I love U2, but they are too gentle for such a powerful song. Fergie is embarrassing here. If you know the way Lisa Fischer does it, you'll know what I'm talking about - Fergie is too trashy for Gimme Shelter. This is just the wrong combination of people! Oh, and Mick Jagger is smashing.

dressagegirl04: I disagree. Fergie should slip away from the hip-hop & go rock instead. She has a kick-ass voice & she should use it. Three generations of talent on one stage... This is f**king great!
What exactly was Will.i.am doing? Just sitting behind the controls? What a publicity stunt. Otherwise, really good performance, even though I hate Fergie.
I think this is an epic performance by all involved. I never really thought that Fergie was all that talented before, I mean some of her songs were ok, but I didn't get the hype. Now I can see a glimmer of real talent and spark there. Good job Fergie!
@TheStilletto A-fucking-men. She should totally screw Black Eyes Peas and do her own thing, as long as it includes guitars and Fergie screaming in high pitched voice.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Fergie needs to give up this Hip-Hop/Pop crap and take up Rock...she has so much potential to be a Rock Goddess it would be a shame if it went to waste.
I herd Fergie sing barracuda live about twenty feet from where I was standing and all I can say is she fucking belted out that song while doing flips across the stage. Fergie blew me away that day and I have been a fan from that day on. Oh and I have seen Heart 4 times and this woman did it complete justice.
Yes it got a painful at the end, Fergie and Mick dont have the chemistry and it sort petered out. Also the jangly U2 guitar kept creeping in, you would think they could have enticed Mick Taylor to perform , that would have been a show! There again, get rid of U2 and bring on Charlie , Keith et al. Despite over doing the theatrics and trying to out do Mick , Fergie did steal the show. " Rape , Murder ..just a shot away" . 40 years on and the lyrics are still scarily prescient.
Oh god. That's just painful. As much as I like U2, they undo the heavy rhythm that makes the original song so powerful, and Fergie's epileptic fit on stage is just...urgh. Just sing, don't act out a pantomime. So many female singers today seem to compensate with volume and adding "OOOH OOOH AAH AAH" for no reason.
@TracyFClark next time do a little research before you insert foot in mouth you dumb fuck....I read the backstory in Rolling Stone magazine in which Jagger specifically asked the guys in U2 to play the song using a different arrangement / to make it sound different than just the traditional Stones song...he wanted the song to have a little bit of a Middle Eastern tinge to it...so if you want to blame someone for the way the song sounds why don't you blame Mick Jagger dummy.
@wolfennyc if you think this is good music you need to have your hearing checcked. I don't really need to do any "research" to hear that U2 obviously cannoy play the song. It has nothing to do with Mick Jagger...now please keep your profanity and insults to your self.
Fergie took that stage by storm!!! Like some rock and roll siren from the past. Damm!! She gets it, and she nails it BRAVO!!!! Not many women could shine so bright between two of musics greatest front men. Respect.
@23firestorm See, what I can't fathom is that when he was recording his last solo album, Slash had Izzy Stradlin and Fergie in the studio... and he didn't think to cover Gimme Shelter. IT WOULD'VE BEEN AWESOME.

This video is awesome and exciting, but the intro doesn't hold a candle to the RS studio version (actually, even the Stones don't do the intro justice when they place this in concert, who knows how they made that sound, but I always thought it was kind of the model that the Edge picked up on for hypnotic guitar riffs).

Also Fergie is good, but underused, I did really like her little oooh addition at the beginning, but so short. Anyway, Merry Clayton(studio) and Lisa Fischer (past 20 years concert version) kill this song better than Fergie did.
Still... very exciting to see probably the top 3 concert acts in the country share the stage. But the highlight has to be the moment Jagger walks on stage and belts out "oh a storm is threatening" pure adrenaline!
i know she had her problems in the past but you gotta hand it to fergie. she is not a media ho. she behaves. and she is damn hot. and she can sing! i give a whole months pay check to switch sides with josh.
the reason i like this so much is that it brings together the old(and great) generation with the new. personally i prefer the older stuff like the stones and the beatles and the doors

Brilliant performance all round. Why do people find it necessary to denigrate U2 and/or Fergie in order to show their appreciation for Jagger? That's just kinda childish.

Oh, stop with worship bullshit!
Seriously, does anyone gets the message from this song?
-The lyrics of the song speak of seeking shelter from a coming storm, painting a picture of devastation and social apocalypse while also talking of the power of love:
''Oh, a storm is threat'ning, My very life today; If I don't get some shelter, Oh yeah, I'm gonna fade away
War, children, it's just a shot away, It's just a shot away...Love, sister, it's just a kiss away, It's just a kiss away''
I admit to being lukewarm about U2 and pretty much in the dark about Fergie's career, but Bono's vocals on this suck whereas Fergie absolutely kills her part. Jagger - what can be said - greatest front man in history of rock & roll.
So, OK. I speak as a huge fan of this song, but also as someone who (1) doesn't really dig anything done by the Stones post—uh—"Some Girls," (2) doesn't like anything by U2 after "Zooropa," (3) knows almost nothing about Fergie:
Let me just say that THIS IS AWESOME Rock 'n' roll is about a yearning within all of us that is part religion, part sex, and part human solidarity. Fergie not only has a hell of a voice, but she totally understands rock 'n' roll! So do the old-timers here. BRAVO!

No one blew Mick away, it wouldn't have worked without him, wow, what a fucking talent, ol man wrote this really scary and very prophetic song in 68, it;s more relevant now...and he sings his ass off, get your grampa to do that shit...yay Mick and bravo to U2 and Fergie, great job...
Fergie loves molesting guitar players at all her live concerts lol. (ex. Slash, The Edge, etc.)
