@TFZ14 Not too bad. Just dirty with a lot of tumbleweeds stuck under the truck. It did short out the cooling fan relay but other then that, it was fine.
@lionsforlyons I was driving north out of Quinter. I did stop before the video started (its in the raw footage) and looked to see if anything was to my west and it was not until the wedge formed and I got out of the way in time.
The monologue in this video makes up for all the stupid yelling typical of so many chase videos. Absolute silence for most of the time, with a simple, "I'm about to get hit by a fucking wedge." CLASSIC!
@bnvn1 Doug, this cell actually dropped a large cone just south of I70 first. Then lifted until north of town & then dropped your elephant trunk & wedge. We saw the cone lift & chose to wait along I70 for another cell to the south. This later storm dropped Quinter 4 & luckily took a left & went between Quinter & Park to the west. My buddy Colt & I filmed this wedge (which I assume everyone names #2 for wedge 2) entirely from I70. I still come back to this vid! Great stuff man.
@2200Z The second storm is being called Quinter but is actually closer to Park, KS from what I remember.
We followed the first system as it was dropping stuff south of town then went back up and went north of town and then formed three tornadoes north of town. The first one is the one that causes the power flashes when it hits the power lines. It falls apart then another drops the big pipe and that falls apart then I stop in fear of hail and see the wedge to my west.
Wow, I don't think you realize how close you were to getting killed by what was obviously at least a strong F3, if not a mid level F4 wedge. You were in the wrong position to be chasing it, parallel and to the right, you were by yourself, so you had no one to watch it closely in case it turns........and then you pull over next to the power lines. Any chaser knows supercells and tornadoes like to make right turns. I would've continued backing up, in case it wrapped a satellite around.
This guy is my freakin' hero. I'm hate to speak ill of other chasers, but I'd take this guy's sparse, understated commentary over Reed Timmer's hysterical ravings any day.
Sorry, Reed. I admire you for being in the right place at the right time so often, but when you start freaking out and screaming, I just wanna' slap you like everybody lined up to smack that lady in the movie "Airplane!"
@MrIndependent06 He did the right thing by not freakin out, it's much easier to escape. When I had the Wakita tornado bearing down on me, I kept my cool. I went a few hundred yards to my north, let the tornado go by, then I went south to escape the hail core that was coming my way. I got hit by three hail stones, but if I had stayed in my escape spot that was to the north of the tornado's path, it would have been a barrage of hail stones clobbering me.
In the cover of the tornado they should have launched an ICBM from Silo 17 there in Quinter only yards off a surface road there not to far from where your from. At least the people there would have not seen it.
Mistake 1: Going out chasing storms by himself. Mistake 2: Placing himself in the damage path of a fast-growing wedge that he could clearly see was about to double back. Mistake 3: Driving along downed powerlines. Tornado or no, tropical storm-force winds are enough to kill when they're whipping around live lines as they were in this video. Needless to say, this dude was extremely lucky. I was just waiting for him to get electrocuted.
Thanks for doing what you do. Risking your life for knowledge of these terrible killers.
I am scared to death of these things. I live in Texas and they are common here. Get ALL the info you can WHILE STAYING SAFE....scaredy cats like ME depend on people like YOU to keep us informed. We REALLY appreciate all you do. Cant say thank you ENOUGH. God bless and KEEP YOU SAFE!
Impressive footage for sure, this guy had nerves of steal, or he was just stupid! I know a lil' about tornadoes and towards the end there the wind picked up more which i believe was "inflow" a stream of air being sucked into the twister, which could have turned his vehicle over. He probably would have survived, but i think it would have ruinded his day though lol.
1:10 - At this time, please return all tray tables to their upright position and fasten your seatbelts. We will now be serving emergency doses of sanity and proceeding to pull a U-turn...?
I'm sorry but while watching the video. It was funny at 2:09 when you made the wedge comment. It kind of came out of left field..lol. But great vid!!!!!!!
I watched this about a year ago and just located it again today. This is one of the best tor. vids out there. One question, did the original tornado just grow larger or was there a 2nd area of rotation which developed along with the original.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Only a moron would just keep driving towards that tornado! Yeah were about to get hit by a fucking tornado because were to fucking stupid to know any better! Theres storm chasers and then theres stupid guess which one these idiots are!
I don't call these morons storm chasers just idiots that shouldn't even be let out on their own!
at least you did not get hurt because I saw you got too close and then you backed up which was the smart thing to do. Great job on filming this beastly tornado
Quinter is my hometown. No it doesn't get hit by a lot of tornadoes but that year was a bad year. I couldn't get ahold of my parents who were at work at the time all this was taking place.
I was replying to a comment asking if there were a lot of tornadoes in the Quinter area. I was referring to the fact that it was a single, well documented tornado.
Perfect video for showing how quick a tornado can wedge out. Shows exactly why people need to give the tornado a chance to grow before drawing in so close. You can have a tornado pass safely in front of you, but if it grows into a monster wedge, it can have you for lunch even though it's going away from you. This is where you will hear accounts of tornadoes that turned a 180 and came back and hit someone. Most cases the tornado didn't do a 180, It just grew so fast that it appears to do a 180.
This guy did the right thing though, he backed up and didn't get into a screaming panic like I see in some videos. He didn't get at a rediculous speed that could have put him in a ditch on this road. Nice job backing up calmly and staying focused on the escape from this beast of a tornado. I give this vid 5 stars.
@Torn80cj Thanks. That first one suckered me into following it and when the big hail started falling I stopped thinking I did not want to get into a baseball hail storm. Thats when I looked out the drivers side window and thought "I'm Dead" and just started to back up plant myself next to the small hill to deflect some of the winds. It worked and I did not break one window.
The only thing that did break was my radiator fan motor relay that got wet.
I was thinking when he was backing up the suv, what is he doing? Why is the camera pointing to the left and not following that tornado? Then suddenly after speeding up "we're about to be hit by a f**kin wedge" I laughed my head off! Omg how awesome!
Yeah, a mile wide tornado with debris hitting the truck that was just 100 yards in front of the truck. guess you did not see the powerlines slamming into the truck.
Man! you got the biggest balls to do this! you have to get your life insurance papers done just in case you depart for eternity..I thought that wedge would never end! I had to change my crapped underware and I'm only home watching it! Damn!
I would have been shitting myself when the pole with the wires came down with what looked like the wires resting on your roof, scarier than the tornado. I allways smack myself when realize after a chase I was filming under those while outside of the car
I think they both do... massive... but I have seen stories and heard accounts of the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen.... I couldn't do it... Storm chasing oh hell yeah! As long as I was with someone with more experience that I, and since I have zero it shouldn't be too hard. I've been in a tornado but not chased one...
I too have been close to a tornado and like an idiot, I had to see it even closer. It's very intimidating seeing something so violent and not knowing where it's heading and the "Freight-train" or "roller-coaster" sound it makes is accurate. Although I'm curious to test my own fears on the Bering sea, I've been in the N. Atlantic in about 30-45 footers which was heartpounding. But constant rougue waves is freakin scary.
Nice video, if a little bit reckless. IMHO a sign of true professionalism and skill is getting close enough for the money-shot, WITHOUT putting yourself in harm's way.... but whatever. It's a great video.
Great video. But between the power lines coming down on the car and almost getting hit by the tornado itself, this guy should have a "supidity clause" in his life insurance policy. Haha
Haha. I'm messing with you. I think thunderstorms and tornadoes are fascinating. Terrifying. But fascinating. Ever chase tornadoes at night? That would definitely be an adrenaline rush not knowing where the tornado was until lightning flashed.
Yeah chased lots of them at night. The danger is dealing with all the other people on the roads not having a clue what is happening when I have a radar feed to show me where the storm is located.
I am not that stupid to drive right next to the tornado. You have to use wise judgement when chasing or you will become a statistic, a dead one. Nice video though, thanks for sharing it...
One of these days, one of these guys are going to miscalculate and get too close. Then we'll see the funnel sweep over the car, hear the guy scream his head off, and the camera record the car being thrown 200 yards through the air.
When that happens, I bet that gets 5 stars on YouTube.
"We're about to get hit by a fuckin' wedge" should be on a t-shirt, way to calmly shit your pants and not orgasm everywhere like Reed Timmer.

