I do own both the Nikon D3x and the Canon 1Ds Mark 3. Check-out my flickr account. In the real world of photography, forget the DXO charts; there is no visual difference between the 2 cameras when viewing the images at 100% crop. In fact, several stock-photography studios own analysis favored the Canon for slightly sharper and cleaner images especially above 800 ISO. However, it’s rarely ever about the gear, it all comes down to the individual behind the viewfinder.

if its image quality you are all arguing about, check out DxO ratings. it is an unbaised rating of camera sensors. nikon d3x wins hands down. also nikon has a 1992 ISO rating while the canon has 1663. not to mention ergomonics, focusing system, lcd resolution, and not to mention the obvious 3.4 MP difference in resolution. there are a few canons which have a superior image quality to nikon and vice versa. in this case, nikon owns canon by a decent margin.

Was there ever any doubt the Nikon was superior? FACT: The Nikon F-mount IS the most successful SLR / DSLR system in history. In the Canon A1 days Canon made a fine camera, I still use a Canon A1 from time to time. The modern Canon's feel cheap and have a poor lens selection with marginal lens quality.

I started off with the nikon F2 back when i was 10. Im 32 now and nikon to me is still top. I hear about features and junk I honestly don't use much. it comes down to what is easy for you as a person. Features mean nothing if you don't use them. It really comes down to the eye and the understanding you have of light. give me a cheap point and shoot and I can produce a great photo. Canon and nikon are both amazing. The same does not hold true for all "photographers".

I believe Nikon took it's time, even to the point where many thought Nikon was done, to leverage and master its manual-to-digital process. Nikon ruled and outdid Canon in the manual camera era, but Canon had a good jump into the digital. Once Nikon leveraged all its traditional manual technologies with the digital world, Canon was going to have a hard time competing.

And this is what's happening. Based on internal information coming out of Nikon over the years, I knew this was their plane. Nikon's digital process is on such level that it can pretty much dominate Canon in the digital era just as it did in the manual era. That's of cause until Canon responds back with some mind numbing, long term stuff that would send Nikon running around like a chicken without a head. Let's wait and see.

Currently though, Nikon is back in the driver seat.

Nikon wins award for its ENTRY level dslr's. why is this? ergos ergos ergos. canon is put to shame compared to nikons engonomics because nikon has many quick access easy buttons. but take a look at canons image quality. the rebel xsi is equal or better than the d90 and they are in totally different classes. neither brand is better than the other. i stick with canon because of better customer service and better lens choices (canon has 4 '70-200' lenses vs nikons 1)

Quality on Nikon cameras are super awesome. And yes, Nikon only makes an f/2,8 version of the 7-200mm lens and is obviously aimed for professional use. Nikon's lenses are also more fully compatible with Nikon's cameras. Personally, I also believe Nikon makes better lenses than Canon and I'm not the only who sees this. Many in-depth reviews and comparisons back this up. Added to all this, I think what you're mistaking for quality is varieties of texture rendering. For instance:

Canon tends to shift it's texture optimizations towards "pores" when photographing humans (pores photography). Nikon tends to shift it texure optizations more towards the what medium format camera do (smoothness of detail) and less emphasis on extreme pores by default. Now if you want to focus primarily on pores photography, you can adjust your Nikon for that. Canons focus on pores a lot right out the box. People usually mistake this for more less quality.

Nikon's mid-prosumer and lower end camera do lots of pores photography by default, starting with the D90 and down. The D40 and D60 are tuned to do lots of pores photography by default too and easily match any Canon in doing pores shots.

i recommend the d90 if you go nikon. i REALLY recommend the d300 if you can afford it. otherwise i recommend the 40d. DO NOT BUY THE 50d it's the same thing with more resolution and a better LCD. the LCD is sweet but because of the resolution on such a small sensor, you have a lot of noise and red fringing on the corners. it is pretty bad in that regard

this is because canon hands out their products and sponsors people so readily. As far as the debate.. both are good. Personally, I have had Nikon and Canon and Oly dslr's. Oly is cheaply priced and small and light and has the best live view in my opinion. But the canon and Nikon outperform it always. I love the way the Nikon feels. It's just about preference. just pick one and stick with it, collecting lenses and upgrading bodies.

Most pro photographers looking at cameras like the 5D don't really want video anyway. It's nice to have but it's not necessary by any means. The Nikon D700 is an even better camera than the 5DII IMO, for a bit less cash.

D3X is the same thing as the 3D exceot with more pixels and a few more options. If you not doing landscape or something to that effect...then don't spend 8K for the Nikon or the Mark Ds III...The D3 is a great camera and the Mark III. I prefer the D3 and Nikon's lens.....
