But I remember seeing the storm surge the day before the storm and was in AWE. Me and my Dad were watching as well as my mom and we knew right away that the storm was BAD. We knew all those buildings would be demolished by the ocean. I still even now just can't believe the strength of that storm. Not the winds, but the storm surge. Just unreal and devastating for the people there. But they are getting on their feet again at least unlike others have.

I visited Galveston recently all the buildings in the background were completely destroyed and fell into the ocean. Galveston has bounced back now and getting better everyday.

We are truly a different breed, and this is the third time in my lifetime Galveston has had to pick up the pieces after a hurricane, but Ike was by far the worst except for the 1900 storm. But there is a huge difference between here and N.O. N.O. is much much larger in size and its problems way more complex. Please purchase Ike: A Documentary filmed by the Ball High School film class proceeds to Galveston ISD Education fund.

Galveston water is nasty and salty and has a lot of oil and trash in it. I use to swim there as a kid and I'd get little spots of oil that would last for days. But it's fun though.
We live right on Galveston Bay and my husband wanted to stay and at the last minute we left cause I told him that it's mandatory. Thank GOD we left because there was so much damage! :(

I visited Galveston recently all the buildings in the background were completely destroyed and fell into the ocean. Galveston has bounced back now and getting better everyday.

You can see the official trailer for Ike: A Documentary right here on youtube, they have their own channel. This film is awesome and it has been entered in two national major film festivals. Kudos to Robert Weiss and the Hurricane Story Tellers for making this film, most of the kids who made the film had lost everything in the storm. I would also like to thank composer John Tesh for replacing all of the band instruments at Weis Jr. High here that were lost in the storm.

As a native Galvestonian, thanks for the compliment. We are truly a different breed, and this is the third time in my lifetime Galveston has had to pick up the pieces after a hurricane, but Ike was by far the worst except for the 1900 storm. But there is a huge difference between here and N.O. N.O. is much much larger in size and its problems way more complex. Please purchase Ike: A Documentary filmed by the Ball High School film class proceeds to Galveston ISD Education fund.

Especially if you had TO SWIM EVERYWHERE even if you did have resources. Yeah.....the good people of galveston lost some things indeed....but stop patting yourselves on the back already. It was a CATEGORY 2 STORM.

The peninsula was completely wiped out though. GONE. Nothing but one or 2 houses were left. Everything else was simply gone.

Galveston water is nasty and salty and has a lot of oil and trash in it. I use to swim there as a kid and I'd get little spots of oil that would last for days. But it's fun though.

We live right on Galveston Bay and my husband wanted to stay and at the last minute we left cause I told him that it's mandatory. Thank GOD we left because there was so much damage! :(

I've been living in Galveston 40 years and until Ike, have never seen the seawall topped. The seawall is built 16 feet above mean sea tide, so, no joke, the surge really was that high...
