEnigmaProductions Yes, but small genre classifications can take care of that easily. Such as metalcore, hardcore, sludge, etc. There is no need to label genres as explicitly as many people do. I call that being a "genre junky" haha. Why is there any need to call Mastodon post-progressive neoclassical sludge grind metal? Can't you just call them progressive metal? haha
@grahamzandah Just because they're too good to be pigeonholed into one genre. They technically "post-progressive neoclassical sludge grind metal" but I & other metalheads can settle for "technical, progressive groove metal" as the Metal Archives has it. That's sounds about right.
@willabema um, just a question, hav eyou ever heard of jazz? Or maybe classical music in itself? Just asking. That might have been the most ignorant, hell, ignant thing I've ever heard said, especially since a number of metal bands subscribe to the "chugga chugga chugga, meedly meedly" school of music, which isn't really all that technical so much as hackneyed and boring.
@ourworldsatwar Damn, Pantera is "barely rock."? What world are you living in? Automatically deeming all music on the radio shit. This may be a shocker, but I've heard Mastodon on the radio before. And what played after that? A shitty Offspring song. Sure, many bands on there do suck, but to call Pantera "barely rock" is flat-out stupid. Yeah, same old generic rock. Throw Pantera into the same pit as Nickleback, why don't you?
@ourworldsatwar i think i understand much more about metal than you..stop flaming other people because of their opinion or go listening some rap thats for people like you
@Vanalos, It's so odd you know more about metal but claim Mastodon to be the weirdest band you know? It could be possible that you're a poser who knows about it (because you live in Germany) but just doesn't listen to it hardly ever. Amirite? :)