crab fisherman , there's a death rate in that line of work.

WICKED!! I'd love to see that up close, and I wish I knew why the fear of death was so exciting?
fullthrottle200 2 years ago
WOW! That was close. Bet you had to change your underware after that! "we're about to get hit by a fuckin wedge" lol
Not laughing at you- laughing at what you said and how you said it kinda calmly for about to possibly get killed

Nice video, if a little bit reckless. IMHO a sign of true professionalism and skill is getting close enough for the money-shot, WITHOUT putting yourself in harm's way.... but whatever. It's a great video.

When I saw the crooked telephone pole I was like oh shit but than you start to see it at 3:58 and it just couldn't stay up any longer, it fell.
Kittylover9393 2 years ago
this is a good one, it shows you how you have to be professional any tornado including a wedge monster like this one

the only thing i wish this video had was about another 3 minutes driving back up where it crossed and assessing the damage first-hand. great footage!
jtm12180 3 years ago
I'll be posting that on my site later this month.

This huge tornado was rated EF2. The one that crossed I-70 about 2 hours later was an EF4.

Great video. But between the power lines coming down on the car and almost getting hit by the tornado itself, this guy should have a "supidity clause" in his life insurance policy. Haha
UtahMike41 3 years ago
Um, Yeah. I shot the video...
bnvn1 3 years ago
Haha. I'm messing with you. I think thunderstorms and tornadoes are fascinating. Terrifying. But fascinating. Ever chase tornadoes at night? That would definitely be an adrenaline rush not knowing where the tornado was until lightning flashed.
UtahMike41 3 years ago
Yeah chased lots of them at night. The danger is dealing with all the other people on the roads not having a clue what is happening when I have a radar feed to show me where the storm is located.
bnvn1 3 years ago
Yeah! A stupidity clause and a change of underwear!
winston5610 3 years ago
I am not that stupid to drive right next to the tornado. You have to use wise judgement when chasing or you will become a statistic, a dead one. Nice video though, thanks for sharing it...

One of these days, one of these guys are going to miscalculate and get too close. Then we'll see the funnel sweep over the car, hear the guy scream his head off, and the camera record the car being thrown 200 yards through the air.
When that happens, I bet that gets 5 stars on YouTube.
